One potential trade-off that bold individuals face is between increased predation risks and gains in resources. Individuals experiencing high predation and hungry individuals (or individuals with low body condition) are predicted to show increased boldness. We examined one behavioral trait previously reported to be associated with boldness (the time individual fish needed to emerge from shelter) in various populations of mollies (Poecilia spp.). Our study system included several southern Mexican surface streams with high piscine predation and high food availability, sulfidic surface streams with high avian predation, in which the inhabiting fish show reduced body condition, and a sulfidic cave, where predation and body condition are low. Our comparison revealed very short times to emerge from the start box in populations from non-sulfidic streams. In sulfidic habitats (whether surface or cave), it took individual Poecilia mexicana considerably longer to emerge from the start box, and the same difference was also found in an independent comparison between P. mexicana and the closely related, highly sulfide-adapted Poecilia sulphuraria. Fish reared under common garden conditions (in the absence of predators and hydrogen sulfide) showed intermediate boldness scores to the extremes observed in the field. Our data thus indicate that (a) boldness is shaped by environmental conditions/experiential effects, but is not heritable, (b) predation affects boldness in the predicted direction, but (c) low body condition leads to reduced boldness. Extremophile Poecilia spp. spend most of their time surfacing to survive under sulfidic and hypoxic conditions, which exposes them to increased levels of predations, but the fish forage on the bottom. Hence, in this system, increased boldness does not increase foraging success. We argue that energy limitation favors reducing energetically costly behaviors, and exploring novel environments may be just one of them.  相似文献

Using a biopsy dart system, samples of skin tissue were collected from southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in 1995 on two wintering grounds, southwest Australia (n = 20) and the Auckland Islands of New Zealand (n = 20); and on offshore feeding grounds at Latitudes 40 to 43°, south of Western Australia (n = 5). A variable section of the mitochondrial DNA control-region (289 nucleotides) was amplified and sequenced from these 45 individuals (21 males, 20 females and 4 of unknown sex), distinguishing a total of seven unique sequences (i.e. mtDNA haplotypes). Two haplotypes were found on both wintering grounds (including a common type representing 45% of each sample), and five types were unique to only one wintering ground. An analysis of variance adapted for molecular information revealed significant genetic differentiation between the two wintering grounds (p = 0.017). The feeding-ground sample was too small for statistical comparison with the wintering grounds, but included two haplotypes found only in the Auckland Islands as well as the common haplotype found on both wintering grounds. The nucleotide diversity and differentiation of mtDNA among the right whales was similar to that among humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) from the same regions (Baker et al. 1998), but haplotype diversity was significantly reduced, perhaps as a result of more intensive hunting during the last century and continued illegal hunting during this century. A topic of interest in the finance world is measuring systematic risk. Accurately measuring the systematic risk component—or Beta—of an asset or portfolio is important in many financial applications. In this work, we consider the efficiency of a range of Beta estimation methods commonly used in practice from a reference-day risk perspective. We show that, when using the industry standard data sample of 5 years of monthly returns, the choice of reference-day used to calculate underlying returns has a significant impact on all of the Beta estimation methods considered. Driven by this finding, we propose and test an alternative nonparametric bootstrap approach for calculating Beta estimates which is unaffected by reference-day risk. Our primary goal is to determine a point-estimate of Beta, independent of reference-day.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterize the microbial community in ground pork using molecular approaches. Forty six ground pork products were purchased from local stores in the north central area of South Korea. Aerobic plate counts varied 4.23 ± 5.14 × 105 CFU/g with the range between 5.00 × 103 and 1.85 × 106 CFU/g for ground pork samples. Four ground meat samples were further processed for metagenomic analysis. Pseudomonas species was the most relative abundant with a wide range occurring (1.72 to 77.7%) as part of the microbial genera in ground pork. Bacteria such as Carnobacterium, Yersinia, Photobacterium were also identified in ground pork. Despite the prominence of certain genera across all samples there was still extensive microbial diversity among ground pork products that originated from different slaughter houses and were processed in different markets. Such diversity indicates that designing interventions to extend shelf life may be hampered by the extensive variability in the microbial consortia associated with pork products. However, this diversity may be useful for developing microbial traceability signatures unique to a slaughter house or a particular market.  相似文献

自20世纪中叶以来,五大湖区的水生食物网就已受到多氯联苯化合物(PCBs)的污染。对于长寿命鱼类,如湖鲟(Acipenser fulvescens),由于缺乏该物种的相对敏感性信息,一直无法确定其PCB暴露的风险。本文的研究目标就是评估湖鲟早期生命阶段对3,3''4,4''5-五氯联苯(PCB-126)或2,3,7,8-四氯二苯并-p-二恶英(TCDD)暴露的敏感性。死亡率、生长、形态和组织病理学、游泳能力和活动水平都被用作评估终点。心包和卵黄囊水肿、管状心脏、卵黄囊出血和体长较小是TCDD和PCB-126暴露中最常见的病理症状,早在受精4 d后就开始出现,其中许多的病理都以一种剂量依赖的方式发生。湖鲟体内PCB-126和TCDD的半致死剂量分别为5.4 ng/g egg(95%置信区间,3.9-7.4 ng/g egg)和0.61 ng/g egg (0.47-0.82 ng/g egg)。由此产生的PCB-126的相对强度因子(0.11)远大于世界卫生组织对鱼的估计值(毒性当量因子=0.005),这表明目前的风险评估可能低估了PCB对湖鲟的毒性。在受精60 d后,从半致死剂量中幸存的湖鲟的游泳活性和耐力均有所下降。阈值和半数效应毒性值表明,与在北美发现的另一种鲟鱼属Scaphirhynchu相比,湖鲟对PCB和TCDD更为敏感。事实上,在大湖区和其他地方的湖鲟种群都容易受到PCB/ TCDD诱导,使胚胎发育受到影响,游泳能力下降。

EU Directives stipulate that PM10 should be measured using the gravimetric reference method as laid out in EN12341 [CEN, 1998. Air Quality – Determination of the PM10 Fraction of Suspended Particulate Matter – Reference Method and Field Test Procedure to Demonstrate Reference Equivalence of Measurement Methods. European Committee for Standardisation], or an equivalent method as demonstrated using EC guidance [EC, 2005. Demonstration of Equivalence of Ambient Air Monitoring Methods. European Commission Working Group on Guidance for the Demonstration of Equivalence]. There is however a conflict between the requirement to measure PM10 using the gravimetric reference method and the need for rapid public reporting, and many member states, including the UK, rely on non-gravimetric techniques to measure PM10. In the UK the majority of PM10 measurements are made using the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM), which does not meet the equivalence criteria [Harrison, D., 2006. UK Equivalence Programme for Monitoring of Particulate Matter. Defra, London]. The implied need to upgrade or replace TEOMs with an equivalent automated measurement technique has significant cost implications. The model described in this paper was based on analysis of daily mean measurements of PM10 by the Filter Dynamics Measurement System (FDMS) and the TEOM at UK sites. It uses the FDMS measurement of the volatile component of PM10 (referred to here as FDMS purge) to correct for differences in the sensitivity to volatile PM10 between the TEOM and the EU gravimetric reference method. The model equation for the correction of TEOM PM10 measurements is: TEOMVCM = TEOM ? 1.87 FDMS purge due to the regional homogeneity of volatile PM, the FDMS purge concentration may be measured at a site distant to the TEOM, allowing the possibility of using a single FDMS instrument to correct PM10 measurements made by several TEOMs in a defined geographical area. The model was assessed against the criteria for the EC Working Group's Guidance for the Demonstration of Equivalence of Ambient Air Monitoring Methods [EC, 2005. Demonstration of Equivalence of Ambient Air Monitoring Methods. European Commission Working Group on Guidance for the Demonstration of Equivalence]. The model satisfies the equivalence criteria using remote FDMS purge measurements for distances up to 200 km (in 22 out of 23 data sets). These data provide strong evidence that the model is a viable tool for correcting measurements from TEOM instruments on the national and local government networks.  相似文献

Repeated cutting of vegetation at or near ground level in power-line corridors is a common practice for inhibiting tree growth and regeneration. However, few data exist on long-term community responses. In this study, we sampled 20 northern Kentucky power-line corridors and compared their seedling and sapling communities to the edges and interiors of adjacent undisturbed forests. Mean seedling and sapling density in corridors was roughly twice that of adjacent undisturbed forest interiors, suggesting that repeated cutting is not a viable method of inhibiting tree regeneration. Corridor communities were dominated byRobinia pseudoacacia (black locust) andFraxinus americana (white ash), but ordinations indicated strong similaritties among communities in corridors and adjacent forests. Many of the tree species found in adjacent forests, with the exception of a few shade-tolerant species, had highest seedling and sapling densities in corridors. Stump or root sprouting by many species appears to regenerate forests quickly after cutting. However, disturbed soil and detritus accumulations caused by management crews and their equipment may also create a large variety of microsites for seedling establishment. Because repeated cutting selects for dominance by species with highest sprout growth rates, it should not be used as the sole management technique. It may instead be used to alter the vigor, stature, and stored reserves of trees so that herbicides or other methods of tree control can be used more efficiently.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: This paper details the increasing tendency to overdevelop lands adjacent to public reservoirs. The impact on water quality of the pollutant load carried in surface runoff from developed lands is described as well as the depreciation in recreational experience due to loss of scenic horizons. The case study, Spruce Run Reservoir in Clinton, New Jersey, included population and demand projections. Land speculation and proposed development are evaluated on a physical constraint basis.
