Hybrid system combines the nature of suspended growth and attached growth has been widely applied to wastewater treatment.
In this research, the contributions to N transformation and N2O emission by biofilm and suspended sludge in the hybrid sequencingbatch
reactor for a simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal process were investigated. For the hybrid system,
nitrification occurred mostly in the suspended sludge, while the biofilm played the major role in denitrification. The interaction of
the biofilm and the suspended sludge in the same reactor resulted in a better overall nitrogen removal performance with simultaneous
nitrification and denitrification. However, N2O emission was the main end product of nitrogen removal for the hybrid system; while
it was N2 for the biofilm. The relative low N2O emissions from the pure biofilm and the pure suspended sludge corresponded to the

In anaerobic digestion, the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) can be beneficial or harmful to the overall process, depending on the concentration of accumulated acids. Therefore, the accurate determination of the SCFA concentration in both fresh and stored sludge hydrolysates is important. To select a suitable method for monitoring SCFAs during the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, the accuracy of three available analytical methods, including 5 pH point acid titration (TITRA5), gas chromatography (GC), and spectrophotometry, were compared in the present study. The results revealed that TITRA5 and GC displayed better agreement in the achieved measurements and higher precision and accuracy than the spectrophotometric assay, as supported by the application of different statistical models. TITRA5 excelled in titrating unfiltered hydrolysate while simultaneously measuring the alkalinity, whereas the GC method provided detailed information on the contribution of different fatty acids to the total acidity. In contrast, the spectrophotometric assay suffered from many forms of interference, depending on the sample's matrix. SCFA production followed the pattern of enzymatic reactions and fitted the Michaelis-Menten model. In addition to promoting TITRA5 as an accurate and robust analytical tool for routine SCFA analyses, this comparative study also demonstrated the possibility of storing hydrolysate samples at different temperatures and durations without altering the SCFA measurements. 相似文献

Nitroglycerine (NG) and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) are propellants often found in soil and groundwater at military firing ranges. Because of the need for training with live ammunition, control or cleanup of these contaminants may be necessary for the continued use of these firing ranges. One inexpensive approach for managing sites exposed to these contaminants is the use phytoremedation, particularly using common or native grasses. In this study, the uptake of NG and 2,4-DNT from water by three common grasses, yellow nutsedge (Cyperus escalantus), yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca), and common rush (Juncus effusus), was investigated using hydroponic reactors. Rapid removal from solution by all grasses was observed, with yellow nutsedge removal rates being the highest. NG or 2,4-DNT accumulated in the tissues in all of the plants, except yellow foxtail did not accumulate NG. Higher concentrations were observed in killed roots, demonstrating the presence of plant-based enzymes actively transforming the contaminants. Yellow nutsedge was also grown in 2,4-DNT spiked soil. Significant uptake into the plants roots and leaves was observed and concentrations in the soil decreased rapidly, although 2,4-DNT concentration also decreased in the unplanted controls. In summary, the three grasses tested appear to be good candidates for phytoremediation of propellant contamination. 相似文献

Geospatial analysis and statistical analysis are coupled in this study to determine the dynamic linkage between landscape characteristics and water quality for the years 1996, 2002, and 2007 in a subtropical coastal watershed of Southeast China. The landscape characteristics include Percent of Built (%BL), Percent of Agriculture, Percent of Natural, Patch Density and Shannon’s Diversity Index (SHDI), with water quality expressed in terms of CODMn and NH4 +–N. The %BL was consistently positively correlated with NH4 +–N and CODMn at time three points. SHDI is significantly positively correlated with CODMn in 2002. The relationship between NH4 +–N, CODMn and landscape variables in the wet precipitation year 2007 is stronger, with R2 = 0.892, than that in the dry precipitation years 1996 and 2002, which had R2 values of 0.712 and 0.455, respectively. Two empirical regression models constructed in this study proved more suitable for predicting CODMn than for predicting NH4 +–N concentration in the unmonitored watersheds that do not have wastewater treatment plants. The calibrated regression equations have a better predictive ability over space within the wet precipitation year of 2007 than over time during the dry precipitation years from 1996 to 2002. Results show clearly that climatic variability influences the linkage of water quality-landscape characteristics and the fit of empirical regression models. 相似文献
