Two iodometric methods for the concentration and analysis of water samples containing organic oxidants were applied to rivers and wastewaters in Illinois, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Oxidant concentrations detected were as high as 2.5 § 10−5 M; the methods were capable of detecting as little as 10−8 M. A spatially implemented model designed to assist the identification of optimal countermeasure strategies for radioactively contaminated regions is described. Collective and individual ingestion doses for people within the affected area are estimated together with collective exported ingestion dose. A range of countermeasures are incorporated within the model, and environmental restrictions have been included as appropriate. The model evaluates the effectiveness of a given combination of countermeasures through a cost function which balances the benefit obtained through the reduction in dose with the cost of implementation. The optimal countermeasure strategy is the combination of individual countermeasures (and when and where they are implemented) which gives the lowest value of the cost function. The model outputs should not be considered as definitive solutions, rather as interactive inputs to the decision making process. As a demonstration the model has been applied to a hypothetical scenario in Cumbria (UK). This scenario considered a published nuclear power plant accident scenario with a total deposition of 1.7x10(14), 1.2x10(13), 2.8x10(10) and 5.3x10(9)Bq for Cs-137, Sr-90, Pu-239/240 and Am-241, respectively. The model predicts that if no remediation measures were implemented the resulting collective dose would be approximately 36 000 person-Sv (predominantly from 137Cs) over a 10-year period post-deposition. The optimal countermeasure strategy is predicted to avert approximately 33 000 person-Sv at a cost of approximately 160 million pounds. The optimal strategy comprises a mixture of ploughing, AFCF (ammonium-ferric hexacyano-ferrate) administration, potassium fertiliser application, clean feeding of livestock and food restrictions. The temperate forests of the southern hemisphere are the most likely forests to be affected by increased levels of ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation resulting from reduced ozone. The review describes these forests and then discusses the morphological changes, physiological effects, and protection mechanisms, particularly UV absorbing compounds that result from present day and increasing UVB radiation. Bacterial productivity in sandy sediments on reef flats at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef was determined from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. The study was conducted during January 1982 and July 1983. A small diurnal increase occurred in sediments having a dense population of microalgae. Bacterial production was 120 to 370 mg C m-2 d-1 in summer on reef flats, which was equivalent to 30–40% of primary production by benthic microalgae. In winter, rates of primary production by benthic microalgae and secondary production by bacteria were about one-half to one-fifth of those in summer. There was much variation in production, due to patchiness in the distribution of benthic microbes, especially microalgae. Doubling times for the bacteria in surface sediment were 1 to 2 d in summer and 4 to 16 d in winter on the reef flats. These high productivity values for bacteria indicated that a net input of organic matter to the sediment was needed to support the growth of bacteria. Sediment bacteria thus have a very important role in transforming organic matter on the reef flats. Grazing by Holothuria atra depressed both primary production and bacterial production. It was estimated that these holothurians ate about 10 to 40% of bacterial carbon produced each day in summer, and thus have an important role in the carbon cycle. Harpacticoid copepods were numerically important components of the benthic meiofaunal community and probably had a significant impact on bacterial density as grazers. 相似文献

Although estrous synchrony has been reported in a number of mammalian species, most often among primates, methodological and
analytical problems make it difficult to interpret these results. We developed a novel estrous synchrony index and employed
a randomization procedure to analyze long-term observations of female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) estrous cycles at the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. Our results revealed that female chimpanzees at Mahale avoid
synchronizing their estrous periods with each other. We also found that birthrates decreased as the breeding sex ratio increased.
We suggest that estrous asynchrony decreases female–female competition for mates. Asynchrony may also reduce the potential
for male sexual coercion by nonpreferred mating partners. 相似文献

Many non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) are expected to spread at the air-water interface, particularly under non-equilibrium conditions. In the vadose zone, this spreading should increase the surface area for mass transfer and the efficiency of volatile NAPL recovery by soil vapor extraction (SVE). Observations of spreading on water wet surfaces led to a conceptual model of oil spreading vertically above a NAPL pool in the vadose zone. Analysis of this model predicts that spreading can enhance the SVE contaminant recovery compared to conditions where the liquid does not spread. Experiments were conducted with spreading volatile oils hexane and heptane in wet porous media and capillary tubes, where spreading was observed at the scale of centimeters. Within porous medium columns up to a meter in height containing stagnant gas, spreading was less than ten centimeters and did not contribute significantly to hexane volatilization. Water film thinning and oil film pinning may have prevented significant oil film spreading, and thus did not enhance SVE at the scale of a meter. The experiments performed indicate that volatile oil spreading at the field scale is unlikely to contribute significantly to the efficiency of SVE. 相似文献

Expatriate health care professionals frequently participate in international responses to natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies. This field of practice presents important clinical, logistical and ethical challenges for clinicians. This paper considers the ethics of health care practice in humanitarian contexts. It examines features that contribute to forming the moral landscape of humanitarian work, and discusses normative guidelines and approaches that are relevant for this work. These tools and frameworks provide important ethics resources for humanitarian settings. Finally, it elaborates a set of questions that can aid health care professionals as they analyse ethical issues that they experience in the field. The proposed process can assist clinicians as they seek to establish their moral bearings in situations of ethical complexity and uncertainty. Identifying and developing ethics resources and vocabulary for clinical practice in humanitarian work will help health care professionals provide ethically sound care to patients and communities. 相似文献

We examined the taxonomic resolution of zooplankton data required to identify ocean basin scale biogeographic zonation in
the Southern Ocean. A 2,154 km transect was completed south of Australia. Sea surface temperature (SST) measured at 1 min
intervals showed that seven physical zones were sampled. Zooplankton were collected at a spatial resolution of ~9.2 km with
a continuous plankton recorder, identified to the highest possible taxonomic resolution and enumerated. Zooplankton assemblage
similarity between samples was calculated using the Bray–Curtis index for the taxonomic levels of species, genus, family,
order and class after first log10(x + 1) (LA) and then presence/absence (PA) transformation of abundance data. Although within and between zone sample similarity
increased with decreasing taxonomic resolution, for both data transformations, cluster analysis demonstrated that the biogeographic
separation of zones remained at all taxonomic levels when using LA data. ANOSIM confirmed this, detecting significant differences
in zooplankton assemblage structure between all seven a priori determined physical zones for all taxonomic levels when using
the LA data. In the case of the PA data for the complete data set, and both LA and PA data for a crustacean only data set,
no significant differences were detected between zooplankton assemblages in the Polar frontal zone (PFZ) and inter-PFZ at
any taxonomic level. Loss of information at resolutions below the species level, particularly in the PA data, prevented the
separation of some zones. However, the majority of physical zones were biogeographically distinct from species level to class
using both LA and PA transformations. Significant relationships between SST and zooplankton community structure, summarised
as NMDS scores, at all taxonomic levels, for both LA and PA transformations, and complete and crustacean only data sets, highlighted
the biogeographic relevance of low resolution taxonomic data. The retention of biogeographic information in low taxonomic
resolution data shows that data sets collected with different taxonomic resolutions may be meaningfully merged for the post
hoc generation of Southern Ocean time series. 相似文献

A central question in the study of predator–prey relationships is to what extent prey behaviour is determined by avoidance
of predators. Here, we test whether the long-term risk of encountering lions and the presence of lions in the vicinity influence
the behaviour of large African herbivores at waterholes through avoidance of high-risk areas, increases in group size, changes
in temporal niche or changes in the time spent in waterhole areas. In Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, we monitored waterholes
to study the behaviour of nine herbivore species under different risks of encountering lions. We radio-collared 26 lions in
the study area which provided the opportunity to monitor whether lions were present during observation sessions and to map
longer-term seasonal landscapes of risk of encountering lions. Our results show that the preferred prey species for lions
(buffalo, kudu and giraffe) avoided risky waterholes. Group size increased as encounter risk increased for only two species
(wildebeest and zebra), but this effect was not strong. Interestingly, buffalo avoided the hours of the day which are dangerous
when the long-term and short-term risks of encountering lions were high, and all species showed avoidance of waterhole use
at night times when lions were in the vicinity. This illustrates well how prey can make temporal adjustments to avoid dangerous
periods coinciding with predator hunting. Additionally, many herbivores spent more time accessing water to drink when the
long- and short-term risks of encountering lions were high, and they showed longer potential drinking time when the long-term
risk of encountering lions was high, suggesting higher levels of vigilance. This study illustrates the diversity of behavioural
adjustments to the risk of encountering a predator and how prey respond differently to temporal variations in this risk. 相似文献

Recruitment patterns of marine invertebrates are affected both by settlement and early post-settlement events. This study
examined the settlement and recruitment patterns of echinoderms at three sites in the rocky subtidal zone of Bocabec Cove,
Bay of Fundy, Canada using artificial turf collectors and quadrats on the natural substrate. Potential predators were quantified
at two of the sites along transects and in 1-m2 quadrats. Both potential predators and competitors were quantified in 0.0625-m2 quadrats. Settlement varied across sites (1.5–3 km apart) and two years of sampling (2004, 2005). The site of most potential
settlement differed for the three groups of echinoderms: sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis), sea stars (Asterias spp.) and sea cucumber (Psolus fabricii). Settlement densities on the artificial turf collectors tended to be greater than the densities of settlers on the natural
substrate. On the natural substrate, the only significant difference between densities of juveniles over time was that newly
settled sea stars were found in July and were not found the following October. Large lobsters and carnivorous worms were potential
predators with densities that varied between sites. Potential competitors that differed in abundance between sites were herbivorous
gastropods and conspecifics for sea urchins; and carnivorous worms for sea stars. This study suggests that patterns of recruitment
are either set up by patterns of settlement or by events during the first few weeks/months on the benthic substrate for these
