ABSTRACT We hypothesized that sediment from small watersheds with uniform bedrock and a single vegetative community would have uniform chemical characteristics for the sand and fine (silt and clay) size fractions. Channel sediment was collected from three vegetative communities (spruce-fir, mixed conifer, and Ponderosa pine), each on four bedrock types (basalt, limestone, sandstone, and granite), and analyzed for digestable Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn; total N and P; extractable Ca, Mg, K; cation exchange capacity; and organic matter. With the exception of organic matter content in the sand size fraction, either vegetation, bedrock, or their interaction were significant in explaining the observed variation for all analyses in both size fractions. Replicate studies of sites with similar bedrock and vegetation combinations are needed to determine if each watershed has similar or unique sediment chemistry. 相似文献

The impact of interactions between the earthworms Eisenia foetida and Lumbricus terrestris and the plants Cucurbita pepo and Cucurbita maxima on the uptake of weathered p,p'-DDE from soil was determined. Although some combinations of earthworm and plant species caused significant changes in the p,p'-DDE burden in both organisms, the effects were species specific. Contaminant bioconcentration in C. pepo was increased slightly by E. foetida and by 3-fold when the plant was grown with L. terrestris. E. foetida had no effect on the contaminant BCF by C. maxima, but L. terrestris caused a 2-fold reduction in p,p'-DDE uptake by the plant. Contaminant levels in E. foetida and L. terrestris were unaffected by C. pepo. When grown with C. maxima, the concentration of p,p'-DDE decreased by approximately 4-fold and 7-fold in E. foetida and L. terrestris, respectively. The data suggest that the prediction of contaminant bioavailability should consider interactions among species. 相似文献

The distillation of acidified coal tars for up to 50 years has given rise to a phenol plume approximately 500 m long, 50 m deep and containing up to 15 g l(-1) dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the Triassic Sandstones aquifer. A conceptual biogeochemical model based on chemical and microbiological analysis of groundwater samples has been developed as a preliminary to more detailed studies of the controls on natural attenuation. While the development of redox zones and the production of methane and carbon dioxide provide evidence of natural attenuation, it appears that degradation is slow. The existence of sulphate in the plume indicates that this electron acceptor has not been depleted and that consequently methanogenesis is probably limited. Based on a simple estimate of sulphate input concentration, a half-life of about 15 years has been estimated for sulphate reduction. Geochemical modelling predicts that increased alkalinity within the plume has not led to carbonate precipitation, and thus within the limits of accuracy of the measurement, alkalinity may reflect the degree of biodegradation. This implies a loss of around 18% of the DOC over a 30-year period. Despite limited degradation, microbial studies show that there are diverse microbial communities in the aquifer with the potential for both anaerobic and aerobic biodegradation. Microbial activity was found to be greatest at the leading edge of the plume where DOC concentrations are 60 mg l(-1) or less, but activity could still be observed in more contaminated samples even though cells could not be cultured. The study suggests that degradation may be limited by the high phenol concentrations within the core of the plume, but that once diluted by dispersion, natural attenuation may proceed. This study examined the accumulation of aluminium (Al) by the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis at neutral pH, when most Al would be predicted to be in an insoluble form (Al(OH)(3)). Snails were exposed to a range of Al concentrations (38-285 microg l(-1)) for 30 days, followed by 20 days in clean water. Aluminium was measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Significant accumulation of Al occurred in the whole soft tissues, gut, digestive gland and kidney at the latest by day 10. High concentration factors were observed, ranging from 4.5 x 10(3) in the whole soft tissues to 6.3 x 10(4) in the kidney, corresponding to actual concentrations of 800 to 7500 microg g(-1), respectively. Proportionality between environmental (water) and tissue concentrations of Al was observed in the gut but not in the other tissues. Following transfer to clean water, rapid loss of Al from the whole soft tissues and gut was seen over the first 10 days. Loss of Al from the digestive gland was much less as a proportion of the total, with approximately 90% of the Al remaining in the tissue. In contrast, significant loss of Al from the kidney occurred between days 20 and 30, even in the continued presence of Al; little further loss occurred following transfer to clean water. Aluminium is clearly available to the snail at neutral pH, the most likely route of entry being the gut. This could facilitate entry of the metal into the food chain. The possible roles of the digestive gland and kidney in the handling of Al are discussed. 相似文献

Extensive forest fires occurred in northern Alberta, Canada, in 1998. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were studied following these forest fires in order to explore natural and anthropogenic influences on the affected forest fire area. Specifically, concentrations and profiles of these compounds were determined in sediment samples. A predominance of alkylated PAH derivatives over parent PAHs were observed at the burned and reference sites. Naturally dervied PAHs were abundant at all sites. A high proportion and concentration of retene was observed at the totally burned site and indicates some inputs from forest fires. Very low concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were observed at all sites, and the profiles were very similar. This likely reflects common atmospheric contributing sources to the study area. 相似文献

Irruptive population dynamics appear to be widespread in large herbivore populations, but there are few empirical examples from long time series with small measurement error and minimal harvests. We analyzed an 89-year time series of counts and known removals for pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in Yellowstone National Park of the western United States during 1918-2006 using a suite of density-dependent, density-independent, and irruptive models to determine if the population exhibited irruptive dynamics. Information-theoretic model comparison techniques strongly supported irruptive population dynamics (Leopold model) and density dependence during 1918-1946, with the growth rate slowing after counts exceeded 600 animals. Concerns about sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) degradation led to removals of >1100 pronghorn during 1947-1966, and counts decreased from approximately 700 to 150. The best models for this period (Gompertz, Ricker) suggested that culls replaced intrinsic density-dependent mechanisms. Contrary to expectations, the population did not exhibit enhanced demographic vigor soon after the termination of the harvest program, with counts remaining between 100 and 190 animals during 1967 1981. However, the population irrupted (Caughley model with a one-year lag) to a peak abundance of approximately 600 pronghorn during 1982-1991, with a slowing in growth rate as counts exceeded 500. Numbers crashed to 235 pronghorn during 1992-1995, perhaps because important food resources (e.g., sagebrush) on the winter range were severely diminished by high densities of browsing elk, mule deer, and pronghorn. Pronghorn numbers remained relatively constant during 1996-2006, at a level (196-235) lower than peak abundance, but higher than numbers following the release from culling. The dynamics of this population supported the paradigm that irruption is a fundamental pattern of growth in many populations of large herbivores with high fecundity and delayed density-dependent effects on recruitment when forage and weather conditions become favorable after range expansion or release from harvesting. Incorporating known removals into population models that can describe a wide range of dynamics can greatly improve our interpretation of observed dynamics in intensively managed populations. 相似文献

Badgers are carnivores that show considerable variation in their social and spatial organization. At the westernmost part of their range, in Britain and Ireland, variation in spatial organization appears to be determined by the availability of resources. However, the majority of studies has focussed at one end of the social/spatial spectrum, where population densities are high and adjacent territories are contiguous and non-overlapping. To examine whether the same limiting factors appear to apply across a wider range of badger densities, we established a study site in a predominantly coniferous habitat within an upland area of northeast England, where population densities were predicted to be low. Seasonal home ranges of individual badgers were largest in autumn, followed by summer and spring, then winter. This pattern is reflective of the likely seasonal changes in food availability within the area, as opposed to being related to breeding patterns. There were also significant correlations between territory size and the number of grassland patches (positive) and the proportion of grassland (negative), which are consistent with predictions from the Resource Dispersion Hypothesis. Although badgers at the site were living at low to moderate densities relative to many other studied populations in Britain, they showed patterns of spatial organization that were close to those of high-density populations. The nature of the relationship between resource availability and abundance patterns is likely to have important consequences for the conservation and management of badgers and other species that show flexible spatial organization. 相似文献
