Objective: Injury risk curves estimate motor vehicle crash (MVC) occupant injury risk from vehicle, crash, and/or occupant factors. Many vehicles are equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that collect data including the crash speed and restraint status during a MVC. This study's goal was to use regulation-required data elements for EDRs to compute occupant injury risk for (1) specific injuries and (2) specific body regions in frontal MVCs from weighted NASS-CDS data.Methods: Logistic regression analysis of NASS-CDS single-impact frontal MVCs involving front seat occupants with frontal airbag deployment was used to produce 23 risk curves for specific injuries and 17 risk curves for Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 2+ to 5+ body region injuries. Risk curves were produced for the following body regions: head and thorax (AIS 2+, 3+, 4+, 5+), face (AIS 2+), abdomen, spine, upper extremity, and lower extremity (AIS 2+, 3+). Injury risk with 95% confidence intervals was estimated for 15–105 km/h longitudinal delta-Vs and belt status was adjusted for as a covariate.Results: Overall, belted occupants had lower estimated risks compared to unbelted occupants and the risk of injury increased as longitudinal delta-V increased. Belt status was a significant predictor for 13 specific injuries and all body region injuries with the exception of AIS 2+ and 3+ spine injuries. Specific injuries and body region injuries that occurred more frequently in NASS-CDS also tended to carry higher risks when evaluated at a 56 km/h longitudinal delta-V. In the belted population, injury risks that ranked in the top 33% included 4 upper extremity fractures (ulna, radius, clavicle, carpus/metacarpus), 2 lower extremity fractures (fibula, metatarsal/tarsal), and a knee sprain (2.4–4.6% risk). Unbelted injury risks ranked in the top 33% included 4 lower extremity fractures (femur, fibula, metatarsal/tarsal, patella), 2 head injuries with less than one hour or unspecified prior unconsciousness, and a lung contusion (4.6–9.9% risk). The 6 body region curves with the highest risks were for AIS 2+ lower extremity, upper extremity, thorax, and head injury and AIS 3+ lower extremity and thorax injury (15.9–43.8% risk).Conclusions: These injury risk curves can be implemented into advanced automatic crash notification (AACN) algorithms that utilize vehicle EDR measurements to predict occupant injury immediately following a MVC. Through integration with AACN, these injury risk curves can provide emergency medical services (EMS) and other patient care providers with information on suspected occupant injuries to improve injury detection and patient triage. 相似文献

The importance of the incorporation of personal communication devices in emergency evacuation simulators will be discussed. Four case studies are examined to identify usage statistics and human behavior when using the devices in an emergency. The case studies are: 9/11 World Trade Center Attacks, London train bombings, Virginia Tech shooting and United Flight #93. The case studies’ findings are implemented into the Vacate evacuation simulator, which uses particle swarm optimization to mimic human pedestrian behavior. The physical actions of using a device, as well as the reaction to the information transmitted during usage, are examined. Findings show that the effects of the personal communication devices can affect individuals that are close to the user of the device, as well as those not in the local vicinity of the user. These effects, combined with the rapid mainstream acceptance of communication technologies, justify the implementation of personal communication devices into evacuation simulators. 相似文献

对1980-2007年广东沿海赤潮灾害历史资料进行统计分析,研究赤潮灾害的时空分布规律和赤潮肇事种的变化规律.结果表明,广东沿海赤潮灾害总体呈上升趋势,发生频率不断增加;赤潮高发季节由过去的春季扩展到春夏秋冬季;赤潮发生海域和影响范围不断扩大;鱼毒性藻类和有毒藻越来越频繁地引发赤潮;引发赤潮灾害的生物种类不断增多,由甲藻和硅藻引发的赤潮减少,而由针胞藻类、定鞭藻类和纤毛虫类引发的赤潮明显增多.研究表明,赤潮生物种类繁多和日益增多的海洋污染可能是广东沿海赤潮灾害频发的原因. 相似文献

Several attempts have been made to test the suitability of protective measures for the handling of explosives. We investigated the suitability of safety gloves and a combined safety helmet and face shield. In the presented studies, three different experimental setups were used to simulate the effects of an explosion of a primary explosive in a glass flask on the glove or helmet protected body. Depending on the experimental setup, the fragment effects were evaluated and compared. Furthermore, the fragment distribution of an explosion inside a glass flask was investigated. The explosion of 1 g of lead azide in a 10 mL flask yielded approximately 14,000 glass fragments. However, most of the shards were accelerated down- and side-wards and only few upwards. Holding a flask on its neck (instead of its bottom) is therefore a simple but effective way of diminishing the risk of injury, when handling explosives. The safety helmet/face shield performed very well, by shielding the face from all fragments. Furthermore, it could be proven that DIN and EN standard testing procedures for gloves are unsuitable to simulate the effects of a respective explosion.In this article, the progress in the development of realistic testing procedures for the testing of gloves for the protection against fragmentation effects of glassware in situations involving explosions is reported and the results and methods of previous tests are summarized. 相似文献

The construct collective psychological ownership is introduced. Reflecting the psychology of “us” and “ours,” collective psychological ownership emerges through interactive dynamics whereby individuals come to a single and shared mind‐set as it relates to a sense of ownership for a particular object. After providing a conceptual definition for the construct, we turn our attention to a detailed elaboration of the construct, offering comments on its genesis, emergent context, underlying motives, and a discussion of what can and cannot be owned. We also provide a discussion of the dynamics associated with its formation, highlighting the paths down which groups travel that influence the emergence of this psychological state. Next, we turn our attention to the emergence of collective psychological ownership within the organizational and teamwork context paying particular attention to the role of work environment structure. We conclude with a discussion of a set of work‐related attitudinal, motivational, behavioral, and stress‐related outcomes that stem from this psychological state. PurposeThis study compared the healthcare utilization and costs for specific types of medical services among older adult women who currently drive and those who no longer drive.MethodsThis study included 347 women aged 65 or older who were either former (had stopped driving) or current drivers, randomly sampled from a large U.S. health plan to participate in a telephone survey, and who had automated health records with healthcare utilization and cost data. Bivariate analyses and generalized linear modeling were used to examine associations between driving status and healthcare utilization and costs.ResultsAdjusting for age, income, and marital status, former drivers were more likely than current drivers to use mental health care services (RR = 3.37; 95% CI: 1.03, 10.98). Former drivers also tended to use more inpatient (RR = 1.85; 95% CI: 0.88, 3.87) and emergency services (RR = 1.89; 95% CI: 0.96, 3.70), but results did not reach statistical significance. Total annual healthcare costs in 2005 were almost twice as high for former drivers compared with current drivers ($13,046 vs. $7,054; mean difference = $5,992; 95% CI: -$360, $12,344), although this relationship was not statistically significant (CR = 1.61; 95% CI: 0.88, 2.96).Impact on IndustryFormer drivers were more than three times as likely as current drivers to use mental health services, and tended to use more emergency and inpatient services. Further research on factors that potentially mediate the relationship between driving status and health service use is warranted. 相似文献

People frequently have to work in high repetitive jobs. Previous research has focused exclusively on the effects of task repetitiveness on well‐being, while neglecting effects on work performance. In the present study, we aimed to fill this void by conducting two workplace simulations with experimental manipulations of task repetitiveness. Participants worked for about 5 hours at either a computer workstation, compiling computer hardware packages according to customer requests (Experiment 1, N = 160), or at an assembly line, piecing together equipment sets for furniture (Experiment 2, N = 213). Both experiments provide consistent evidence that high repetitiveness has a detrimental effect on well‐being, whereas work performance increases under conditions of high repetitiveness. On a practical level, our study hence shows that high task repetitiveness is a double‐edged sword for both employees and organizations. On a conceptual level, our findings emphasize the necessity to account for both mental strain and work performance when examining the effects of task repetitiveness.
