Karst aquifers are characterized by spatial heterogeneity due to the presence of highly permeable channels and conduits in
low-permeable fractured rocks (matrix block). Recent studies have reported a close relationship between surface and subsurface
water in karstic regions due to the water flow through a complicated network of paths formed by fracture intersections. Subsurface
flow in karstified aquifers ranges between conduit flow, in large passages with relatively high flow velocities, and diffuse
flow, in the matrix block where Darcy’s law is still valid. In this paper, we present the simulation of a complex karstified
aquifer system in Crete, Greece, where the presence of main faults drastically affects the regional flow. A discrete fracture
approach in conjunction with an equivalent porous medium approach was adopted to simulate the mixed flow in the area of interest.
The simulation results have shown that the length and the orientation of the dominant faults, primarily during the rainy season,
affect the flow field. 相似文献
This study aimed to compare different methods to analyse the contribution of individual river characteristics to predict the
abundance of Asellus (Crustacea, Isopoda). Six methods which provide the relative contribution and/or the contribution profile of the input variables
of artificial neural network models were therefore compared: (1) the ‘partial derivatives’ method; (2) the ‘weights’ method;
(3) the ‘perturb’ method; (4) the ‘profile’ method; (5) the ‘classical stepwise’ method; (6) the ‘improved stepwise’ method.
Consequently, the key variables which affect the habitat preferences of Asellus could be identified. To evaluate the performance of the artificial neural network model, the model predictions were compared
with the results of a multiple linear regression analysis. The dataset consisted of 179 samples, collected over a 3-year period
in the Zwalm catchment in Flanders, Belgium. Twenty-four environmental variables as well as the log-transformed abundance
of Asellus were used in this study. The different contribution methods seemed to give similar results concerning the order of importance
of the input variables. Nevertheless, their diverse computation led to differences in sensitivity and stability of the methods
and the derived outcomes on the habitat preferences. From an ecological point of view, the environmental variables describing
the stream type (width, depth, stream order and distance to mouth) were the most significant variables for Asellus in the Zwalm catchment during the period 2000–2002 for all applied methods. Indirectly, one can conclude that the water quality
is not the limiting factor for the survival of Asellus in the Zwalm catchment. 相似文献
In this study, an interval-parameter fuzzy-stochastic two-stage programming (IFSTP) approach is developed for irrigation planning
within an agriculture system under multiple uncertainties. A concept of the distribution with fuzzy-interval probability (DFIP)
is defined to address multiple uncertainties expressed as integration of intervals, fuzzy sets, and probability distributions.
IFSTP integrates the interval programming, two-stage stochastic programming, and fuzzy-stochastic programming within a general
optimization framework. IFSTP incorporates the pre-regulated water resources management policies directly into its optimization
process to analyze various policy scenarios; each scenario has different economic penalty when the promised amounts are not
delivered. IFSTP is applied to an irrigation planning in a water resources management system. Solutions from IFSTP provide
desired water allocation patterns, which maximize both the system’s benefits and feasibility. The results indicate that reasonable
solutions are generated for objective function values and decision variables; thus, a number of decision alternatives can
be generated under different levels of stream flows. 相似文献
Urban wastewater treatment leads to the generation of large quantities of biosolids. Accumulation of biosolids is a problem
of environmental relevance due to the existence of heavy metals in the biosolids. Determination of total metal in biosolid
provides information relating pollution levels. Determination of their mobilization capacity and behaviour in the environment
is an important task. An experimental approach commonly used for studying the mobility, transport and bioavailability of metal
in biosolids is the use of selective sequential extraction procedure. In the present study an attempt has been made to study
the heavy metal properties in biosolid samples collected from urban wastewater treatment plants located at Mysore, Karnataka.
Few heavy metals selected for the present study are cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel and zinc. The concentration of
these metals in biosolids and their partition in different fractions are studied. The speciation of metals based on the sequential
extraction scheme was carried out. The concentration of heavy metals is lower than that established by European legislation.
The residual fraction has the maximum percentage of heavy metals whereas, only a small fraction of heavy metals (Fe, Zn and
Cd) are extracted in the most soluble fractions, exchangeable and carbonate fractions. 相似文献
Sequential chemical extraction using chelating agents were used to study the P dynamics and its bioavailability along the surface sediments of the Cochin estuary (southwest coast of India). Sediments were analyzed for major P species (iron bound P, calcium bound P, acid soluble organic P, alkali soluble organic P and residual organic P), Fe, Ca, total carbon, organic carbon, total nitrogen and total sulfur contents. An abrupt increase in the concentration of dissolved inorganic P with increasing salinity was observed in the study region. Iron-bound P exhibited a distinct seasonal pattern with maximum values in the monsoon season when fresh water condition was prevailed in the estuary. As salinity increased, the percentage of iron-bound P decreased, while that of calcium-bound P and total sedimentary sulfur increased. C/P and N/P ratios were low which indicate that large amounts of organic matter enriched with P tend to accumulate in surface sediments. The high organic P contribution in the sedimentary P pool may indicate high organic matter load with incomplete mineralization, as well as comparatively greater percentage of humic substance and resistant organic compounds. Principal component analysis is employed to find the possible processes influencing the speciation of P in the study region and indicate the following processes: (1) the spatial and seasonal variations of calcium bound P and acid soluble organic P was mainly controlled by sediment texture and organic carbon content, (2) sediment redox conditions control the distribution of iron bound P and (3) the terrigenous input of organic P is a significant processes controlling total P content in surface sediments. The bioavailable P was very high in the surface sediments which on an average accounts for 59 % in the pre-monsoon, 65 % in the monsoon and 53 % in the post-monsoon seasons. The surface sediments act as a potential internal source of P in the Cochin estuary. 相似文献
Biocomposites of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) reinforced with chicken feather fibre (CF) were prepared using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as vulcanizing agent. Composites with three series of chicken feather fibres were studied i.e., raw (RCF), sterilized (SCF) and alkali treated (ACF). The cure characteristics of composites were studied. The mechanical properties of NBR were found to be improved by the incorporation of chicken feather fibre in all forms. Surface modification of the fibre was done by alkaline treatment to improve the interfacial adhesion and it characterised by FTIR. Better properties are shown by the composites with ACF. The swelling behaviour of the composites in N,N-dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide and water were analyzed for the swelling coefficient values. The biodegradable characteristics of CF reinforced NBR composites were studied by soil burial test which indicated that it is an eco-friendly and acceptable material. Scanning electron microscopy studies support the results of mechanical properties. The outcome obtained from this study is believed to assist the development of environmentally–friendly composites especially for specific product applications like oil seals, hoses and automobile bushes etc. 相似文献
Animal studies show that exposure to the environmental pollutant 3,3′,4,4′,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126) causes alterations in hepatic metals as measured in acid-digested volume-adjusted tissue. These studies lack the detail of the spatial distribution within the liver. Here we use X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) to assess the spatial distribution of trace elements within liver tissue. Liver samples from male Sprague Dawley rats, treated either with vehicle or PCB126, were formalin fixed and paraffin embedded. Serial sections were prepared for traditional H&E staining or placed on silicon nitride windows for XFM. With XFM, metal gradients between the portal triad and the central vein were seen, especially with copper and iron. These gradients change with exposure to PCB126, even reverse. This is the first report of how micronutrients vary spatially within the liver and how they change in response to toxicant exposure. In addition, high concentrations of zinc clusters were discovered in the extracellular space. PCB126 treatment did not affect their presence, but did alter their elemental makeup suggesting a more general biological function. Further work is needed to properly evaluate the gradients and their alterations as well as classify the zinc clusters to determine their role in liver function and zinc homeostasis. 相似文献
Remote sensing devices have been used for decades to measure gaseous emissions from individual vehicles at the roadside. Systems have also been developed that entrain diluted exhaust and can also measure particulate matter (PM) emissions. In 2015, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reported that 8% of in-field diesel particulate filters (DPF) on heavy-duty (HD) vehicles were malfunctioning and emitted about 70% of total diesel PM emissions from the DPF-equipped fleet. A new high-emitter problem in the heavy-duty vehicle fleet had emerged. Roadside exhaust plume measurements reflect a snapshot of real-world operation, typically lasting several seconds. In order to relate roadside plume measurements to laboratory emission tests, we analyzed carbon dioxide (CO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOX), and PM emissions collected from four HD vehicles during several driving cycles on a chassis dynamometer. We examined the fuel-based emission factors corresponding to possible exceedances of emission standards as a function of vehicle power. Our analysis suggests that a typical HD vehicle will exceed the model year (MY) 2010 emission standards (of 0.2 g NOX/bhp-hr and 0.01 g PM/bhp-hr) by three times when fuel-based emission factors are 9.3 g NOX/kg fuel and 0.11 g PM/kg using the roadside plume measurement approach. Reported limits correspond to 99% confidence levels, which were calculated using the detection uncertainty of emissions analyzers, accuracy of vehicle power calculations, and actual emissions variability of fixed operational parameters. The PM threshold was determined for acceleration events between 0.47 and 1.4 mph/sec only, and the NOX threshold was derived from measurements where after-treatment temperature was above 200°C. Anticipating a growing interest in real-world driving emissions, widespread implementation of roadside exhaust plume measurements as a compliment to in-use vehicle programs may benefit from expanding this analysis to a larger sample of in-use HD vehicles.
Implications: Regulatory agencies, civil society, and the public at large have a growing interest in vehicle emission compliance in the real world. Leveraging roadside plume measurements to identify vehicles with malfunctioning emission control systems is emerging as a viable new and useful method to assess in-use performance. This work proposes fuel-based emission factor thresholds for PM and NOx that signify exceedances of emission standards on a work-specific basis by analyzing real-time emissions in the laboratory. These thresholds could be used to prescreen vehicles before roadside enforcement inspection or other inquiry, enhance and further develop emission inventories, and potentially develop new requirements for heavy-duty inspection and maintenance (I/M) programs, including but not limited to identifying vehicles for further testing. 相似文献
Selection of appropriate residue application method is essential for better use of biomass for soil and environmental health improvement. A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted for 75 days to investigate C and N mineralization of residues of soybean (Glycine max L.), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) placed on the soil surface and incorporated into the soil. The residue of soybean and chickpea had a greater decomposition rate than that of maize and wheat, despite of their placements. Higher rate of decomposition of the residue of soybean and chickpea was recorded when it was kept on the soil surface while soil incorporation of residue of wheat and maize resulted in faster decomposition. Therefore, these findings could be used as guidelines for management of crop residue application in farmland to improve soil and environmental quality. 相似文献
