The fast-flowing and highly turbid Lagaip River (0.5–10 g/L suspended solids) in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea receives mine-derived metal inputs in both dissolved and particulate forms. Nearest the mine, metal concentrations in suspended solids were 360, 9, 90, 740 and 1,300 mg/kg for As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, while dissolved concentrations were 2.7, 0.6, 3.1, 0.1 and 25 μg/L, respectively. This creates a significant metal exposure source for organisms nearer the mine. However, because the Lagaip River is diluted by a large number of tributaries, the extent to which mine-derived metals may affect biota in the lower catchments is uncertain. To improve our understanding of the forms of potentially bioavailable metals entering the lower river system, we studied the partitioning and speciation of metals within the Lagaip River system. Dissolved and particulate metal concentrations decreased rapidly downstream of the mine due to dilution from tributaries. As a portion of the particulate metal concentrations, the more labile dilute acid-extractable forms typically comprised 10–30 % for As and Pb, 50–75 % for Cu and Zn, and 50–100 % for Cd. Only dissolved Cd, Cu and Zn remained elevated relative to the non-mine-impacted tributaries (<0.03, 0.5 and 0.3 μg/L), but the concentrations did not appreciably change with increasing dilution downriver. This indicated that release of Cd, Cu and Zn was likely occurring from the more labile metal phases of the mine-derived particulates. Chelex-labile metal analyses and speciation modelling indicated that dissolved copper and lead were largely non-labile and likely complexed by naturally occurring organic ligands, while dissolved cadmium and zinc were predominantly present in labile forms. The study confirmed that mine-derived particulates may represent a significant source of dissolved metals in the lower river system; however, comparison with water quality guidelines indicates the low concentrations would not adversely affect aquatic life.  相似文献

Projected warming in Sweden and other Fennoscandian countries will probably increase growth rates of forest trees near their northern limits, increase the probability of new pest outbreaks, and foster northerly migration of both native and exotic species. The greatest challenges for sustainable forestry are to restore and enhance the ecological and socioeconomic diversity of intensively managed forested landscapes. With appropriate management, climate warming may facilitate the regeneration of this diversity. Experimental transplant gardens along latitudinal or altitudinal gradients and high-resolution maps of expected future climate could provide a scientific basis for predicting the climate response of potential migrant species. Management of corridors and assisted migration could speed the movement of appropriate species.  相似文献

PUF disk passive air samplers are increasingly employed for monitoring of POPs in ambient air. In order to utilize them as quantitative sampling devices, a calibration experiment was conducted. Time integrated indoor air concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were obtained from a low volume air sampler operated over a 50 d period alongside the PUF disk samplers in the same office microenvironment. Passive sampling rates for the fully-sheltered sampler design employed in our research were determined for the 51 PCB and 7 PBDE congeners detected in all calibration samples. These values varied from 0.57 to 1.55 m3 d(-1) for individual PCBs and from 1.1 to 1.9 m3 d(-1) for PBDEs. These values are appreciably lower than those reported elsewhere for different PUF disk sampler designs (e.g. partially sheltered) employed under different conditions (e.g. in outdoor air), and derived using different calibration experiment configurations. This suggests that sampling rates derived for a specific sampler configuration deployed under specific environmental conditions, should not be extrapolated to different sampler configurations. Furthermore, our observation of variable congener-specific sampling rates (consistent with other studies), implies that more research is required in order to understand fully the factors that influence sampling rates. Analysis of wipe samples taken from the inside of the sampler housing, revealed evidence that the housing surface scavenges particle bound PBDEs.  相似文献

Spiking of sediment with metal cations that readily hydrolyse causes the sediment pH to decrease. Displaced iron and manganese also oxidise and hydrolyse, further lowering sediment pH. The lower pH of metal-spiked sediments requires a subsequent sediment neutralisation. This research compared the pH adjustment of Cu- and Zn-spiked sediments using single and multiple additions of 1M NaOH. Sediment pH, redox potential, and porewater metal concentrations were monitored over 40 days. Depth profiles were also measured to investigate stratification. A single pH adjustment to pH 7 and 8 initially counteracted the pH change caused by metal additions, however, pH continued to decrease slowly thereafter. Multiple pH adjustments diminished porewater Cu, Zn and Fe concentrations to a greater extent than a single pH adjustment, but the ongoing oxidative precipitation of porewater metals continued to consume OH(-) ions and impede pH maintenance. Displacement of high iron(II) concentrations and the opposing rates of iron(II) oxidative precipitation and bacterially-mediated iron(II) production, affected the partitioning of the added metals between the sediment and pore water. Despite similar pH over the spiked-metal concentration gradient following pH adjustment, sediments spiked with higher metal concentrations produced lower porewater Fe concentrations, possibly due to toxicity to iron(III) oxyhydroxide reducing bacteria. Distinct stratification of redox potential and dissolved Fe and Cu developed over a depth of 6cm during the 40-day equilibration period. Recommendations are provided on methods for preparing metal-spiked sediments in which the partitioning of metals between dissolved and particulate phases better resembles that of in situ (field) metal-contaminated sediments.  相似文献

A numerical model for simulation of the electrohydrodynamic flow in an electrically enhanced cyclone is presented. A finite element approach was applied to solve the coupled equations for the positive corona-induced electric field. Three-dimensional simulations of gas flow were carried using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations including the Reynolds stress model and the electrohydrodynamic effect. Numerical results show that the change in the flow profile because of the influence of the corona-induced electric field is apparent when the inlet flow rate is low but is negligible at higher flow rates.  相似文献

Developing a globally responsive Science‐Practitioner‐Humanist model (Lefkowitz, 2008 ) means articulating professional values (supply) and meeting global demand. The United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) seek to halve human poverty by 2015 and how organizations respond to this constitutes a formidable demand on Organizational Psychology. A key process for delivering more effective aid is the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, which seeks collaborative contributions from a plethora of Organizations, including business organizations and professions like ours. We argue that a thoughtful articulation of what Organizational Psychology uniquely stands for, and can offer, is therefore needed. It is proposed that a key mechanism for addressing this challenge is a Task Force, whose functions will include the coordination of institutions within psychology, and linking them to those in development. We describe such a task force and outline its core mission (Reichman, Frese, Schein, Carr, MacLachlan, & Landy, 2008 ). Organizational Psychology's response to poverty reduction should meet Lefkowitz's criteria for developing a more humanist model of science and practice as the MDGs are inherently humanist and values‐based. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has been endorsed by the IPCC and the UK government as a key mitigation option but remains on the cusp of wide-scale commercial deployment. Here we present a technology roadmap for CCS, depicted in terms of external factors and short- and long-term pathways for its development, moving from a demonstration to commercialisation era. The roadmap was been developed through a two-phase process of stakeholder engagement; the second phase of this, a high level stakeholder workshop, is documented here. This approach has provided a unique overview of the current status, potential and barriers to CCS deployment in the UK. In addition to the roadmap graphics and more detailed review, five consensus conclusions emerging from the workshop are presented. These describe the need for a monetary CO2 value and the financing of carbon capture and storage schemes; the lack of technical barriers to the deployment of demonstration scale CCS plant; the role of demonstration projects in developing a robust regulatory framework; key storage issues; the need for a long-term vision in furthering both the technical and non-technical development of CCS.  相似文献
