Electron microscopic examination of thin-sectioned Limnoria tripunctata from creosoted and untreated wood substrates from Panama, Florida, and laboratory aquaria, coupled with limnorian behavioral studies revealed that bacteria may contribute to the wood boring, nutrition, and creosote-resistance of these isopods. Ingested along with wood fragments and encased in a peritrophic membrane in the isopod intestine, these bacteria, upon lysis, may provide supplemental nutrition to the nitrogen-poor wood diet of L. tripunctata. Ingested material has never been observed in the digestive diverticula of limnorians and the presence of the peritrophic membrane in the isopod intestine has been correlated with feeding. Isopods from creosoted wood differed from those inhabiting untreated wood in that the former contained relatively larger and more diverse bacterial populations both on their exoskeletons and in their gut contents. These isopods harbored bacteria, which apparently bypassed the peritrophic membrane and lived in association with the isopod intestinal lining. These gut-associated bacteria were lost when laboratory isopods reared on creosoted wood were transferred to untreated wood. Laboratory isopods reared solely on creosoted or untreated wood were exposed to creosoted and untreated wood substrates, both sterilized and unsterilized. Boring and mortality data from these studies indicated that the creosote-reared population had a microbial flora whose activity facilitated isopod colonization of creosoted substrates. We present the hypothesis that creosote hydrocarbons provide nutrition for isopod-associated bacterial populations and that L. tripunctata may benefit from a concomitant bacterial detoxification of the creosote.  相似文献

Acartia tonsa Dana longevity and egg production data were studied over a 4-year period under standardized culture conditions. Egg-laying patterns and daily rates were evaluated as bioassay tools for measuring the nutritional value of various copepod foods, as well as assessing other aspects of environmental quality. Altogether, 337 females were observed in various aspects of this work. Experiments were performed with newly matured females in loosely covered crystallizing dishes. Fresh water and a standard concentration of algae were supplied daily, and a running daily tally was kept of the eggs produced. The effects of male copepods on egg production were analyzed. Males were either removed after the first eggs were observed or they remained with the female throughout her life span. Daily egg-laying rates of this latter group of females appeared to be more stable, but abnormal embryo development occurred if the males were not removed after fertilization. Likewise, the results of females which were not mated were studied. Life spans were shorter and egg production rates were lower than those of contemporary mated females. Unmated females were subjectively observed to be less active than their mated counterparts. The effects of continuous and temporary starvation on egg-laying were also observed. Under both normal and starved conditions, males appeared to have shorter life spans than either mated or unmated females. During starvation there were no real differences between the life spans or egg productions of mated or unmated females. Non-nutritional particulate matter was evaluated as a food source. It was ingested by the females, but did nothing to prolong the egg-laying period. Finally, the three algal components of the standard ration were evaluated. Females produced equally well with a mixed diet or with Thalassiosira pseudonana (100 m3) or Chroomonas salina (140 m3), the two larger species of this diet, but when Isochrysis galbana (40 m3) was fed, females reacted as if in a starved situation.  相似文献

Environmental education strategies have customarily placed substantial focus on enhancing ecological knowledge and literacy with the hope that, upon discovering relevant facts and concepts, participants will be better equipped to process and dissect environmental issues and, therefore, make more informed decisions. The assumption is that informed citizens will become active citizens––enthusiastically lobbying for, and participating in, conservation‐oriented action. We surveyed and interviewed and used performance data from 432 participants in the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST), a scientifically rigorous citizen science program, to explore measurable change in and links between understanding and action. We found that participation in rigorous citizen science was associated with significant increases in participant knowledge and skills; a greater connection to place and, secondarily, to community; and an increasing awareness of the relative impact of anthropogenic activities on local ecosystems specifically through increasing scientific understanding of the ecosystem and factors affecting it. Our results suggest that a place‐based, data‐rich experience linked explicitly to local, regional, and global issues can lead to measurable change in individual and collective action, expressed in our case study principally through participation in citizen science and community action and communication of program results to personal acquaintances and elected officials. We propose the following tenets of conservation literacy based on emergent themes and the connections between them explicit in our data: place‐based learning creates personal meaning making; individual experience nested within collective (i.e., program‐wide) experience facilitates an understanding of the ecosystem process and function at local and regional scales; and science‐based meaning making creates informed concern (i.e., the ability to discern both natural and anthropogenic forcing), which allows individuals to develop a personalized prioritization schema and engage in conservation action.  相似文献

Although emission inventories are the foundation of air quality management and have supported substantial improvements in North American air quality, they have a number of shortcomings that can potentially lead to ineffective air quality management strategies. Major reductions in the largest emissions sources have made accurate inventories of previously minor sources much more important to the understanding and improvement of local air quality. Changes in manufacturing processes, industry types, vehicle technologies, and metropolitan infrastructure are occurring at an increasingly rapid pace, emphasizing the importance of inventories that reflect current conditions. New technologies for measuring source emissions and ambient pollutant concentrations, both at the point of emissions and from remote platforms, are providing novel approaches to collecting data for inventory developers. Advances in information technologies are allowing data to be shared more quickly, more easily, and processed and compared in novel ways that can speed the development of emission inventories. Approaches to improving quantitative measures of inventory uncertainty allow air quality management decisions to take into account the uncertainties associated with emissions estimates, providing more accurate projections of how well alternative strategies may work. This paper discusses applications of these technologies and techniques to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of emission inventories across North America and outlines a series of eight recommendations aimed at inventory developers and air quality management decision-makers to improve emission inventories and enable them to support effective air quality management decisions for the foreseeable future.  相似文献

Condition indices (CI), hepatosomatic indices (HSI) and proximate, lipid and fatty acid composition of wild and laboratory-reared yellowtail flounder (Limanda ferruginea) (Storer, 1839) were compared from data taken throughout spring and summer 1996–1998. Cluster analysis was performed on the fatty acid signatures of these two groups along with a commercial diet and several invertebrate species to determine possible feeding patterns in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. HSI and levels of storage fat were significantly higher in the muscle and liver of laboratory-reared yellowtail flounder, indicating an efficient absorption of dietary lipid and an increase in fat deposition. Fatty acid analysis of the liver showed that wild fish contained significantly higher proportions of the essential fatty acids 20:46, 20:53 and 22:63; whereas proportions of 18:1 and 18:26 were significantly higher in all fractions of lipid examined from laboratory-reared fish than they were from wild fish. Polar fractions of lipid were more similar than the neutral fraction of lipid when comparing wild and laboratory-reared fish. Taken together, the differences in CI, HSI, proximate and fatty acid composition suggest that feeding commercial diets to L. ferruginea can cause changes in patterns of lipid deposition and metabolism. Cluster analysis of marine plankton, sedimenting particulate matter, wild invertebrates, the commercial diet and fish tissues showed that the fatty acid signatures of both wild and laboratory-reared yellowtail flounder closely resembled their respective food items. Fatty acid signatures from wild fish were more closely related to plankton and settling particulate matter, suggesting relatively few steps in the food web leading to yellowtail flounder. In addition to the resemblance between fatty acids in the commercial diet and the tissues of laboratory-reared yellowtail flounder, these fish had similar fatty acid signatures to those of wild invertebrates.Communicated by J.P. During early development, oviparous fish species must use finite lipid and fatty acid (FA) reserves for both catabolism and structural components. In cold environments, developing fish have the additional constraint of maintaining membrane fluidity for metabolic efficiency (homeoviscous adaptation), resulting in further demand on lower melting point FAs like n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). To examine whether marine fish embryos physiologically adapt to changing temperature environments, we incubated Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) eggs at 5 temperatures (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 °C) in the laboratory and sampled them repeatedly during development to measure changes in lipid/FA composition. Pacific cod embryos increased n-3 PUFA content during the egg stage in all temperature treatments, with the possible exception of 0 °C, where poor survival and hatch success limited our ability for continued sampling. At the beginning of the hatch cycle, free-swimming embryos shifted from lipogenesis to lipid catabolism. The rates of lipogenesis and catabolism were temperature dependent, and the distinct increase in unsaturated fatty acids at temperatures <8 °C was consistent with homeoviscous adaptation theory. However, with the possible exception of embryos at 0 °C, the relative amounts of essential fatty acids (e.g., EPA, DHA, AA) were conserved in a similar manner across incubation temperatures. Collectively, these data suggest Pacific cod are capable of homeoviscous adaptation but cannot tolerate temperatures approaching 0 °C despite their possible ability to biosynthesize PUFAs from other energetic sources.  相似文献

Air quality improvement in Los Angeles can inform air quality policies in developing cities. Emission control efforts, their results, costs and health benefits are briefly summarized. Today's developing cities face new challenges including regional pollution. Air quality issues in Beijing are briefly compared and contrasted with Los Angeles. Opportunities for co-benefits for climate and air quality improvement are identified. Air quality improvement in Los Angeles, California is reviewed with an emphasis on aspects that may inform air quality policy formulation in developing cities. In the mid-twentieth century the air quality in Los Angeles was degraded to an extent comparable to the worst found in developing cities today; ozone exceeded 600 ppb and annual average particulate matter <10 mm reached ~150 mg·m−3. Today's air quality is much better due to very effective emission controls; e.g., modern automobiles emit about 1% of the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emitted by vehicles of 50 years ago. An overview is given of the emission control efforts in Los Angeles and their impact on ambient concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants; the costs and health benefits of these controls are briefly summarized. Today's developing cities have new challenges that are discussed: the effects of regional pollution transport are much greater in countries with very high population densities; often very large current populations must be supplied with goods and services even while economic development and air quality concerns are addressed; and many of currently developing cities are located in or close to the tropics where photochemical processing of pollution is expected to be more rapid than at higher latitudes. The air quality issues of Beijing are briefly compared and contrasted with those of Los Angeles, and the opportunities for co-benefits for climate and air quality improvement are pointed out.  相似文献

Ambient measurements of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides from three mega-cities (Beijing, Mexico City, Tokyo) are compared with similar measurements from US cities in the mid-1980s and the early 2000s. The common hydrocarbon pattern seen in all data sets suggests that emissions associated with gasoline-fueled vehicles dominate in all of these cities. This commonality suggests that it will be efficient and, ultimately, cost effective to proceed with vehicular emission controls in most emerging mega-cities, while proceeding with development of more locally appropriate air quality control strategies through emissions inventory development and ambient air monitoring. Over the three decades covered by the US data sets, the hydrocarbon emissions decreased by a significant factor (something like an order of magnitude), which is greater than suggested by emission inventories, particularly the EDGAR international inventory. The ambient hydrocarbon and CO concentrations reported for the three non-US mega-cities are higher than present US ambient concentrations, but lower than those observed in the 1980s in the US. The one exception to the preceding statement is the high concentrations of CO observed in Beijing, which apparently have a large regional contribution.  相似文献

Elevated carbon monoxide (CO) mixing ratios in excess of those derived from emissions inventories have been observed in plumes from one gas- and coal-fired power plant and three of four lignite coal-fired electric utility power plants observed in east and central Texas. Observations of elevated CO on days characterized by differing wind directions show that CO emissions from the lignite plants were relatively constant over time and cannot be ascribed to separate sources adjacent to the power plants. These three plants were found to be emitting CO at rates 22 to 34 times those tabulated in State and Federal emissions inventories. Elevated CO emissions from the gas- and coal-fired plant were highly variable on time scales of hours to days, in one case changing by a factor of 8 within an hour. Three other fossil-fueled power plants, including one lignite-fired plant observed during this study, did not emit substantial amounts of CO, suggesting that a combination of plant operating conditions and the use of lignite coal may contribute to the enhanced emissions. Observed elevated CO emissions from the three lignite plants, if representative of average operating conditions, represent an additional 30% of the annual total CO emissions from point sources for the state of Texas.  相似文献
