Visibility impairment from regional haze is a significant problem throughout the continental United States. A substantial portion of regional haze is produced by smoke from prescribed and wildland fires. Here we describe the integration of four simulation models, an array of GIS raster layers, and a set of algorithms for fire-danger calculations into a modeling framework for simulating regional-scale smoke dispersion. We focus on a representative fire season (2003) in the northwestern USA, on a 12 km domain, and track the simulated dispersion and concentration of PM2.5 over the course of the season. Simulated visibility reductions over national parks and wilderness areas are within the ranges of measured values at selected monitoring sites, although the magnitudes of peak events are underestimated because these include inputs other than fire. By linking the spatial and temporal patterns of haze-producing emissions to climatic variability, particularly synoptic weather patterns, and the stochastic nature of fire occurrence across the region, we can provide a robust method for estimating the quantity and distribution of fire-caused regional haze under climate-warming scenarios. 相似文献
The toxicity test of fenvalerate were conducted to fresh water fishes Labeo rohita (Hamilton), Catla catla (Hamilton), Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton), Aplocheilus punchex (Hamilton) and Ctenopharygodon idellus (Valenciennes). The static and continuous flow through tests were employed to determine the lethal concentration (LC50) for 24h, 48h and 96h to the test fish. It was observed that Cirrhinus mrigala is more sensitive to this pesticide followed by Applochielus punchex, Lebeo rohita, Catla catla and Ctenopharyngodon idellus. The residue analysis for qualitative confirmation was done by thin layer chromatography (TLC) to assess the deposition of pesticide in different tissues of fishes. The quantitative study of accumulation in the whole body tissue was done by Gas liquid chromatography (GLC). The quantitative residues confirm the toxic action. 相似文献
The acute toxicity of unionized ammonia; nitrite and nitrate to the Indian major carp Catla catla (Hamilton) was determined using static and continuous flow through systems for 24 hours. The median lethal concentration (LC50) values for 24 h of ammonia (NH3-N), nitrite (NO2-N) and nitrate (NO3-N) were 0.045 mg/l, 120.84 mg/l and 1565.43 mg/l in static test respectively and were 0.036 mg/l, 117.43 mg/l and 1484.08 mg/l in continuous flow through test respectively. 相似文献
This study investigated variation in parental behavior in oldfield mice (Peromyscus polionotus). Specifically, I examined the possibility that parental behavior and probability of litter loss may differ depending on
whether parents are related to one another and, therefore, whether offspring are inbred. When parents are related, they share
more genes with their offspring and so may be predicted to invest more in inbred offspring if these offspring do not inherently
have a greater risk of juvenile mortality. Survival of inbred pups did not differ from survival of outbred pups, and females
tended to exhibit a preference, in the form of enhanced parental care, for inbred litters. Males did not display any consistent
preferences. Inbred litters were left unattended more often during the immediate post-partum period than were outbred litters,
but this inconsistent finding appeared to have a smaller effect than the overall improved maternal care provided to inbred
litters. Females thus appeared to modulate their behavior to a greater degree than did males depending on characteristics
of the litter. Patterns of litter loss indicated that complete death of litters was independent of litter inbreeding, whereas
loss of selected pups in a litter occurred significantly more often when litters were inbred. Complete and partial loss of
litters may be functionally different behaviors that are triggered by different cues.

Field studies of the desert spider Agelenopsis aperta revealed a primarily monogamous mating system. However polygyny, polyandry and polygynandry were superimposed upon the primary system, with 9% of the marked males and 11% of the marked females in a field population mating more than once. In the laboratory males commonly mated multiply with fertile offspring resulting, while females were less likely than males to mate multiply. Monogamy under field conditions was enforced by two factors: (1) high travel costs to males, and (2) a significant decline in female receptivity after the first mating. Heavy males were more likely to be accepted by females both in the field, and in female choice experiments conducted in the laboratory. Finally, male weight determined the outcome of male-male agonistic interactions over females. One possible explanation for female choice in this system which lacks male parental investment is that females may be using male size as an indicator of future success of their offspring. 相似文献
We examined the genetic relationship among putative parents, offspring, and helpers in 224 red-cockaded woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) from the Sandhills of North Carolina. Comparison of DNA similarity with a pedigree constructed from 3,823 individually-marked birds observed from 1979 to 1992 provided verification of observed relatedness in the sampled population (R2 = 0.87,df = 14,P<0.001). In this population, breeding pairs may or may not have helpers, most of which are males that remain on their natal territory. Our sample included helpers assisting their parents, helpers assisting a related male and an unrelated female, and helpers assisting an unrelated pair. Band by band comparison and examination of similarity among DNA profiles indicated that all offspring from non-helped nests were sired by their putative parents (n = 28 families). Similarly, all but one offspring in helped nests were also sired by their putative parents (n = 16 families). In the exceptional case, the offspring evidently was sired by a male external to the group. Analysis of similarity values supported the conclusion that matings by helpers or extra-group males are rare or non-existent. Our results indicate that in this species advantages gained by individuals remaining on their natal territories as helpers do not generally include siring offspring.

Biodegradation of poly(lactic) acid (PLA) has been studied extensively, but there is only limited knowledge about the effect of irradiation sterilization on its biodegradability. The aim of this work was to examine the aerobic biodegradation of gamma and electron beam irradiated PLA films along with the effects of aging (3, 6, and 9 months of storage) using a direct measurement respirometric system. Commercial PLA film was exposed to a simulated aerobic compost environment, and its mineralization was 96 % at day 85. Gamma and electron beam irradiation affected the biodegradation of the post-irradiated PLA film. Aging irradiated PLA had some potential to increase the biodegradation rate, as the average value of mineralization after 9 months of storage was higher than for the non-irradiated PLA. Comparison of the effect of storage time on the biodegradability of PLA showed a significant increase in biodegradation of the gamma irradiated PLA after 3 months (70 %) and 9 months of storage (130 %). Similarly, there was a significant difference in the biodegradation of electron beam irradiated PLA between 3 months (68 %) and 9 months of storage (120 %). Due to the priming effect, the percent mineralization of gamma irradiated and E-beam irradiated PLA after 9 months of storage was greater than 100 %. Both non-irradiated and irradiated PLA films can be considered biodegradable plastics since they showed mineralization percentage larger than 90 % of that of the positive control at the end of the test period. 相似文献
Objective: Slow eyelid closure is recognized as an indicator of sleepiness in sleep-deprived individuals, although automated ocular devices are not well validated. This study aimed to determine whether changes in eyelid closure are evident following acute sleep deprivation as assessed by an automated device and how ocular parameters relate to performance after sleep deprivation.
Methods: Twelve healthy professional drivers (45.58 ± 10.93 years) completed 2 randomized sessions: After a normal night of sleep and after 24 h of total sleep deprivation. Slow eye closure (PERCLOS) was measured while drivers performed a simulated driving task.
Results: Following sleep deprivation, drivers displayed significantly more eyelid closure (P < .05), greater variation in lane position (P < .01) and more attentional lapses (P < .05) compared to after normal sleep. PERCLOS was moderately associated with variability in both vigilance performance (r = 0.68, P < .05) and variation in lane position on the driving task (r = 0.61, P < .05).
Conclusions: Automated ocular measurement appears to be an effective means of detecting impairment due to sleep loss in the laboratory. 相似文献
