An experimental study has been carried out to analyze the effect of inclined ribs used as roughness element on heat transfer along its friction characteristics. The roughness parameters include relative roughness pitch (P/e) ranges from 4–16, relative roughness height (e/Dh) ranges from 0.021–0.043 and angle of attack (α) ranges from 30° to 75°. The Reynolds number (Re) lies in the range of 4500–28000. The heat transfer and friction factor data obtained from the experiment and it is compared with the data obtained from smooth duct under the same conditions. Considerable augmentation was observed in heat transfer and friction over the smooth duct. Correlation was also developed for Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) as a function of roughness and flow parameter. 相似文献

A study was carried out to discover trends in the rainfall and temperature pattern of the Alaknanda catchment in the Central Himalaya. Data on the annual rainfall, monsoon rainfall for the last decade, and average annual temperatures over the last few decades were analyzed. Nonparametric methods (Mann-Kendall and Sen's method) were employed to identify trends. The Mann-Kendall test shows a decline in rainfall and rise in temperature, and these trends were found to be statistically significant at the 95% confidence level for both transects. Sen's method also confirms this trend. This aspect has to be considered seriously for the simple reason that if the same trend continues in the future, more chances of drought are expected. The impact of climate change has been well perceived by the people of the catchment, and a coping mechanism has been developed at the local level. 相似文献

This study employed a cross-country panel data model to investigate the relative contributions of sociopolitical, natural and cultural characteristics and national tourism policies to international tourism growth. International tourism receipt data were adjusted for country-specific inflation and then analyzed in relation to standardized measures of the World Economic Forum’s “pillars of tourism competitiveness.” Results indicated that international tourism receipts are more responsive to policies and regulations favoring tourism, abundance of natural resources, richness in cultural heritage, and health and hygiene than they are to infrastructure, safety, price competitiveness, and other variables. Findings highlight key factors associated with international tourism receipts and provide a general framework that could inform policies and management strategies designed to promote sustainable international tourism development. 相似文献

Our study explores the nexus between forests and local communities through participatory assessments and household surveys in the central Himalayan region. Forest dependency was compared among villages surrounded by oak-dominated forests (n = 8) and pine-dominated forests (n = 9). Both quantitative and qualitative analyses indicate variations in the degree of dependency based on proximity to nearest forest type. Households near oak-dominated forests were more dependent on forests (83.8%) compared to households near pine-dominated forests (69.1%). Forest dependency is mainly subsistence-oriented for meeting basic household requirements. Livestock population, cultivated land per household, and non-usage of alternative fuels are the major explanatory drivers of forest dependency. Our findings can help decision and policy makers to establish nested governance mechanisms encouraging prioritized site-specific conservation options among forest-adjacent households. Additionally, income diversification with respect to alternate livelihood sources, institutional reforms, and infrastructure facilities can reduce forest dependency, thereby, allowing sustainable forest management. 相似文献

Crop and livestock depredation by wildlife is a primary driver of human–wildlife conflict, a problem that threatens the coexistence of people and wildlife globally. Understanding mechanisms that underlie depredation patterns holds the key to mitigating conflicts across time and space. However, most studies do not consider imperfect detection and reporting of conflicts, which may lead to incorrect inference regarding its spatiotemporal drivers. We applied dynamic occupancy models to elephant crop depredation data from India between 2005 and 2011 to estimate crop depredation occurrence and model its underlying dynamics as a function of spatiotemporal covariates while accounting for imperfect detection of conflicts. The probability of detecting conflicts was consistently <1.0 and was negatively influenced by distance to roads and elevation gradient, averaging 0.08–0.56 across primary periods (distinct agricultural seasons within each year). The probability of crop depredation occurrence ranged from 0.29 (SE 0.09) to 0.96 (SE 0.04). The probability that sites raided by elephants in primary period t would not be raided in primary period t + 1 varied with elevation gradient in different seasons and was influenced negatively by mean rainfall and village density and positively by distance to forests. Negative effects of rainfall variation and distance to forests best explained variation in the probability that sites not raided by elephants in primary period t would be raided in primary period t + 1. With our novel application of occupancy models, we teased apart the spatiotemporal drivers of conflicts from factors that influence how they are observed, thereby allowing more reliable inference on mechanisms underlying observed conflict patterns. We found that factors associated with increased crop accessibility and availability (e.g., distance to forests and rainfall patterns) were key drivers of elephant crop depredation dynamics. Such an understanding is essential for rigorous prediction of future conflicts, a critical requirement for effective conflict management in the context of increasing human–wildlife interactions. 相似文献

Residual stress profile in a component is often considered as the critical characteristic as it directly affects the fatigue life of a machined component. This work presents an analytical model for the prediction of residual stresses in orthogonal machining of AISI4340 steel. The novelty of the model lies in the physics-based approach focusing on the nature of contact stresses in various machining zones and the effect of machining temperature. The model incorporates: (i) stresses in three contact regions viz. shear, tool-nose-work piece and tool flank and machined surface, (ii) machining temperature, (iii) strain, strain rate and temperature dependent work material properties, (iv) plastic stresses evaluation by two algorithms, S-J and hybrid, (v) relaxation procedure and (iv) cutting conditions. The model benchmarking shows (86–88%) agreement between the experimental and predicted residual stresses in the X- and Y-directions. On the machined surface, the tensile residual stresses decrease with an increase the edge radius and increase with an increase the cutting speed. However, below the surface, the compressive residual stresses increase with an increase the depth of cut. Further, it is observed that the proposed model with hybrid algorithm gives better results at a lower feed rate, whereas with the S-J algorithm, at a higher feed rate. 相似文献
