Network structure and parasite transmission in a group living lizard, the gidgee skink, <Emphasis Type="Italic">Egernia stokesii</Emphasis> 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Gidgee skinks (Egernia stokesii) form large social aggregations in rocky outcrops across the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. Group members share refuges
(rock crevices), which may promote parasite transmission. We measured connectivity of individuals in networks constructed
from patterns of common crevice use and observed patterns of parasitism by three blood parasites (Hemolivia, Schellackia and Plasmodium) and an ectoparasitic tick (Amblyomma vikirri). Data came from a 1-year mark-recapture study of four populations. Transmission networks were constructed to represent possible
transmission pathways among lizards. Two lizards that used the same refuge within an estimated transmission period were considered
connected in the transmission network. An edge was placed between them, directed towards the individual that occupied the
crevice last. Social networks, a sub-set of same-day only associations, were small and highly fragmented compared with transmission
networks, suggesting that non-synchronous crevice use leads to more transmission opportunities than direct social association.
In transmission networks, lizards infested by ticks were connected to more other tick-infested lizards than uninfected lizards.
Lizards infected by ticks and carrying multiple blood parasite infections were in more connected positions in the network
than lizards without ticks or with one or no blood parasites. Our findings suggest higher levels of network connectivity may
increase the risk of becoming infected or that parasites influence lizard behaviour and consequently their position in the
network.

Despite the ubiquity of studies quantifying the strength and form of selection in nature, rarely is the ecological context for contemporary selection understood. Here we report a case where lake level is a selective factor acting on sockeye salmon body size-at-maturity because low lake levels cause large salmon to strand and die rather than reach the breeding grounds. As a result of a semelparous life history, death for salmon at this stage results in a lifetime fitness of zero. We combined information on the level of Lake Aleknagik (southwestern Alaska, USA) from 1952 through 2006 with a detailed comparison of the body size of mature salmon that died at the mouth of Hansen Creek vs. individuals that successfully ascended to the spawning grounds over 10 breeding seasons (1997-2006). The percentage of salmon stranding at the mouth varied among years: 2-42% in males and < 1-26% in females. Formal selection analyses indicated that the largest individuals were most susceptible to stranding mortality, especially in years when many salmon stranded, and these were years with low lake levels. Taken together, these results suggest that lake level was a strong and consistent selective force acting on this salmon population, acting synergistically with size-selective predation by bears. Salmon breeding in Hansen Creek tend to be smaller, younger, and more streamlined than conspecifics from neighboring populations, suggesting that selection against large individuals could be driving these patterns. 相似文献

Ecologists use stable isotopes (delta13C, delta15N) to better understand food webs and explore trophic interactions in ecosystems. Traditionally, delta13C vs. delta15N bi-plots have been used to describe food web structure for a single time period or ecosystem. Comparisons of food webs across time and space are increasing, but development of statistical approaches for testing hypotheses regarding food web change has lagged behind. Here we present statistical methodologies for quantitatively comparing stable isotope food web data. We demonstrate the utility of circular statistics and hypothesis tests for quantifying directional food web differences using two case studies: an arthropod salt marsh community across a habitat gradient and a freshwater fish community from Lake Tahoe, USA, over a 120-year time period. We calculated magnitude and mean angle of change (theta) for each species in food web space using mean delta13C and delta15N of each species as the x, y coordinates. In the coastal salt marsh, arthropod consumers exhibited a significant shift toward dependence on Spartina, progressing from a habitat invaded by Phragmites to a restored Spartina habitat. In Lake Tahoe, we found that all species from the freshwater fish community shifted in the same direction in food web space toward more pelagic-based production with the introduction of nonnative Mysis relicta and onset of cultural eutrophication. Using circular statistics to quantitatively analyze stable isotope food web data, we were able to gain significant insight into patterns and changes in food web structure that were not evident from qualitative comparisons. As more ecologists incorporate a food web perspective into ecosystem analysis, these statistical tools can provide a basis for quantifying directional food web differences from standard isotope data. 相似文献

This article describes the history of the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (CVMSHCP), in the Riverside
County region of Southern California. When this collaborative biodiversity conservation planning process began, in 1994, local
participants and supporters had numerous factors working in their favor. Yet, as of April 2007, nearly 13 years had passed
without an approved plan. This is a common problem. Many multiple species habitat conservation plans now take more than a
decade to complete, and the long duration of these processes often results in negative consequences. The CVMSHCP process became
bogged down—despite strong scientific input and many political advantages—due to problematic relationships between the Plan’s
local supporters, its municipal signatory parties, and officials from the state and federal wildlife agencies, particularly
the regional office of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This case study demonstrates the crucial importance of institutional
structures and relationships, process management, and timeliness in habitat conservation planning. We conclude by offering
several related recommendations for future HCP processes. 相似文献

Social science is becoming increasingly important in conservation, with more studies involving methodologies that collect data from and about people. Conservation science is a normative and applied discipline designed to support and inform management and practice. Poor research practice risks harming participants and, researchers, and can leave negative legacies. Often, those at the forefront of field-based research are early-career researchers, many of whom enter their first research experience ill-prepared for the ethical conundrums they may face. We draw on our own experiences as early-career researchers to illuminate how ethical challenges arise during conservation research that involves human participants. Specifically, we considered ethical review procedures, conflicts of values, and power relations, and devised broad recommendations on how to navigate ethical challenges when they arise during research. In particular, we recommend researchers apply reflexivity (i.e., thinking that allows researchers to recognize the effect researchers have on the research) to help navigate ethical challenges and encourage greater engagement with ethical review processes and the development of ethical guidelines for conservation research that involves human participants. Such guidelines must be accompanied by the integration of rigorous ethical training into conservation education. We believe our experiences are not uncommon and can be avoided and hope to spark discussion to contribute to a more socially just conservation. 相似文献

To examine the relationship between the nitro group orientation and photochemical degradation, a series of NPAHs, including 6-nitrochrysene, 9-nitroanthracene and 6-nitrobenzo(a)pyrene were irradiated both dissolved in CH3CN and adsorbed onto a surface (alumina, silica, carbon and cellulose). In solution, not all NPAHs displayed a relationship between their relative and nitro group orientation. In the adsorbed state, the nature of the particle appeared to have more of an influence than did the structure of the NPAH. If the compound degraded, the main product was generally a quinone. 相似文献

Goal and Background
Since consequences of global climate change include even contradicting directions and trends in different regions and seasons, regional studies are a necessity to understand regional problems and risks. Extreme precipitation is a highly variable climate element in time and space with serious economic and ecological impacts. The analysis of changes in the Saxonian precipitation characteristics is one constituent in our understanding of global climate change and regional climate-related risk assessment. Methods
Changes of regional precipitation patterns and their extremes were analysed based upon data from 21 stations in Saxony from 1934 to 2000. Eighteen stations delivered 50-year data sets (1951–2000) and three stations (Altmörbitz, Chemnitz, Neuhausen) delivered daily precipitation data over 67 years (1934–2000). Differentiated by season and half-year periods, trends were calculated for the relevant parameters by linear regression. The trend significance was determined by the non-parametric Mann-Kendall-trend test. Results and Conclusion
In the summer half of the year, distinctively more dry conditions developed. Over the same period, the winter half of the year became more wet. Regarding trends of extreme precipitation, a strong dependency to the size of the choosen treshold value exists. During the summer, size and excess frequency of the 90th and 95th percentiles have increased, whereas they decreased in the winter. On the other hand, the half year trends of the 99th percentile are predominantly positive. Particularly the trend towards more dry conditions in summer is of substantial relevance for the economy and water management.Recommendations and Perspective
The additional analysis of further precipitation data sets, provided by the Saxonion Climate database, will advance the regional accuracy of the presented findings. In addition work on the adjustment of an extreme distribution to daily and monthly precipitation sums is needed, and an effect-related definition of dry periods needs to be developed. 相似文献49.

Testosterone upregulates lipoprotein status to control sexual attractiveness in a colorful songbird 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

A salient feature of many secondary sexual characteristics in animals is that their expression is controlled by sex-steroid hormones. However, for only a few types of ornaments do we know the precise molecular mechanism by which androgens like testosterone (T) enhance trait production. We studied the red carotenoid-based beak of male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), which serves as a sexually selected trait and is thought to be T dependent. In previous research, we demonstrated that the extent to which male finches produce lipoproteins in the bloodstream, which bind carotenoid pigments acquired from the diet and transport them to peripheral tissues, regulates the accumulation of carotenoids in the body and beak pigmentation. Here we show that T acts to upregulate lipoprotein production and allows male zebra finches to display flashy, sexually attractive coloration. Levels of circulating T in blood positively and significantly predicted lipoprotein profile (as measured by cholesterol levels), blood carotenoid concentration, and beak color. Exogenous T administration elevated cholesterol and carotenoid status as well as beak redness. Last, experimental inhibition of T (using the anti-androgen flutamide) downregulated lipoprotein production and carotenoid circulation and faded the beak. This androgen- and lipoprotein-mediated system represents one of the more detailed physiological mechanisms underlying the development of a sex-steroid-dependent trait in animals. 相似文献
