The impact of the freshwater bivalve Corbicula leana on plankton community dynamics was examined during a cyanobacterial bloom period. Nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations, primary productivity, and phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in the experimental enclosures were measured at 2-3 day intervals. The introduction of mussels reduced net primary productivity and phytoplankton and chlorophyll. Chlorophyll decreased immediately following addition of 100 mussels and then increased over time. After 600 mussels were added, chlorophyll decreased continuously from 87to 25 microg l(-1), approaching that in the mussel-free enclosure. Simultaneously, water transparency increased and concentrations of suspended solids and total phosphorus decreased. Mussel addition caused short-term increases in nutrient concentrations, especially following high-density treatment: phytoplankton density decreased, while cell density in the mussel-free enclosure increased. Zooplankton densities in the two enclosures were similar; however, carbon biomass in the mussel enclosure increased, associated with an increase in large zooplankton. The trophic relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton was positive in the mussel-free enclosure and negative in the mussel-treatment enclosure, possibly reflecting effects of mussels on both consumer and resource control in the plankton community. Thus, filter feeding by Corbicula affects nutrient recycling and plankton community structure in a freshwater ecosystem through direct feeding and competition for food resources.  相似文献

This study was focused on determining Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd) and Zinc (Zn) in 33 indigenous plants and 12 soil in-situ plant samples in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam. The results showed that the soils of surveyed mining areas contained 181.2- 6754.3 mg kg(-1) As, 235.5-4337.2 mg kg(-1) Pb, 0.8- 419 mg kg(-1) Cd and 361.8-17565.1 mg kg(-1) Zn depending on the characteristics of each mining site. These values are much higher than those typical for normal soil. The heavy metal uptake into shoots and roots of 33 indigenous plant species was also determined. Two species of the plants investigated, Pteris vittata L. and Pityrogramma calomelanos L. were As hyperaccumulators, containing more than 0.1% heavy metals in their shoots. Eleusine indica L., Cynodon dactylon L., Cyperus rotundus L. and Equisetum ramosissimum (Vauch) accumulate very high Pb (0.15-0.65%) and Zn (0.22-1.56%) concentration in their roots. Additional experiments to clarify the potential of six these plants as good candidates for phytoremediation of heavy metal pollution soil are being carried out in our laboratory.  相似文献

In the Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound, British Columbia, colonies of individual cloud sponges, growing on rock (known as sponge gardens) receive resource subsidies from the high biodiversity of epifauna on adjacent rock habitats. Bioherms are reefs of glass sponges living on layers of dead sponges. In the same area as the sponge gardens, newly discovered bioherms in Howe Sound, BC (49.34.67 N, 123.16.26 W) at depths of 28- to 35-m are constructed exclusively by Aphrocallistes vastus, the cloud sponge. The sponge gardens had much higher taxon richness than the bioherms. The sponge garden had 106 species from 10 phyla, whereas the bioherm had only 15 species from 5 phyla. For recruiting juvenile rockfish (quillback, Sebastes maliger), the food subsidy of sponge gardens appears to be missing on bioherms of cloud sponge, where biodiversity is relatively low. While adult and subadult rockfishes (S. maliger, S. ruberrimus, S. proriger, and S. elongatus) were present on bioherms, no evidence for nursery recruitment of inshore rockfishes to bioherms was observed, whereas the sponge gardens supported high densities of newly recruited S. maliger, perhaps owing to the combination of both refuge and feeding opportunities. These results indicate that sponge gardens form a habitat for early stages of inshore S. maliger, whereas A. vastus bioherms are associated only with older juvenile and adult rockfishes.  相似文献

Conversions of natural woodlands to agriculture can alter the hydrologic balance, aquifer recharge, and salinity of soils and groundwater in ways that influence productivity and sustainable land use. Using a land-use change chronosequence in semiarid woodlands of Argentina's Espinal province, we examined the distribution of moisture and solutes and estimated recharge rates on adjacent plots of native woodlands and rain-fed agriculture converted 6-90 years previously. Soil coring and geoelectrical profiling confirmed the presence of spatially extensive salt accumulations in dry woodlands and pervasive salt losses in areas converted to agriculture. A 1.1-km-long electrical resistivity transect traversing woodland, 70-year-old agriculture, and woodland, for instance, revealed a low-resistivity (high-salinity) horizon between approximately 3 m and 13 m depth in the woodlands that was virtually absent in the agricultural site because of leaching. Nine-meter-deep soil profiles indicated a 53% increase in soil water storage after 30 or more years of cultivation. Conservative groundwater-recharge estimates based on chloride tracer methods in agricultural plots ranged from approximately 12 to 45 mm/yr, a substantial increase from the <1 mm/yr recharge in dry woodlands. The onset of deep soil moisture drainage and increased recharge led to >95% loss of sulfate and chloride ions from the shallow vadose zone in most agriculture plots. These losses correspond to over 100 Mg of sulfate and chloride salts potentially released to the region's groundwater aquifers through time with each hectare of deforestation, including a capacity to increase groundwater salinity to >4000 mg/L from these ions alone. Similarities between our findings and those of the dryland salinity problems of deforested woodlands in Australia suggest an important warning about the potential ecohydrological risks brought by the current wave of deforestation in the Espinal and other regions of South America and the world.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the possible role of soil aggregates in the sequestration of phenanthrene and thus in the declined biodegradation of the hydrocarbon. Phenanthrene aged in Lima loam (2-mm aggregates) showed declined biodegradation with time of aging to the test bacterium P5-2 capable of using sorbed phenanthrene. In contrast, the compound aged in a soil reconstructed with 68% clay-silt and 32% sand that had been separated from the Lima loam was readily mineralized. The percentages of each fraction used were the same as those of the original soil. Biodegradation of aged phenanthrene was not affected significantly by varying the ratios of each fraction in reconstructed mixtures. In experiments with Lima loam, its clay-silt fraction, and its sand fraction, mineralization extent was much lower in soil aggregates compared with the other samples while all had similar organic carbon content of ca. 1.51%. This suggests that aggregation may be another important determinant in the reduced biodegradation of aged phenanthrene.  相似文献

Natural manganese ore (NMO) catalysts were characterized and tested in the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen oxides under dilute conditions. Also, the oxidation of ammonia (NH(3)) was carried out using pure MnO(2), Mn(2)O(3) for comparing with the activity. It is found that the activity of NMO was similar to that of MnO(2) at low temperature below 150 degrees C but above this temperature, the activity of these catalysts showed the difference. In the course of NH(3) oxidation, N(2), NO, N(2)O and H(2)O were produced. But the quantity of NO(2) produced in this experiment was negligible. At temperature below 250 degrees C, selectivity into N(2) from NH(3) oxidation was in the order, NMO > MnO(2) > Mn(2)O(3). This is the reverse of activity of these manganese oxides. Also the characterization of NH(3) oxidation was proposed and supported by the effect of space velocity, inlet O(2) and NH(3) concentration. The increase of space velocity remarkably influenced not only the conversion but also selectivity into N(2). The higher the reaction temperature was, the higher the effect of inlet O(2) and NH(3) concentration on the reaction rate was. By introducing NO during NH(3) oxidation reaction, the possibility of NMO as selective catalytic reduction catalyst at low temperature was studied and showed positive results.  相似文献

The concentrations of three different fractions of particulate matter (PM) including PM2.5, PM10, and TSP were determined concurrently during March-May 2001. Measurements of three PM fractions were made at hourly intervals from four different observatory sites located within the city boundary of Seoul. On the basis of this study, we attempted to describe relationships between the occurrences of the Asian Dust (AD) event and its influences on the PM distribution characteristics. The results of our study demonstrated distinct differences between concentrations of PM fractions at AD and non-AD (NAD) periods. The increase of PM observed during the AD episode appeared to be dominated by the coarse, rather than fine, fraction of PM. In addition, it was found that TSP/PM10 ratios were almost constant, while the coarse/fine or TSP/PM2.5 ratios changed noticeably between AD and NAD periods. In most cases, differences in environmental conditions between AD and NAD periods were prominent and proven to be statistically significant. Moreover, the regression relationships between PM and N-oxides indicate that the source processes governing PM levels between the AD and NAD period can be different. The overall results of our analysis were hence helpful enough to distinguish competing processes in AD and NAD periods, while suggesting indirectly the possible control of different source processes on PM fractionation.  相似文献

The influence of various reaction parameters on herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) removal were examined in the photo/ferrioxalate/H(2)O(2) system, with regard to: (1) sulfate, phosphate, and z.rad;OH scavenger, as solution constituent; and (2) light intensity, ferrioxalate, H(2)O(2), and oxalate concentration, as operating parameter. In terms of 2,4-D removal, the photo/ferrioxalate/H(2)O(2) system has always been superior to the photo/Ferric ion/H(2)O(2) system, despite the high presence of anions (sulfate 100 mM, phosphate 1 mM) or z.rad;OH scavenger. Not only the rate of 2,4-D removal, but also the decomposition rate of H(2)O(2) and oxalate proportionally increase with light intensity. The ferrioxalate concentration determines the light absorption fraction, and thus, controls the rates of 2,4-D removal, and the decomposition of H(2)O(2) and oxalate, are predicted from kinetic formulations. The optimal concentration of H(2)O(2) and oxalate, according to the extent of the z.rad;OH scavenging reaction with these reagents, has been demonstrated for 2,4-D removal. It was found that an increasing oxalate concentration, which bears the burden of increased dissolved organic carbon (DOC), does not occur. This is because its decomposition, as a result of the photochemical reduction of the ferric oxalate complex, results in a decrease of the equivalent DOC. The importance of the key reaction factors to be considered, when applying this system to real wastewater treatment, is also discussed.  相似文献

In this study, cadmium (II), lead (II), copper (II) and zinc (II) were determined in Polygonum thunbergii and soil from the Mankyung River watershed, Korea. Soil samples contained detectable lead (<17.5 g g(-1)), copper (<8.4 g g(-1)) and zinc (<24.5 g g(-1)), whereas cadmium was undetectable. Whole plants of P. thunbergii contained detectable lead (<320.8 g g(-1)), copper (<863.2 g g(-1)) and zinc (<2427.3 g g(-1)), whereas cadmium was detectable only in the stem (<7.4 g g(-1)) and root (<10.1 g g(-1)). Whole plant concentrations were very different for each metal, particularly in the case of zinc. The saline water intruded zone in paddy fields near the seashore can be diagnosed accurately by joint exploration with geophysical and geochemical methods. Using the electromagnetic (EM) sounding technique, the weakly consolidated zone which introduces saline water into such an area of near seashore paddy fields in Korea was detected from the variation of electrical conductivity distribution following field irrigation. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) with Schlumberger array and chemical analysis of top soils, and groundwater in the study area verified the intruded zone near the surface. The VES results showed that the intrusion of seawater occurred in the form of a channel down to 30 m below sea level. Geochemical analysis of the top soil samples for the six major elements found in seawater indicated that the region showing high concentrations is concordant with the weakly consolidated zone near the surface. The degree of contamination in the study area was investigated by comparing the soil data with those from a nearby old reclamation field. If remediation work is not done for this intrusion zone, the sodicity degree in the paddy soil is expected to increase compared with the reference site data.  相似文献
