The remediation of groundwater contaminated with waterborne pathogens, in particular with viruses, is based on their probable or actual ability to be transported from the source of origin to a point of withdrawal while maintaining the capacity to cause infections. The transport is often associated with both the unsaturated and saturated subsurface composed of varying geological settings with commensurate hydrogeological variability. Included among the most important hydrogeological factors that can be used to evaluate viral transport are the flux of moisture in the unsaturated zone, the media through which the particles travel, the length of the flow path, and the time of travel. With respect to the movement and inactivation of viruses in the subsurface, the vadose zone can provide an effective barrier for movement into groundwater and for the protection of downgradient points of withdrawal and use. Models developed to predicate viral transport in soil and groundwater are introduced, including screening models and more sophisticated predictive numerical models. As evidenced by the exponential growth of virus transport research in the literature, as well as a continuing interest in human health, the subject will continue to be one of critical importance to professionals active in the development, treatment, and conveyance of groundwater in the future. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

The 1984 amendments by Congress to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) resulted primarily from a sense of frustration with EPA's apparent lack of progress in addressing the myriad problems associated with hazardous waste management. The amendments were also a manifestation of Congress’ clear sense of purpose in wanting to steer a radically different course at much greater speed. Whether this bold experiment works remains to be seen. EPA appears to be committed to carrying out both the letter and spirit of the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments of 1984, but no one should underestimate the magnitude of the task. 相似文献

Maternal serum levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin and its subunits (intact, α, and free βhCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) were measured in 279 women between 8 and 14 weeks' gestation. This group included 23 pregnancies in which the fetus had Down syndrome (DS), diagnosed either at birth or during the second trimester (n=17) or from chorionic villus sampling (CVS) (n=6). Normal medians were determined from the 258 apparently normal pregnancies. The median levels of intact hCG (1·4 MOM) and free βhCG (2·1 MOM) were significantly raised, whereas the median level of PAPP-A (0·39 MOM) was significantly lower in the DS pregnancies when compared with the control group. Levels of αhCG were similar in both the control and the DS pregnancies. Analysis of samples taken prior to 14 weeks' gestation demonstrated that only PAPP-A (0·34 MOM) was significantly altered in DS pregnancies. However, after the exclusion of DS cases diagnosed at CVS, the median intact hCG (1·56 MOM), free βhCG (2·27 MOM), and αhCG (1·8 MOM) were all raised in DS pregnancies. DOI: 10.1111/j.1752‐1688.2011.00554.x Abstract: This paper reviews New Zealand’s National Rivers Water Quality Network (NRWQN), which is now in its third decade of monitoring. The NRWQN is noteworthy for being operationally stable throughout its history, and the resulting consistency is increasingly valuable for detecting water quality trends and for “anchoring” temporary special purpose monitoring campaigns. The NRWQN was carefully designed following considerable effort to learn from monitoring experiences elsewhere. Monthly visits are made to 77 sites (all near hydrometric stations) on 35 river systems that cumulatively drain about one half of the national landscape. “Core” (routinely measured) variables are: conductivity, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, visual clarity, turbidity, colored dissolved organic matter, fecal indicator bacteria, and different forms of nitrogen and phosphorus (italics indicate field measurements). Associated benthic biological monitoring comprises monthly visual assessment of periphyton and annual sampling for macro‐invertebrates. We overview the conception, design, initiation, and operational history of the NRWQN, and highlight the diverse applications of its datasets including numerous scientific applications, national‐scale modeling of material fluxes, and state‐of‐environment reporting and practical water management at both regional and national scale. Chironomids may adapt to pollution stress but data are confined to species that can be reared in the laboratory. A microcosm approach was used to test for adaptation and species differences in heavy metal tolerance. In one experiment, microcosms containing different levels of contaminants were placed in polluted and reference locations. The response of Chironomus februarius to metal contaminants suggested local adaptation: relatively more flies emerged from clean sediment at the reference site and the reverse pattern occurred at the polluted site. However, maternal effects were not specifically ruled out. In another species, Kiefferulus intertinctus, there was no evidence for adaptation. In a second experiment, microcosms with different contaminant levels were placed at two polluted and two unpolluted sites. Species responded differently to contaminants, but there was no evidence for adaptation in the species where this could be tested. Adaptation to heavy metals may be uncommon and species specific, but more sensitive species need to be tested across a range of pollution levels. Factors influencing the likelihood of adaptation are briefly discussed. 相似文献

We sought to determine whether common intertidal and shallow subtidal zone grazers would consume extracts or fronds of three invasive Caulerpa spp., all of which are now resident in southern New South Wales, Australia. We examined the responses of herbivorous fishes, echinoderms and molluscs to C. filiformis. A subset of these organisms was tested with extracts of C. scalpelliformis and C. taxifolia. Polar (seawater) extracts of C. filiformis deterred a single herbivore, Aplysia sydneyensis, but confirmed that the biological activity reported from some Caulerpa spp. is not restricted to the lipophilic fractions. The large turbinid Turbo torquatus was deterred by an ethanol extract of C. filiformis, while the small congener T. undulatus demonstrated a significant preference for palatable agar discs containing ethanol extracts of C. filiformis. However, when T. undulatus were offered a choice of fronds from five algal species in the laboratory, they readily consumed Ulva spp. and Sargassum sp., showing the lowest preference for C. filiformis. Solvent extracts of C. scalpelliformis and C. taxifolia did not significantly deter any grazers. However, the overall trend was for reduced consumption of discs containing solvent extracts of these seaweeds. Indeed, for the large urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii and in the fish trials these effects were very near significant (P<0.06). We conclude that common herbivores associated with hard substrata are highly unlikely to intercede in the spread or control of these invasive algae.Communicated by M.S. Johnson, Crawley 相似文献

Sexual and asexual reproduction of the fissiparous starfish Allostichaster capensis were examined for 24 months at Bahía Kaiser, Golfo Nuevo, Chubut, Argentina. Gonad indices revealed an annual reproductive cycle, with peak development occurring in late winter (August). Spawning occurred in spring (September). Pyloric caeca indices displayed a clear annual cycle and a reciprocal relationship with gonad indices, showing the storage function of pyloric caeca. The starfish population appears to be largely maintained by fission, as only two females were found. A. capensis also showed an annual cycle of fission, with the highest frequency in spring and summer (from November to January), just after spawning.
