In order to assess agricultural adaptation to climate impacts, new methodologies are needed. The translog distance function allows assessing interactions between different factors, and hence the influence of management on climate impacts. The Farm Accountancy Data Network provides extensive data on farm characteristics of farms throughout the EU15 (i.e. the 15 member states of the European Union before the extension in 2004). These data on farm inputs and outputs from 1990−2003 are coupled with climate data. As climate change is not the only change affecting European agriculture, we also include effects of subsidies and other changes on inputs and outputs of farms throughout Europe. We distinguish several regions and empirically assess (1) climate impacts on farm inputs and outputs in different regions and (2) interactions between inputs and other factors that contribute to the adaptation to these impacts. Changes in production can partly be related to climatic variability and change, but also subsidies and other developments (e.g. technology, markets) are important. Results show that impacts differ per region, and that ‘actual impacts’ cannot be explicitly separated into ‘potential impacts’ and ‘adaptive capacity’ as often proposed for vulnerability assessment. Farmers adapt their practices to prevailing conditions and continuously adapt to changing conditions. Therefore, ‘potential impacts’ will not be observed in practice, leaving it as a mainly theoretical concept. Factors that contribute to the adaptation also differ per region. In some regions more fertilizers or more irrigation can mitigate impacts, while in other regions this amplifies impacts. To project impacts of future climate change on agriculture, current farm management strategies and their influence on current production should be considered. This clearly asks for improved integration of biophysical and economic models.  相似文献

For the general population the intake of food of animal origin is the main route of human exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F). Besides this the ingestion of contaminated soil might be an important exposure path for small children. For risk assessment the knowledge of the bioavailable fraction of soil bound contaminants is important. In a balance study with young Goettingen minipigs the oral bioavailability of PCDD/F from contaminated soil was estimated by determination of the retention of PCDD/F from soil in different organs and tissues. Relative bioavailability was estimated by comparing the retention from soil to the retention of PCDD/F in organs and tissues after oral administration of a PCDD/F mixture extracted from the same soil by solvent. The soil had a PCDD/F-contamination of 5.3 microg I-TEq/kg and originated from a former arable land that had been treated with sludge from the port of Hamburg some years ago. Two groups of each four animals were exposed daily for 28 days via their diet either to 0.5 g soil per kg body weight and day (2.63 ng I-TEq/(kg(bw).d)) or to a daily dose of 1.58 ng I-TEq/(kg(bw).d) given to the diet by solvent. Five unexposed animals were used as a control group. Liver, adipose tissue, muscle, brain and blood were analyzed for their PCDD/F content. Accumulation of PCDD/F from soil or solvent in comparison to control animals was only observed for congeners with 2378-chlorosubstitution and predominantly took place in the liver. Bioavailability of 2378-chlorosubstituted congeners was in the range of 0.64%-21.9% (mean: 10.1%) from soil and 2.8%-59.8% (mean: 31.5%) when administered by solvent. The soil matrix reduced the bioavailability by about 70%. Expressed as I-TEq only 13.8% of the PCDD/F contamination were bioavailable from soil. The relative bioavailability of 2378-chlorosubstituted congeners from soil in relation to administration by solvent was in the range of 2%-42.2% (mean: 28.4%). When not considering the bioavailability, the risk by oral uptake of PCDD/F contaminated soil might be overestimated.  相似文献

Titania supported vanadium oxide is a renowned catalyst for the abatement of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) from gas effluents. To develop more active formulations, researchers mainly rely on lab-scale experiments on “PCDD/Fs-mimicking substances”, like (chloro)-benzene. Using such model compounds is convenient whereas handling PCDD/Fs in the laboratory is potentially hazardous and complicated. Recent studies, however, challenged some foremost conclusions of model compound based studies, starting from the observation that different model compounds gave contrasted results. Thus the present work aims at confronting some of these dubious conclusions with direct experimental tests on PCDD/Fs. One reference V2O5/TiO2 catalyst and three modified formulations (V2O5/TiO2-SO4, V2O5-MoO3/TiO2, and V2O5-WO3/TiO2) have been evaluated. A dedicated apparatus was used which allows safe and reliable tests on a mixture of PCDD/Fs congeners. Some of the previously proposed catalyst improvement strategies actually prove to be disadvantageous in the removal of PCDD/Fs. In particular, MoO3- and WO3-modified catalysts were significantly less active than the reference catalyst. These observations show that conclusions from model compound based studies must be drawn with care and should ideally be confronted with tests on the actual target pollutants.  相似文献

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) has been combined with evolved gas analysis (EGA) with the purpose of simulating the thermal behaviour of filter dust samples under inert (desorption) and de novo test oxidising conditions. Emphasis is on studying de novo formation of dioxins, surrogates and precursors arising from filter dust derived from thermal processes, such as municipal solid waste incineration and metallurgy. A new method is tested for sampling and analysing dioxin surrogates and precursors in the TGA effluent, which are collected on sampling tubes; the adsorbed compounds are eventually desorbed and quantified by TD-GC-MS. The major sources of error and losses are considered, including potential sorbent artefacts, possible breakthrough of volatiles through sampling tubes, or eventual losses of semi-volatiles due to their incomplete desorption or re-condensation inside the TG Analyser. The method is optimised and validated for di- to hexa-chlorinated benzenes in a range of 10-1000ppb with average recovery exceeding 85%. The results are compared with data obtained in similar studies, performed by other research groups. As a result, the method provides the means for simulating de novo synthesis of dioxins in fly-ash and facilitates reliable and easy estimation of de novo activity, comparable with results of other studies, in combination with wide flexibility of testing conditions.  相似文献

Irradiation cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) and irradiation cross-linked polyethylene with carbon black filler (CB-PEX) are two types of scraps, generated in electric cable production. Their pyrolysis is studied in this work using instrumental TG\DSC\FTIR techniques and kinetic analysis. The experiments are performed at a constant heating rate of 10 °C/min in nitrogen flow at atmospheric pressure. It is found that the main pyrolysis stage is in the temperature range of 395–503 °C for PEX, and in range of 408–515 °C for CB-PEX. In the main pyrolysis stage, CB-PEX requires more external heat than PEX does. Olefins are the major products of pyrolysis for both materials, but they are quite different in their composition and molecular weight distribution. PEX can be converted almost quantitatively into volatile compounds. CB-PEX has a stronger coking tendency, as well as a larger residue composed of carbon black.  相似文献

Abstract

Transit traffic through the Austrian Alps is of major concern in government policy. Pollutant burdens resulting from such traffic are discussed widely in Austrian politics and have already led to measures to restrict traffic on transit routes. In the course of an environmental assessment study, comprehensive measurements were performed. These included air quality observations using passive samplers, a differential optical absorption spectroscopy system, a mobile and a fixed air quality monitoring station, and meteorological observations. As was evident from several previous studies, dispersion modeling in such areas of complex terrain and, moreover, with frequent calm wind conditions, is difficult to handle. Further, in the case presented here, different pollutant sources had to be treated simultaneously (e.g., road networks, exhaust chimneys from road tunnels, and road tunnel portals). No appropriate system for modeling all these factors has so far appeared in the literature. A prognostic wind field model coupled with a Lagrangian dispersion model is thus presented here and is designed to treat all these factors. A comparison of the modeling system with results from passive samplers and from a fixed air quality monitoring station proved the ability of the model to provide reasonable figures for concentration distributions along the A10.  相似文献

Increased nutrient loading threatens many freshwater ecosystems. Elevated temperatures may increase the sensitivity to eutrophication in these ecosystems. Higher concentrations of possibly toxic reduced nitrogen (NH x ) in the water layer may be expected as production and anaerobic breakdown rates will increase. Apart from temperature, NH x and its effect on aquatic macrophytes will also depend on pH and light. We examined the interactive effects of NH x , temperature, pH and light on Elodea canadensis in a full factorial laboratory experiment. Results demonstrate that high NH x and high temperature together with low pH and low light causes the strongest toxic effects regarding relative growth rate and leaf tissue mortality. The adverse effects of high temperature and low light are most likely caused by increased metabolic activity and reduced photosynthesis, respectively. Severe toxicity at low pH compared to high pH can be ascribed to the ability of E. canadensis to induce a specialised bicarbonate-concentrating pathway at high pH, resulting in much higher carbon availability, needed for detoxification of NH x . We conclude that NH x toxicity will become more pronounced under higher temperatures, but that effects on aquatic macrophytes will strongly depend on pH of the water layer and specific metabolic adaptations of different species.  相似文献
