Globally, yam (Dioscorea spp.) is the fifth most important root crop after sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas L.) and the second most important crop in Africa in terms of production after cassava (Manihot esculenta L.) and has long been vital to food security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Climate change is expected to have its most severe impact on crops in food insecure regions, yet very little is known about impact of climate change on yam productivity. Therefore, we try estimating the effect of climate change on the yam (variety: Florido) yield and evaluating different adaptation strategies to mitigate its effect. Three regional climate models REgional MOdel (REMO), Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute Regional Climate Model (SMHIRCA), and Hadley Regional Model (HADRM3P) were coupled to a crop growth simulation model namely Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) version 3060 to simulate current and future yam yields in the Upper Ouémé basin (Benin Republic). For the future, substantial yield decreases were estimated varying according to the climate scenario. We explored the advantages of specific adaptation strategies suggesting that changing sowing date may be ineffective in counteracting adverse climatic effects. Late maturing cultivars could be effective in offsetting the adverse impacts. Whereas, by coupling irrigation and fertilizer application with late maturing cultivars, highest increase in the yam productivity could be realized which accounted up to 49 % depending upon the projection of the scenarios analyzed.  相似文献

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that women breastfeed because of improved health outcomes for mothers and children. Because maternal employment during the first year of the child's life has been identified as a reason for breastfeeding cessation, we develop and test a role‐theory‐based framework to explain women's continuation of breastfeeding after return to work (Study 1) and report results of an exploratory study linking breastfeeding at work with job attitudes and well‐being (Study 2). Applying survival analysis to a longitudinal dataset gathered by the Centers for Disease Control (Study 1), we identify pregnant women's perceived employer support for breastfeeding as a predictor of women's breastfeeding goal intentions. Supervisors' negative workplace remarks about breastfeeding related to an eightfold increase of women's likelihood to discontinue exclusive breastfeeding and perceived support for breastfeeding after return to work predicted exclusive breastfeeding continuation. Results of Study 2 suggest that women who return to work and continue breastfeeding experience more family‐to‐work conflict and overload than women who do not reconcile work and breastfeeding. Further, results of Study 2 provide preliminary evidence suggesting that perceptions of supervisor and coworker support for breastfeeding relate positively to general perceptions of organizational support and negatively to depressive symptoms. Use of the internet as a trade platform has resulted in a shift in the illegal wildlife trade. Increased scrutiny of illegal wildlife trade has led to concerns that online trade of wildlife will move onto the dark web. To provide a baseline of illegal wildlife trade on the dark web, we downloaded and archived 9852 items (individual posts) from the dark web, then searched these based on a list of 121 keywords associated with illegal online wildlife trade, including 30 keywords associated with illegally traded elephant ivory on the surface web. Results were compared with items known to be illegally traded on the dark web, specifically cannabis, cocaine, and heroin, to compare the extent of the trade. Of these 121 keywords, 4 resulted in hits, of which only one was potentially linked to illegal wildlife trade. This sole case was the sale and discussion of Echinopsis pachanoi (San Pedro cactus), which has hallucinogenic properties. This negligible level of activity related to the illegal trade of wildlife on the dark web relative to the open and increasing trade on the surface web may indicate a lack of successful enforcement against illegal wildlife trade on the surface web.  相似文献

Recent improvements in field‐portable analytical equipment allow accurate on‐site measurement of VOCs present in air at concentrations of less than 0.1 parts per million volume (ppmv). The objective of this project is to determine if the use of these instruments for vapor‐phase measurements of headspace in a monitoring well can serve as a reliable and accurate method for monitoring volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in groundwater under equilibrium conditions. As part of a comprehensive research project investigating the utility of this proposed monitoring method, the authors have completed a laboratory validation study to identify instruments and sample‐collection methods that will provide accurate measurement of VOC concentrations in groundwater. This laboratory validation study identified two field‐portable instruments (a gas chromatograph and a photoionization detector) with sufficient sensitivity to measure VOCs in groundwater at concentrations below typical monitoring standards (i.e., 1 to 5 μg/L). The accuracy and precision of these field instruments was sufficient to satisfy typical data‐quality objectives for laboratory‐based analysis. In addition, two sample‐collection methods were identified that yield vapor‐phase samples in equilibrium with water: direct headspace sampling and passive diffusion samplers. These sample‐collection methods allow the field instruments (which measure VOC concentrations in vapor‐phase samples) to be used to measure VOC concentrations in water. After further validation of these sample‐collection methods in the field, this monitoring method will provide a simple way to obtain accurate real‐time measurements of VOC concentrations in groundwater using inexpensive field‐portable analytical instruments. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A global, first-order kinetic model was found to fit the data for the isothermal wet oxidation of elemental white phosphorus (P4) in a batch, stirred-tank reactor. The initial concentration of white phosphorus solids was held constant at 1 g/L and an air flow of 2.0 standard liters per minute was used to supply the oxygen for the reaction. A CD6-like turbine and an A2 impeller were evaluated at speeds from 1000-2250 rpm. For the CD6-like turbine, mass transfer effects were assumed to be eliminated above 2000 rpm. Thus, the CD6-like turbine with a speed of 2250 rpm was selected for the isothermal studies. Particle size and temperature were varied. For the isothermal conditions, the first order kinetic constant varied from 0.022 min-1 at 46 °C to 0.078 min-1 at 80 °C. The apparent activation energy was 6.78 kcal/mol. Oxygen reacted with the suspended P4 particles forming oxides of phosphorus, primarily phosphorus pentoxide (P4010 or P2 O5). Some of the P2O5 reacted with the water to form PO4 3- as the primary product of white phosphorus oxidation. The amount of phosphorus pentoxide absorbed in the water increased with temperature. The rate of phosphate formation followed zero order kinetics and was independent of particle size. As the temperature increased, the ratio of PO4/ PO3 increased. This observation and the apparently low activation energy suggest that diffusion effects may not have been eliminated completely.  相似文献

Methane biofilter (MBF) technology, a cost effective method to control atmospheric emission of CH4, is usually developed as a passively aerated system to control low-volume point-source emissions such as those from landfills with gas collection systems. Actively aerated high-rate methane biofilter (HMBF) systems are designed to overcome the shortcomings of passively aerated systems by ensuring the entire filter bed is utilized for CH4 oxidation. Flow-through column experiments point to the fact that CH4 oxidation rates of actively aerated systems could be several times higher than that of passively aerated systems. However, reports of the performance of field HMBF systems are not available in literature. Furthermore, there are no studies that demonstrate the possibility of using laboratory data in the design and operation of field systems. The current study was conducted to fill this research gap and involve a comparative study of the performance of laboratory columns to field performance of a HMBF system using solution gas produced at an oil battery site as the CH4 source. The actively aerated column studies confirmed past results with high CH4 oxidation rates; one column received air at two injection points and achieved an oxidation rate of 1417 g/m3/d, which is the highest reported value to date for compost-filled columns. Subsequent studies at a specially designed field HMBF filled with compost showed a higher oxidation rate of 1919 g/m3/d, indicating the possibility of exceeding the high CH4 oxidation rates observed in the laboratory. The achievement of observed field oxidation rates being higher than those in the laboratory is attributed to the capability of maintaining higher temperatures in field HMBFs. Furthermore, results show that field HMBFs could operate at lower than stoichiometric air to CH4 ratios, and lower retention times than that of laboratory columns. Results indicated that laboratory columns may not truly represent field behavior, and said results could only be used in the preliminary design of field HMBFs.  相似文献

Coastal barrier environments are heavily influenced by human activities yet there are few examples of landscape ecological work investigating human dimensions of settlement disturbance patterns and processes. We investigated the impacts of residential development on vegetation cover for a remote roadless coastal barrier in Carova, North Carolina that is subject to policies from the federal to local levels and addressed three research questions: How has the region’s the policy history influenced patterns of residential parcel development? What are the spatial and temporal patterns of parcel development? How has development impacted patterns of barrier vegetation cover? We traced the influences of the federal 1982 Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA) designed to discourage development in risky coastal areas as well as state/local coastal policies and employed remote sensing change detection, NDVI analysis and spatial analysis and regression techniques. Results showed an acceleration of new housing structures since 1990, contrary to the intended effects of CBRA. An estimated vegetation cover loss of 437 m2 was associated with each newly developed parcel. NDVI varied along spatial and temporal gradients with more recent development having lower NDVI than older development. Recently developed parcels were larger in area, closer to the beach, and contained houses with larger footprints compared to older developed parcels. Our approach represents a place-based analytical framework for coastal barrier landscapes. Beyond the Carova case study, adopting such an approach coupling natural and human systems for the entire eastern US barrier system requires defining a comprehensive set of coastal barrier spatial units to enable typological classification and subsequent systematic investigation to inform debates regarding coastal ecosystem services and sustainability.  相似文献

A mechanistic model was applied to study the influence of diurnal vertical migration (DVM) of planktonic crustaceans on the succession and composition of the phytoplankton community. While zooplankton was restricted to only one functional group, the phytoplankton community was divided into two functional groups which are distinguished by their maximum growth rates and vulnerability to zooplankton grazing. DVM causes a pulsed grazing regime and may also entail a corresponding reduction of the cumulative daily rates of ingestion and losses of zooplankton. To study the relative importance of these two mechanisms of DVM to phytoplankton we performed a scenario analysis consisting of 5 different scenarios. The results show that DVM has a strong influence on the phytoplankton community. Well edible algae benefit during the first 3–4 weeks of summer stratification by reduced daily grazing. The typical shift from small, well edible algae to larger, poorly or non-edible phytoplankton is distinctly delayed. Under the assumption of unchanged daily grazing, however, a pulsed grazing regime has nearly no influence on the resulting phytoplankton composition. As similar effects are also found for completely non-edible phytoplankton, indirect effects via phosphorus availability must be assumed. Thus, the scenario analysis reveals that the observed effects of DVM on phytoplankton can be explained by a combination of two mechanisms: (1) reduction of the daily zooplankton grazing, and (2) changed assimilation and remineralisation of phosphorus. Surprisingly and in contradiction to earlier reports there is almost no DVM effect on phytoplankton due to the sole action of a pulsed grazing regime.  相似文献
