Summary Parastizopus armaticeps andEremostibes opacus are two closely related desert tenebrionids which also live in close association, the former having biparental brood care and the latter cleptoparasitising the brood.E. opacus is unable to discriminate between the conspecific and host odour even in the absence of physical contact. Gas chromatographic analysis of headspace volatiles of resting animals showed almost complete qualitative and quantitative odour congruity between them. Comparison of these odour profiles with those of two other tenebrionids sharing the same ecological niche,Gonopus agrestis andHerpiscius sp. (damaralis?) showed that congruity was independent of common foodplant utilisation. It is also independent of common defensive gland secretions. Parallels between resting odour spectra, defensive secretion spectra and systematic status suggest that the origins of congruity lie in odour homology, by means of which the cleptoparasite was able to exploit its host.  相似文献

In September 2003 specimens of the sympagic amphipod Gammarus wilkitzkii were sampled in drifting pack ice above 50 m water depth and in the pelagic/benthic environment beneath in the coastal waters off Svalbard (Norway). Abundance values ranged between 1.5 and 8 individuals m–2 for the pelagic/benthic and the sympagic environments, respectively, and showed corresponding sex ratios of 1:1.4, favoring males. In the ice a significantly higher number of juveniles prevailed. In contrast, ovigerous females were more abundant among pelagic/benthic living specimens. Approximately 25% of the individuals hosted ciliated epibionts of the genera Ephelota, Cryptacineta, Acineta, Podophrya (all suctoria), and Epistylis (peritrichia). Cryptacineta and Ephelota were the most abundant epibionts on this amphipod species. Female specimens of G. wilkitzkii showed the highest degree of infestation (>2,100 individual epibionts per amphipod specimen: indE/A) followed by juveniles (>1,200 indE/A) and males (>220 indE/A). Highest densities of epibionts were found on anterior body parts with the antennae bearing up to 130 individuals. This is the first sighting of epibionts on crustacea from the sympagic environment. We interpret them as biomarkers that indicate the existence of sympago–benthic coupling processes between the ice and the underlying waters and the seafloor. The population structure and the proportion of infested specimens are equal for the amphipods sampled from both the sympagic and the pelagic/benthic environment, indicating the existence of exchange (coupling) processes between the two habitats. Considering the annual ice cycle, local ice drift patterns, and the shallow water depth in the sampling area, we hypothesize that ice amphipods spend ice-free periods near the seafloor where they may serve as basibionts for protozoans and eventually re-colonize the ice with the onset of ice formation. Our observations strongly emphasize that shallow coastal areas serve as both retention (rather than sink) areas for ice fauna during ice-free periods, and as stepping-stones for re-colonizing the ice when the ice is formed in winter.Communicated by M. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of microorganisms on the behaviour of selenium in natural soil maintained under strictly aerobic conditions. Six-day batch experiments were performed with soils constrained to different microbiological states, either by sterilisation or by adding organic substrates. Selenium was added to the soil as selenite. The distribution of selenium in the gaseous, liquid and solid phases of the batch was measured. Selenium partitioning between the various solid phases was investigated by chemical sequential extractions. Active microorganisms played major effects on the distribution of selenium within the soil. On the one hand, microorganisms could promote selenium volatilisation (in relatively small amounts), leading to the spreading of selenium compounds outside the soil. On the other hand, microbial activities increased both amount of selenium retained by the soil and the strength of its retention (less exchangeable selenium), making selenium less susceptible to remobilisation.  相似文献

The end products of atmospheric degradation are not only CO2 and H2O but also sulfate and nitrate depending on the chemical composition of the substances which are subject to degradation processes. Atmospheric degradation has thus a direct influence on the radiative balance of the earth not only due to formation of greenhouse gases but also of aerosols. Aerosols of a diameter of 0.1 to 2 micrometer, reflect short wave sunlight very efficiently leading to a radiative forcing which is estimated to be about -0.8 watt per m2 by IPCC. Aerosols also influence the radiative balance by way of cloud formation. If more aerosols are present, clouds are formed with more and smaller droplets and these clouds have a higher albedo and are more stable compared to clouds with larger droplets. Not only sulfate, but also nitrate and polar organic compounds, formed as intermediates in degradation processes, contribute to this direct and indirect aerosol effect. Estimates for the Netherlands indicate a direct effect of -4 watt m-2 and an indirect effect of as large as -5 watt m-2. About one third is caused by sulfates, one third by nitrates and last third by polar organic compounds. This large radiative forcing is obviously non-uniform and depends on local conditions.  相似文献

The impact of anthropogenic pollutants on the marine ecosystem is related to the concentrations experienced by the biota in the seawater and the resulting concentration in the organism. Results from monitoring of pollutants in water samples provide snapshots that can be high or low depending on a wide range of variables. To provide more integrated information, semipermeable membrane devices, SPMDs, have been used to monitor different organic pollutants. In this survey, SPMDs were used to monitor organotin compounds in the marine environment. Time-integrated sampling using SPMDs and direct water sampling was carried out at six stations in the inner Oslofjord, Norway. The sample work-up procedure for both water and SPMDs was based on direct derivatisation using NaBEt4 and simultaneous extraction with an organic solvent. Analysis was performed using a gas chromatograph equipped with an atomic emission detector. The results show that SPMDs do accumulate organotin compounds from the water phase. Both tributyl- (TBT) and dibutyltin were detected in all of the analysed membranes while no monobutyltin was found. Levels found in SPMDs range from < 1 to 220 ng Sn SPMD(-1). Water concentrations range from 0.4 to 10 ng Sn L(-1). An investigation of relative levels of TBT showed a similar concentration gradient in the inner Oslofjord using either direct water sampling or passive sampling by SPMDs. As the membranes are able to accumulate the organotins from the water it will be possible to locate lower concentrations than with direct analyses of water samples.  相似文献

An investigation of the relationship between observed nickel aerosol exposures and urinary nickel excretion was undertaken at a Scandinavian nickel refinery. The goal of the study was to assess the impact of nickel aerosol speciation, the use of particle size-selective sampling instrumentation and adjustment of urinary levels for creatinine excretion on the usefulness of urinary nickel excretion as a marker for exposure. Urinary nickel measurements and paired 'total' and inhalable aerosol exposure measurements were collected each day for one week from refinery workers in four process areas. The mean observed urinary nickel concentration was 12 micrograms L-1 (11 micrograms of Ni per g of creatinine). The strongest relationships between urinary excretion and aerosol exposure were found when urinary nickel levels were adjusted for creatinine excretion and when exposure to only soluble forms of nickel aerosol was considered. No significant difference was observed between measures of 'total' and inhalable aerosol in the ability to predict urinary excretion patterns. In the light of these results, it is recommended that consideration be given to the chemical species distribution of nickel aerosol in the use of urinary nickel measurements as a screening tool for cancer risk in occupationally-exposed populations.  相似文献
