Over a period of 25 months, all antenatal patients were offered a detailed ultrasound scan at 18–20 weeks' gestation. The lateral cerebral ventricles were scanned for the presence of choroid plexus cysts. Fifty-one patients found to have choroid plexus cysts were offered amniocentesis to exclude chromosomal abnormalities. One pregnancy, in which the only abnormality found was bilateral choroid plexus cysts, was terminated after trisomy 18 was detected on amniocentesis at 19 weeks. The other 50 pregnancies had normal fetal outcomes. The significance of the isolated finding of choroid plexus cysts is reviewed.  相似文献

Climate variability, particularly the frequency of extreme events, is likely to increase in the coming decades, with poorly understood consequences for terrestrial ecosystems. Hydroclimatic variations of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) provide a setting for studying ecological responses to recent climate variability at magnitudes and timescales comparable to expectations of coming centuries. We examined forest response to the MCA in the humid western Great Lakes region of North America, using proxy records of vegetation, fire, and hydroclimate. Multi-decadal moisture variability during the MCA was associated with a widespread, episodic decline in Fagus grandifolia (beech) populations. Spatial patterns of drought and forest changes were coherent, with beech declining only in areas where proxy-climate records indicate that severe MCA droughts occurred. The occurrence of widespread, drought-induced ecological changes in the Great Lakes region indicates that ecosystems in humid regions are vulnerable to rapid changes in drought magnitude and frequency.  相似文献

The granulation process, physic-chemical properties, pollution removal ability and bacterial communities of aerobic granules with different feed-wastewater (synthetic wastewater, R1; swine wastewater, R2), and the change trend of some parameters of two types of granules in long-term operated reactors treating swine wastewater were investigated in this experiment. The result indicated that aerobic granulation with the synthetic wastewater had a faster rate compared with swine wastewater and that full granulation in R1 and R2 was reached on the 30th day and 39th day, respectively. However, although the feed wastewater also had an obvious effect on the biomass fraction and extracellular polymeric substances of the aerobic granules during the granulation process, these properties remained at a similar level after long-term operation. Moreover, a similar increasing trend could also be observed in terms of the nitrogen removal efficiencies of the aerobic granules in both reactors, and the average specific removal rates of the organics and ammonia nitrogen at the steady-state stage were 35.33 mg·g−1 VSS and 51.46 mg·g−1 VSS for R1, and 35.47 mg·g−1 VSS and 51.72 mg·g−1 VSS for R2, respectively. In addition, a shift in the bacterial diversity occurred in the granulation process, whereas bacterial communities in the aerobic granular reactor were not affected by the seed granules after long-term operation.  相似文献

A suite of 24 hour high volume air particulate samples, collected June 11–12,1969, at 25 locations in the Northwest Indiana area, has been analyzed by nondestructive neutron activation analysis for 30 trace elements. The use of Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometry and computer assisted data reduction, combined with 2-4 replications of each analysis, yielded precise results which allowed a study of the geographical distribution patterns of the elements. Some elements, such as Na, K, Ti, Al, Sm, and Eu, show only minor concentration variations over the area,while others, such as Cu, W, Cr, Zn, Sb, Ga, Br, Ag, Fe, and Ce, show large variations, indicative of important local sources. Similar distribution patterns and high correlation coefficients suggest common sources for several elements. The variations of most heavy elements significantly exceed previously reported variations of total particulate, indicating the latter to be an unsatisfactory guide for elemental distribution, especially near pollution sources. Three representative locations for measurement of elemental abundances in the area are suggested. Basing on the material emission data obtained in a test chamber, chemical mass balance (CMB) was used to assess the source apportionment of volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in three newly built timber frame houses. CMB has been proven to be able to discriminate the source contributions for two contrasted environmental conditions (with and without ventilation). The shutdown of the ventilation system caused an increase in the VOC concentrations due to the increased contribution of indoor surface materials like the door material and furniture explaining together over 65% of total VOCs. While the increase in formaldehyde concentration is mainly due to furniture (contribution of 70%), the increase in α-pinene concentration is almost exclusively attributable to the emission of door material (up to 84%). The apportionment of VOC source contributions appears as highly dependent on the position of source materials in the building (surface materials or internal materials) and the ventilation conditions explaining that the concentrations of compounds after the shutdown of ventilation system do not increase in equivalent proportion. Knowledge of indoor sources and its contributions in real conditions may help in the selection of materials and in the improvement of construction operations to reduce the indoor air pollution.  相似文献

Coral reefs worldwide are declining at an alarming rate and are under continuous threat from both natural and anthropogenic environmental stressors. Warmer sea temperatures attributed to global climate change and numerous human activities at local scales place these valuable ecosystems at risk. Reefs provide numerous services, including shoreline protection, fishing, tourism and biological diversity, which are lost through physical damage, overfishing, and pollution. Pollution can be controlled under provisions of the Clean Water Act, but these options have not been fully employed to protect coral reefs. No U.S. jurisdiction has implemented coral reef biocriteria, which are narrative or quantitative water quality standards based on the condition of a biological resource or assemblage. The President’s Ocean Action Plan directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop biological assessment methods and biological criteria for evaluating and maintaining the health of coral reef ecosystems. EPA has formed the Coral Reef Biocriteria Working Group (CRBWG) to foster development of coral reef biocriteria through focused research, evaluation and communication among Agency partners and U.S. jurisdictions. Ongoing CRBWG activities include development and evaluation of a rapid bioassessment protocol for application in biocriteria programs; development of a survey design and monitoring strategy for the U.S. Virgin Islands; comprehensive reviews of biocriteria approaches proposed by states and territories; and assembly of data from a variety of monitoring programs for additional metrics. Guidance documents are being prepared to assist U.S. jurisdictions in reaching protective and defensible biocriteria.  相似文献

We manipulated availability of food and nesting sites in one population of the forest ant Myrmica punctiventris. The manipulations produced significant changes in relatedness structure, reproductive allocation, and response to hierarchical selection. Food availability appeared to have a consistently stronger influence on these aspects of social organization than did availability of nesting sites. We interpret our experimental results in light of observed differences between populations, and discuss implications for kin selection dynamics. Gaussian process models have been used in applications ranging from machine learning to fisheries management. In the Bayesian framework, the Gaussian process is used as a prior for unknown functions, allowing the data to drive the relationship between inputs and outputs. In our research, we consider a scenario in which response and input data are available from several similar, but not necessarily identical, sources. When little information is known about one or more of the populations it may be advantageous to model all populations together. We present a hierarchical Gaussian process model with a structure that allows distinct features for each source as well as shared underlying characteristics. Key features and properties of the model are discussed and demonstrated in a number of simulation examples. The model is then applied to a data set consisting of three populations of Rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas. Specifically, we model the log growth rate of the populations using a combination of lagged population sizes. The various lag combinations are formally compared to obtain the best model inputs. We then formally compare the leading hierarchical Gaussian process model with the inferential results obtained under the independent Gaussian process model.  相似文献
