N2 fixation (C2H2 reduction) was associated with several species of macroalgae on a coral reef near Grand Bahama Island. The highest rates were associated with Microdictyon sp. (Chlorophyceae) and Dictyota sp. (Phaeophyceae). Extensive mats of filamentous blue-green algae, not heterotrophic bacteria, were the N2 fixing agents: in experiments with samples of Microdictyon sp., the activity was lightdependent and not stimulated by organic compounds under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. Assays in situ, at 20 m depth, and on shipboard, gave similar rates of N2 fixation; the cyanophytes presumably have pigment adaptations to function in blue light. The maximum rate of N2 fixation, associated with Microdictyon sp., was 3.8 g N fixed g dry weight-1 h-1. Coral-reef communities flourish in nutrientimpoverished waters, and therefore any input of nitrogen is probably important in stabilizing such ecosystems. 相似文献

Ring chromosome 21 is a rare chromosome anomaly often associated with mental retardation and dysmorphic features. Less commonly, the ring chromosome can be familial and associated with a normal phenotype. Phenotypically normal female carriers, however, are at increased risk of having children with Down syndrome, mosaic monosomy 21, and variable duplication or deletion of chromosome 21. Because of the relative mitotic and meiotic instability of ring chromosomes, abnormal cytogenetic findings encountered during prenatal diagnosis may not reflect the true genetic status of the fetus. This is a report of a phenotypically normal female carrier of a familial ring 21 chromosome. Prenatal diagnosis on her twin pregnancy revealed a mosaic 46,XX,r(21)(p13;q22) (77 per cent)/45,XX, – 21 in one fetus and a normal male karyotype in the second. The pregnancy was carried to term. Both infants are completely normal, with a non-mosaic ring 21 karyotype from the lymphocytes of one twin. The diagnostic uncertainty and problematic genetic counselling related to fetal cytogenetic abnormalities are the subjects of this report. 相似文献

Bioremediation of coal tar PAH in soils using biodiesel 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The addition of biodiesel together with nitrate and phosphate to soil containing coal tar, in laboratory and field experiments, resulted in degradation of coal tar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) that was not apparent when the nutrients alone were added. The addition of motor diesel fuel instead of biodiesel was also tested. Over the 55 days of the field and laboratory experiments, the biodiesel resulted in an increased degradation of naphthalene in the coal tar by 52% and 85%, respectively, and motor diesel resulted in increased depletions of 85% and 96%, respectively. Other PAH containing up to four rings were depleted to lesser extents. The increases in PAH biodegradation by the diesel treatments were ascribed to tar solubilisation and dispersion thereby increasing the PAH bioavailability. The ready biodegradability and low phytotoxicity of biodiesel suggest that it may be suitable as a novel treatment for the bioremediation of coal tar contaminated soils. 相似文献

This paper reviews the regulatory history for nitrogen oxides (NOx) pollutant emissions from stationary sources, primarily in coal-fired power plants. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is one of the six criteria pollutants regulated by the 1970 Clean Air Act where National Ambient Air Quality Standards were established to protect public health and welfare. We use patent data to show that in the cases of Japan, Germany, and the United States, innovations in NOx control technologies did not occur until stringent government regulations were in place, thus "forcing" innovation. We also demonstrate that reductions in the capital and operation and maintenance (O&M) costs of new generations of high-efficiency NOx control technologies, selective catalytic reduction (SCR), are consistently associated with the increasing adoption of the control technology: the so-called learning-by-doing phenomena. The results show that as cumulative world coal-fired SCR capacity doubles, capital costs decline to approximately 86% and O&M costs to 58% of their original values. The observed changes in SCR technology reflect the impact of technological advance as well as other factors, such as market competition and economies of scale. 相似文献

The adsorption and desorption of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were studied for a range of synthetic particles, a dimethylditallowammonium exchanged clay and a natural sediment. The synthetic particles were Dowex 1X8400, Toyopearl Phenyl 650M and Toyopearl SP 650M. The bioaccumulation of the DCP and PCP from these particles was then studied using the oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus. There is a correlation between contaminant-particle interactions, as determined from adsorption and desorption isotherms, and bioaccumulation. Bioaccumulation by L. variegatus was found to be highest from the systems where differences in the classification of adsorption and desorption isotherms were observed. 相似文献

This study reports the first known studies to investigate the thermal degradation of a polyester/cellulose fabric substrate ("article") treated with a fluorotelomer-based acrylic polymer under laboratory conditions conservatively representing typical combustion conditions of time, temperature, and excess air level in a municipal incinerator, with an average temperature of 1000 degrees C or greater over approximately 2s residence time. The results demonstrate that the polyester/cellulose fabric treated with a fluorotelomer-based acrylic polymer is destroyed and no detectable amount of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is formed under typical municipal incineration conditions. Therefore, textiles and paper treated with such a fluorotelomer-based acrylic polymer disposed of in municipal waste and incinerated are expected to be destroyed and not be a significant source of PFOA in the environment. 相似文献

The northern Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada, was sampled five times between March and September 1986, employing a grid of stations spanning the strait. The spring diatom bloom was not observed and may have been suppressed by a combination of wind exposure and grazing by microzooplankton, notably non-loricate oligotrichs and the dinoflagellateGyrodinium spirale. Macrozooplankton were not studied. By June, the ecosystem was dominated by flagellates, and ciliate biomass was three times greater than that of the nanoflagellates. The photosynthetic dominantHeterosigma akashiwo was possibly inhibiting diatom growth, as environmental conditions were conducive to the latter's growth. During late summer (August–September), surface waters became nutrient-depleted and a mosaic of organismal types was formed. The pattern included diatoms on the more turbulent west side, nanoflagellates on the more stable east side, and dinoflagellates in the north associated with frontal boundaries. The driving force behind the mosaic appeared to be tidal turbulence and was most effective at times of advanced water-column stratification. Other points of interest were subsurface concentrations ofChaetoceros species, which were perhaps maintained at the pycnocline by entrainment in areas of high tidal turbulence, and a large ratio of heterotrophic to photoautotrophic biomass, possibly due to mixotrophy in ciliates.Please address all correspondence and requests for reprints to Dr. Taylor at the Department of Botany 相似文献
