The marine macroalga, Ulva lactuca, has been exposed to different concentrations of antifouling paint particles (4–200 mg L?1) in the presence of a fixed quantity of clean estuarine sediment and its photosynthetic response and accumulation of Cu and Zn monitored over a period of 2 days. An immediate (<2 h) toxic effect was elicited under all experimental conditions that was quantitatively related to the concentration of contaminated particles present. Likewise, the rate of leaching of both Cu and Zn was correlated with the concentration of paint particles added. Copper accumulation by the alga increased linearly with aqueous Cu concentration, largely through adsorption to the cell surface, but significant accumulation of Zn was not observed. Thus, in coastal environments where boat maintenance is practiced, discarded antifouling paint particles are an important source of Cu, but not Zn, to U. lactuca. 相似文献

The United States Environmental Protection Agency, with support from the US Department of Energy and the National Oceanographic
and Atmospheric Administration, has been evaluating the feasibility of an effects-based (critical loads) approach to atmospheric
pollutant regulation and abatement. The rationale used to develop three of the six steps in a flexible assessment framework
(Strickland and others, 1992) is presented along with a discussion of a variety of implementation approaches and their ramifications.
The rationale proposes that it is necessary to provide an explicit statement of the condition of the resource that is considered
valuable (assessment end point) because: (1) individual ecosystem components may be more or less sensitive to deposition,
(2) it is necessary to select indicators of ecosystem condition that can be objectively measured and that reflect changes
in the quality of the assessment end point, and (3) acceptable status (i.e., value of indicator and quality of assessment
end point at critical load) must be defined. The rationale also stresses the importance of defining the assessment regions
and subregions to improve the analysis and understanding of the indicator response to deposition. Subregional definition can
be based on a variety of criteria, including informed judgment or quantitative procedures. It also depends on the geographic
scale at which exposure and effects models are accurate and on data availability, resolution, and quality.

The US Department of Defense (DOD) manages over 10.1 million ha of land, much of which is used for training military personnel.
However, vast sections receive little or no use, and military lands have become refuges for many species. At Fort McCoy, Wisconsin,
USA, populations of the endangered Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) are found in oak and pine barren communities where wild lupine (Lupinus perennis), a perennial forb required by Karner blue butterfly larvae, still occurs. Oak and pine barren communities are disturbance-dependent,
and the barrens ecosystems in the Midwest have declined in extent by 98% because of fire suppression, succession, and habitat
fragmentation. We studied the effects of disturbance by military manuever training on the density of lupine and Karner blue
butterfly at Fort McCoy. We also wanted to determine whether military training activity could enhance Karner blue butterfly
habitat.
At locations where tracked vehicles had driven through lupine patches, the abundance of lupine and nectar-producing plants
was greater in the median strip between vehicle ruts than in vehicle ruts or 5 m outside the vehicle ruts. The proportion
of lupine stems with Karner blue butterfly larvae feeding sign (the ratio of stems fed upon to stems examined) was greater
in areas where military vehicles had traveled than where they had not. The proportion of lupine stems with feeding sign and
lupine stem density was also positively related to the occurrence of prior bivouacs and fires caused by military munitions.
Shrub and forest canopy abundance were lower in areas traveled by tracked vehicles. At the scale of the lupine patch, lupine
abundance and the proportion of lupine stems with feeding sign were positively correlated with military training activities,
suggesting that maintenance of lupine habitat can be achieved in concert with military training. 相似文献

Limited evidence to date suggests that acidic precipitation promotes leaching of nutrient cations from conifer foliage. In order to evaluate the relative contribution of the apoplast cation exchange complex and symplast nutrient pools to the leached ions, the magnitude of foliar leaching in response to acidic solutions was compared to foliar apoplast cation exchange capacity (CEC) for two conifer tree species (Pseudotsuga menziesii and Picea engelmanii). Leaching potential was determined by immersing detached needles in acidic solutions (pH5.6, 3.1, 2.1) over a range of time intervals (1, 4, 8, 24 h) and foliar apoplast cation exchange capacity was determined by potentiometric titration. Leaching increased with decreasing pH and increasing time of immersion. At pH values 2.1 and 3.1, equivalents of H+ depleted from the acidic solutions approximated equivalents of base cations gained by the solutions. Maximum amounts leached were less than 40 microeq g(-1) dry weight of needles for the combination of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Measured foliar apoplast CEC for these species was approximately 120 microeq g(-1) dry weight of needles. These relative magnitudes indicate that the apoplast rather than the symplast provided the leached ions. Because the apoplast foliar cation exchange capacity appears to be large relative to the rates of H+ diffusion across the cuticle, it may help to insulate the symplast nutrient reservoir from exposure to the H+ of acidic solutions bathing the foliage. 相似文献

This paper examines the problems and operation of waste paper recycling in the UK. Long- and short-term forecasts for demand are developed, showing demand strongly correlated with Gross Domestic Product. These are used to simulate a buffer stock scheme and establish costs for operating such a scheme. The authors conclude, given that the only large source of waste paper not fully exploited is the householder, then grants for developing waste upgrading technologies are likely to be more effective than buffer stock schemes. 相似文献

Most methods used to evaluate streambed conditions as part of biological monitoring or assessment programs are selected for ease of use, but can be subjective, inappropriate, and often of unknown accuracy. We developed a portable, light‐weight device to quantify deposited unconsolidated sediment (particles <2 mm) in wadeable streams. This deposited sediment sampler is a hand‐held unit that circumscribes an area of the streambed and through suction creates a force that suspends unconsolidated materials into a collector. Laboratory evaluations determined the efficiency (percent of available deposited sediment recovered) of the sampler to collect different sizes and concentrations of deposited sediment under differing streambed conditions, which allowed appropriate correction factors to be applied to each of four categories of streambed particle size. Field trials comparing our sampler to other methods commonly used by many state and federal agencies showed high comparability. We studied the leaching of copper and zinc from particles of discarded boat paint added to tap water (pH 7.3) and rain water (pH = 4.7), simulating conditions encountered during the hosing or runoff of antifouling waste. Leaching rates appeared to be diffusion-controlled and were greater in rain water than in tap water and were greater for Zn than for Cu. After a period of 120 h, between about 0.5% and 3% of total Cu and 5-30% of total Zn had been released to the aqueous phase. These observations suggest that Cu and Zn mobilised from fine antifouling particulates during washdown or rainfall events may be important contaminants of runoff and soils in the vicinity of boat repair facilities. 相似文献
