The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM), USA is a paired watershed study with chemical manipulation of one watershed (West Bear = WB) while the other watershed (East Bear = EB) serves as a reference. Characterization of hydrology and chemical fluxes occurred in 1987–1989 and demonstrated the similarity of the ca. 10 ha adjacent forested watersheds. From 1989–2010, we have added 1,800 eq (NH4)2SO4 ha???1 y???1 to WB. EB runoff has slowly acidified even as atmospheric deposition of SO $_{4}^{2-}$ has declined. EB acidification included decreasing pH, base cation concentrations, and alkalinity, and increasing inorganic Al concentration, as SO $_{4}^{2-}$ declined. Organic Al increased. WB has acidified more rapidly, including a 6-year period of increasing leaching of base cations, followed by a long-term decline of base cations, although still elevated over pretreatment values, as base saturation declined in the soils. Sulfate in WB has not increased to a new steady state because of increased anion adsorption accompanying soil acidification. Dissolved Al has increased dramatically in WB; increased export of particulate Al and P has accompanied the acidification in both watersheds, WB more than EB. Nitrogen retention in EB increased after 3 years of study, as did many watersheds in the northeastern USA. Nitrogen retention in WB still remains at over 80%, in spite of 20+ years of N addition. The 20-year chemical treatment with continuous measurements of critical variables in both watersheds has enabled the identification of decadal-scale processes, including ecosystem response to declining SO $_{4}^{-2}$ in ambient precipitation in EB and evolving mechanisms of treatment response in WB. The study has demonstrated soil mechanisms buffering pH, declines in soil base saturation, altered P biogeochemistry, unexpected mechanisms of storage of S, and continuous high retention of treatment N.  相似文献

Sorption and degradation of the herbicide 2,4-D [2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid] were determined for 123 surface soils (0 to 15 cm) collected in 2002 and in 2004 between 49 degrees to 60 degrees north longitude and 110 degrees to 120 degrees west latitude in Alberta, Canada. The soils were characterized by soil organic carbon content (SOC), pH, electrical conductivity, soil texture, cation exchange capacity, carbonate content, and total soil microbial activity. The 2,4-D sorption coefficients, Kd and Koc, were highly variable with coefficients of variation of 89 and 59%, respectively, at the provincial scale. Both Kd and Koc were well described by regression models with SOC and soil pH as variables, regardless of scale. Surprisingly, variations in 2,4-D mineralization were much smaller than variations in sorption. Variability in total 2,4-D mineralization was particularly low, with a coefficient of variation of only 7% at the provincial scale. Average 2,4-D half-lives in ecoregions ranged from 1.7 to 3.5 d, much lower than the field dissipation half-life of 10 d reported for 2,4-D in general pesticide property databases. Regression models describing degradation parameters were generally poor or not significant because 2,4-D mineralization was only weakly associated with measured 2,4-D sorption parameters and soil properties. As such, regional variations in herbicide sorption coefficients should be measured or calculated based on soil properties, to assign distinct pesticide fate model input parameters when estimating 2,4-D off-site transport at the provincial scale. Spatial variations in herbicide degradation appear less important for Alberta as 2,4-D half-lives were similar in soils across the province. The rapid mineralization of 2,4-D is noteworthy because 2,4-D is widely used in Alberta and perhaps adaptation of soil microbial communities allowed for accelerated degradation regardless of soil properties or the extent of 2,4-D sorption by soil.  相似文献

People in the Arctic face uncertainty in their daily lives as they contend with environmental changes at a range of scales from local to global. Freshwater is a critical resource to people, and although water resource indicators have been developed that operate from regional to global scales and for midlatitude to equatorial environments, no appropriate index exists for assessing the vulnerability of Arctic communities to changing water resources at the local scale. The Arctic Water Resource Vulnerability Index (AWRVI) is proposed as a tool that Arctic communities can use to assess their relative vulnerability-resilience to changes in their water resources from a variety of biophysical and socioeconomic processes. The AWRVI is based on a social-ecological systems perspective that includes physical and social indicators of change and is demonstrated in three case study communities/watersheds in Alaska. These results highlight the value of communities engaging in the process of using the AWRVI and the diagnostic capability of examining the suite of constituent physical and social scores rather than the total AWRVI score alone.  相似文献

A study was undertaken on drained and undrained 1 ha grassland lysimeters to assess the effectiveness of multiple novel tracing techniques in understanding how agricultural slurry waste moves from land to water. Artificial fluorescent particles designed to mimic the size and density of organic slurry particles were found to move off the grassland via inter-flow (surface + lateral through-flow) and drain-flow. Where both pathways were present the drains carried the greater number of particles. The results of the natural fluorescence and δ13C of water samples were inconclusive. Natural fluorescence was higher from slurry-amended lysimeters than from zero-slurry lysimeters, however, a fluorescence decay experiment suggested that no slurry signal should be present given the time between slurry application and the onset of drainage. The δ13C values of >0.7 microm and <0.7 microm material in drainage were varied and unrelated to discharge. The mean value of >0.7 microm δ13C in water from the drain-flow pathways was higher from the lysimeter which had received naturally enriched maize slurry compared to the lysimeter which received grass slurry indicating a contribution of slurry-derived material. Values of <0.7 microm δ13C from the same pathway, however, produced counter intuitive trends and may indicate that different fractions of the slurry have different δ13C values.  相似文献

The relationships among land use patterns, geology, soil, and major solute concentrations in stream water for eight tributaries of the Kayaderosseras Creek watershed in Saratoga County, NY, were investigated using Pearson correlation coefficients and multivariate regression analysis. Sub-watersheds corresponding to each sampling site were delineated, and land use patterns were determined for each of the eight sub-watersheds using GIS. Four land use categories (urban development, agriculture, forests, and wetlands) constituted more than 99 % of the land in the sub-watersheds. Eleven water chemistry parameters were highly and positively correlated with each other and urban development. Multivariate regression models indicated urban development was the most powerful predictor for the same eleven parameters (conductivity, TN, TP, NO $_{3}^-$ , Cl?, HCO $_{3}^-$ , SO $_{4}^{2-}$ , Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+). Adjusted R 2 values, ranging from 19 to 91 %, indicated that these models explained an average of 64 % of the variance in these 11 parameters across the samples and 70 % when Mg2+ was omitted. The more common R 2, ranging from 29 to 92 %, averaged 68 % for these 11 parameters and 72 % when Mg2+ was omitted. Water quality improved most with forest coverage in stream watersheds. The strong associations between water quality variables and urban development indicated an urban source for these 11 water quality parameters at all eight sampling sites was likely, suggesting that urban stream syndrome can be detected even on a relatively small scale in a lightly developed area. Possible urban sources of Ca2+ and HCO $_{3}^-$ are suggested.  相似文献

Social learning is a process suited to developing understanding and concerted action to tackle complex resource dilemmas, such as freshwater management. Research has begun to recognise that in practice social learning encounters a variety of institutional challenges from the shared habits and routines of stakeholders (organised by rules, norms and strategies) that are embedded in organisational structures and norms of professional behaviour. These institutional habits and routines influence the degree of willingness to engage with stakeholders, and expectations of behaviours in social learning processes. Considering this, there has been a call to understand how institutions influence social learning and emergent outcomes. We addresses this by presenting a heuristic for implementing social learning cognisant of institutional context to answer three questions: (i) How institutional influences impact implementation of social learning design; (ii) how implementation of social learning design modifies institutions influencing social learning; and (iii) how these changes in design and institutions together shape social learning outcomes? To answer these questions a freshwater planning exercise was designed, implemented and evaluated as a social learning process with community groups in two New Zealand catchments. Incorporating participatory reflection enabled the project team to modify social learning design to manage institutional influences hindering progress toward outcomes. Findings emphasise that social learning is underpinned by participants’ changing assumptions about what constitutes the institution of learning itself—from instruction to a dynamic, collective and emergent process. Reflecting on these assumptions also challenged participants’ expectations about their own and others’ behaviours and roles in freshwater planning.  相似文献

The biodegradation of blends of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) has been studied. Blends of composition PCL/PVC 1:1 and 1:2 w/w were tested. The 1:1 blend contained crystals in the as-cast state and became more crystalline on exposure to different bio-active agents. The 1:2 blend was amorphous in the as-cast state but developed a significant crystal component after 4 months exposure to the bio-agents. Three bio-active agents were used and all were found to produce qualitatively similar behaviour but their activity was somewhat different. For both the 1:1 blend and the 1:2 blend the ranking of the three bio-active agents tested, in increasing order, was Curvularia sp.; Trogia buccinalis; Phanerochaete chrysosporium.  相似文献

Although theorists have suggested that aquatic environments or “blue space” might have particular restorative potential, to date there is little systematic empirical research on this issue. Indeed the presence of water has, unintentionally, been a confounding factor in research comparing people’s reactions to built and natural environments. Whereas aquatic features (rivers, lakes, coasts) are frequently present in visual stimuli representing natural environments they are rarely incorporated in stimuli portraying built environments. As many towns are, for good reason, located near water this is a potentially significant oversight. The current research collated a set of 120 photographs of natural and built scenes, half of which contained “aquatic” elements. Proportions of “aquatic”/“green”/“built” environments in each scene (e.g. 1/3rd, 2/3rds) were also standardised. Two studies investigated preferences (attractiveness, willingness to visit and willingness to pay for a hotel room with the view), affect and perceived restorativeness ratings for these photographs. As predicted, both natural and built scenes containing water were associated with higher preferences, greater positive affect and higher perceived restorativeness than those without water. Effect sizes were consistently large. Intriguingly, images of “built” environments containing water were generally rated just as positively as natural “green” space. We propose a number of avenues for further research including exploration of the mechanisms underlying these effects.  相似文献

The re-introduction of leachate back into the waste can play an important part in landfill management. It can encourage biodegradation by raising the water content and transporting bacteria, nutrients and waste products. It also enables leachate to be stored within the body of the landfill, for example to help minimise temporal variations in the load on a leachate treatment plant. It is helpful for a landfill operator to be able to estimate the rate at which the landfill can accept leachate (the maximum infiltration or injection rate), the storage capacity of the landfill and the leachate retention time. This paper discusses some of the insights obtained from the development and application of a simple conceptual model of leachate recirculation that can be used to estimate key parameter values on the basis of the hydraulic properties of the waste. The model is described, partly validated against a more rigorous numerical analysis, and then used to interpret data obtained from field tests on a real site. The shortcomings of the model in its current form are discussed, and suggestions are made as to how these might be addressed in the context of developing the model as a design tool.  相似文献
