A growing number of studies conducted on diverse taxa have shown that extra-pair/group paternity is higher than what would
be predicted from behavioral observations alone. While it may be beneficial for females to mate with multiple males, this
often results in offspring not sired by the behavioral father, which could influence offspring survival, especially in social
mammals. Feral horses (Equus caballus) maintain stable social relationships over several years, usually with one stallion defending a harem band of unrelated mares
against other males. Sneak copulations by subordinate males have been observed and mares sometimes change bands, both of which
can result in foals sired by males other than the dominant band stallion. We measured female fidelity in free-ranging feral
horses in 23 bands, with 51 foals over four foaling seasons and tested offspring paternity against parental behaviors. We
used 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci and the program CERVUS 2.0 to determine and exclude potential sires. The majority
of mares remained in the band with the sire of their foal resulting in most foals being sired by the band stallion. Most foals
that were not sired by the band stallion were born in the year after a round-up and we could not determine if they were the
result of band changing or sneak copulations. Foals born into a band without their sire had lower survival rates and mothers
were significantly more protective of foals not sired by the band stallion. These findings suggest that band stability increases
the reproductive success of mares and support the importance of infanticide risk in equid social structure. 相似文献

Little is known about the microbial communities carried in wind-eroded sediments from various soil types and land management systems. The novel technique of pyrosequencing promises to expand our understanding of the microbial diversity of soils and eroded sediments because it can sequence 10 to 100 times more DNA fragments than previous techniques, providing enhanced exploration into what microbes are being lost from soil due to wind erosion. Our study evaluated the bacterial diversity of two types of wind-eroded sediments collected from three different organic-rich soils in Michigan using a portable field wind tunnel. The wind-eroded sediments evaluated were a coarse sized fraction with 66% of particles >106 μm (coarse eroded sediment) and a finer eroded sediment with 72% of particles <106 μm. Our findings suggested that (i) bacteria carried in the coarser sediment and fine dust were effective fingerprints of the source soil, although their distribution may vary depending on the soil characteristics because certain bacteria may be more protected in soil surfaces than others; (ii) coarser wind-eroded sediment showed higher bacterial diversity than fine dust in two of the three soils evaluated; and (iii) certain bacteria were more predominant in fine dust (, , and ) than coarse sediment ( and ), revealing different locations and niches of bacteria in soil, which, depending on wind erosion processes, can have important implications on the soil sustainability and functioning. Infrared spectroscopy showed that wind erosion preferentially removes particular kinds of C from the soil that are lost via fine dust. Our study shows that eroded sediments remove the active labile organic soil particulates containing key microorganisms involved in soil biogeochemical processes, which can have a negative impact on the quality and functioning of the source soil. 相似文献

This study investigates consequences of future changes to the provision of ecosystem services (ES) in the Romanian Carpathians. Two 2040 forest management scenarios were compared, using two indicators to describe the gains and losses of ES. Changes in landslide regulation potential were defined as changes to landslide susceptibility. High nature value grasslands characterized biodiversity support. The business as usual scenario results in a 8% lower loss of landslide regulation potential compared to the alternative scenario. It also results in a 29% higher regional net gain of landslide regulation potential. Both scenarios result in the loss of biodiversity support due to their prevalent transition of forest expansion. This type of information is crucial for informing decision makers on the locations of potential gains and losses of future development. 相似文献

Integrating the social and natural sciences in environmental research: a discussion paper 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Veronica Strang 《Environment, Development and Sustainability》2009,11(1):1-18
This paper considers the practical and intellectual challenges that attend efforts to integrate the social and natural sciences
in environmental research, and the broader political, social and economic context in which this takes place. Based on the
experiences of researchers in Australia—but with obvious relevance for researchers in many countries—it is the outcome of
an interdisciplinary workshop which brought together social and natural scientists involved in environmental management. This
event and the wider discussions that followed were initiated to enable researchers to exchange ideas about the obstacles to
interdisciplinary collaboration, and to discuss ways to overcome these. The paper provides a summary of the issues and proposes
some guidelines for interdisciplinary collaboration. These may be summarised as follows:
In collaboration with a range of social and natural scientists. The workshop that initiated this paper was attended by the
following researchers and resource managers: Eva Abal (Natural scientist, Scientific Coordinator, Healthy Waterways, Queensland)
Lyn Aitkin (at the time of the workshop, Senior Natural Resource Officer, Queensland Government, Natural Resources and Mines,
now Policy and Research Coordinator with the Department of Justice and Attorney-General) John Bradley (Anthropologist, Monash
University) Leah Burns (Anthropologist, Griffith University) Elaine Green (Geologist, Healthy Waterways Liaison Officer, Queensland)

(Interdisciplinary Social Scientist, University of Queensland) Marie Seeman (Post-graduate student, University of Western
Australia) Veronica Strang (Anthropologist, University of Auckland) Franca Tamisari (Anthropologist, University of Queensland)

Community Support Officer) Allan Dale (Queensland Government, Natural Resources and Mines, General Manager of Regional NRM
Taskforce) Steve Dawson (Environmental Scientist, Northern Gulf Regional Management Group) Michael Digby (Land and Sea Management

Officer, Water Planning) Jim Fewings (Environmental Protection Agency) Stephanie Hogan (Geologist, Queensland Government,

• | There is an overarching need to begin with—and maintain—intellectual, social and practical equalities throughout the entire research process. |
• | There is a need, in the academe and in public discourse, for reflexive critiques of the conceptual models that are used to consider ‘the environment’, to challenge the dualism that separates and compartmentalises ‘nature’ as a kind of technical ecology. |
• | Research design needs to begin with an in-depth discussion about theory, and efforts to ensure that all participants are able to make use of (or at least see where their research fits into) a model that conceptually integrates socio-cultural and biophysical complexities. |
• | Participants need to have equal input into the design of all stages of the research: the key questions, the basic approach, and the kinds of methods, data and analysis that will be used. |
• | Collaboration requires a significant amount of time to be spent in communication between the participants, so that all achieve at least a basic understanding of the types of theory, methods, data and analysis used by the others. Time and funding should be built into the process to enable this. |
• | In major research projects, there is a case for employing someone with appropriate expertise, to facilitate the team’s internal communications and to liaise with potential research users. |
• | Consideration should be given to the ‘profile’ of collaborative research projects, so that participants can feel confident that their disciplinary identities will not be denigrated, appropriated, or consumed by assimilation. |
• | In developing timetables and budgets for research, there needs to be greater recognition of different temporal needs. Rather than imposing a schedule that reflects only some disciplinary timeframes, each disciplinary area should be allocated time and funds in accord with its particular temporal realities. |
• | Interdisciplinary projects have to deal with types of data that are rarely comparable, and do not mesh readily. Collaborators should consider how their data will be managed and whether they can be incorporated into—or at least linked with—systemic schemes that will encourage integrative ways of managing and possibly reconceptualising their information. |
• | Rather than being homogenised, the outputs of collaborative research should reflect the diverse needs and qualities of each of the disciplines involved. Consideration should therefore be given to whether (and how) outputs will be integrated or at least positioned to inform and complement each other |
• | Project designers should be bold in allocating realistic amounts of time and funds to support the kinds of changes in research design that will lead to successful interdisciplinary collaborations. |

This study demonstrates that ultrasound rapidly degrades the energetic compounds RDX (cyclo-1,3,5-trinitramine-2,4,6-trimethylene) and ADN (ammonium dinitramide) in aqueous microheterogeneous media. The conditions for effective degradation of these nitramines, as monitored by UV absorption spectroscopy, were determined by varying sonication time, the heterogeneous phase and its suspension density, and the concentration of NaOH. In the presence of 5 mg/ml of aluminum powder and at pH approximately 12 (10 mM NaOH), 74% of the RDX and 86% of the ammonium dinitramide (ADN) in near-saturated solutions decompose within the first 20 min of sonication (20 kHz; 50 W; < or =5 degrees C). Sonication without Al powder and base yields minimal degradation of either RDX and ADN (approximately 5-10%) or the nitrite/nitrate ions that are expected byproducts during RDX and ADN degradation. Sonication at high pH in the presence of dispersed aluminosilicate zeolite, alumina, or titanium dioxide also yields minimal degradation. Preliminary electrochemical studies and product analyses indicate that in situ ultrasonic generation of metallic aluminum and/or aluminum hydride drives reductive denitration of the nitramines. Sonochemical treatment in the presence of a reductant offers an effective and rapid waste remediation option for energetic waste compounds. 相似文献

Influence of irrigation methods and use of an adjuvant on the persistence of the carbaryl (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) on pakchoi [Brassica rapa L. subsp. chinensis (Rupr.) Olsson] was studied using a commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay kit. After applying carbaryl at a.i. 10.6 g L(-1) with or without an adjuvant (Latron B-1956) to leaves, plants were provided water daily by either overhead or basal application. Pesticide residue on leaf tissues was examined immediately after pesticide application and on 2, 4, 6, and 8 d after pesticide application. Use of the adjuvant did not affect the initial deposit of the pesticide, however pesticide persistence was improved with the adjuvant regardless of irrigation. Overhead irrigation contributed to rapid loss of the pesticide by washing carbaryl from the leaf surface. The longest half-life of carbaryl (6.5 d) was detected on plants receiving basal irrigation plus the adjuvant while the shortest half-life (2 d) was observed when plants were treated with overhead irrigation and no adjuvant. 相似文献

Removal of cadmium ion by means of synthetic hydroxyapatite 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The reaction behaviour of synthetic hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] (HAP) toward cadmium ion was investigated for the Cd/Ca molar ratio in the range 1-0.005, by means of ions, pH measurements and XRD, SEM, IR techniques. The reaction behaviour between HAP and cadmium ion could be explained by a formation of an amorphous phase and/or a sorption mechanism. 相似文献

Tailings from abandoned mercury mines represent an important pollution source by metals and metalloids. Mercury mining in Asturias (north-western Spain) has been carried out since Roman times until the 1970s. Specific and non-specific arsenic minerals are present in the paragenesis of the Hg ore deposit. As a result of intensive mining operations, waste materials contain high concentrations of As, which can be geochemically dispersed throughout surrounding areas. Arsenic accumulation, mobility and availability in soils and sediments are strongly affected by the association of As with solid phases and granular size composition. The objective of this study was to examine phase associations of As in the fine grain size subsamples of mine wastes (La Soterraña mine site) and stream sediments heavily affected by acid mine drainage (Los Rueldos mine site). An arsenic-selective sequential procedure, which categorizes As content into seven phase associations, was applied. In spite of a higher As accumulation in the finest particle-size subsamples, As fractionation did not seem to depend on grain size since similar distribution profiles were obtained for the studied granulometric fractions. The presence of As was relatively low in the most mobile forms in both sites. As was predominantly linked to short-range ordered Fe oxyhydroxides, coprecipitated with Fe and partially with Al oxyhydroxides and associated with structural material in mine waste samples. As incorporated into short-range ordered Fe oxyhydroxides was the predominant fraction at sediment samples, representing more than 80 % of total As. 相似文献
