Abstract: Invasions of non‐native species are one of the major causes of losses of native species. In some cases, however, non‐natives may also have positive effects on native species. We investigated the potential facilitative effects of the North American red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) on the community of predators in southwestern Spain. To do so, we examined the diets of predators in the area and their population trends since introduction of the crayfish. Most predator species consumed red swamp crayfish, which sometimes occurred in over 50% of their diet samples. Moreover, the abundance of species preying on crayfish increased significantly in the area as opposed to the abundance of herbivores and to predator populations in other areas of Europe, where those predators are even considered threatened. Thus, we report the first case in which one non‐native species is both beneficial because it provides prey for threatened species and detrimental because it can drive species at lower trophic levels to extinction. Increases in predator numbers that are associated with non‐native species of prey, especially when some of these predators are also invasive non‐natives, may increase levels of predation on other species and produce cascading effects that threaten native biota at longer temporal and larger spatial scales. Future management plans should include the complexity of interactions between invasive non‐natives and the entire native community, the feasibility of successful removal of non‐native species, and the potential social and economic interests in the area.相似文献
Atoll countries are particularly vulnerable to coastal hazards in the context of global change, which justifies the interest in population exposure assessments. This paper contributes to addressing this need by assessing the current exposure of the population of two areas of the South Tarawa Urban District (Tarawa Atoll, Republic of Kiribati) to coastal erosion and flooding. The assessment is based on data relating to island morphology (digital terrain models and shoreline change), land use (building extension and coastal works) and environmental changes reconstructed for the 1969–2008 period. The results highlight rapid changes in land use and significant differences in current population exposure to coastal erosion and flooding between and within study sites. Between 1969 and 2007–2008, the built area located less than 20 m from the reference shoreline has increased by a factor of 4.2 at Bairiki and by a factor of 32.2 at Eita–Bangantebure, enhancing population exposure given that land elevation is low (12.6 and 77.4 % <2 m at Bairiki and Eita–Bangantebure, respectively). Nevertheless, in Bairiki, 87.5 % of the built area is currently not exposed to coastal erosion (>20 m from the coastline) and flooding (>1.5 m). Building exposure is higher at Eita–Bangantebure, where 71.3 % of the built area is currently not exposed (using the same criteria), but 17.1 % shows medium to very high levels of exposure, due to very low land elevation (22.3 % of the land area <1.5 m) and shoreline recession. The Eita–Bangantebure case study exemplifies the maladaptive trajectories of change that have been reported in other atoll countries. 相似文献
An investigation on herbicide uses in two semi-urban catchments was performed simultaneously with sampling campaigns at six stations inside both watersheds from April to July 1998. Urban uses of herbicides exceeded agricultural uses, and transfer coefficients were also higher in urban areas. Therefore, the most used product in urban areas (diuron) was by far the most contaminating product. Householders accounted for 30% of all uses. The highest measured diuron concentration in water surface was 8.7 microg l(-1) due to its use on impervious surfaces. Compared to EEC standards for drinking water production (0.1 microg l(-1)), it is clear that suburban uses of herbicides may severely endanger drinking water production from river water. 相似文献
The concentration of radon-222 has been monitored since 1995 in the atmosphere of a 2 m transverse dimension, 128 m long, dead-end horizontal tunnel located in the French Alps, at an altitude of 1600 m. Most of the time, the radon concentration is stable, with an average value ranging from 200 Bq m(-3) near the entrance to about 1000 Bq m(-3) in the most confined section, with an equilibrium factor between radon and its short-lived decay products varying from 0.61 to 0.78. However, radon bursts are repeatedly observed, with amplitudes reaching up to 36 x 10(3) Bq m(-3) and durations varying from one to several weeks, with similar spatial variations along the tunnel as the background concentration. These spatial variations are qualitatively interpreted in terms of natural ventilation. Comparing the radon background concentration with the measured radon exhalation flux at the wall yields an estimate of 8+/-2 x 10(-6) s(-1) (0.03+/-0.007 h(-1)) for the ventilation rate. The hypothesis that the bursts could be due to transient changes in ventilation can be ruled out. Thus, the bursts are the results of transient increased radon exhalation at the walls, that could be due to meteorological effects or possibly combined hydrological and mechanical forcing associated with the water level variations of the nearby Roselend reservoir lake. Such studies are of interest for radiation protection in poorly ventilated underground settings, and, ultimately, for a better understanding of radon exhalation associated with tectonic or volcanic processes. 相似文献
Dunes that are protected because of their very rich and diverse plant communities are often exposed to excessive visitor pressure.
The effects of trampling on the habitat must be known from a conservation viewpoint but also are important for management.
To determine the response of plant assemblages to trampling by people, an experimental study was conducted on the state-owned
dunes at Quiberon (Brittany, France). Indices of resistance and resilience were used to compare three typical plant communities
belonging to the various landscape units: mobile dune, semifixed dune, and fixed dune. The strong contrasts between communities
belonging to different successional stages reflect their ecological functioning. The mobile dune and semifixed dune with their
low resistance contrasted with the fixed dune. Only the vegetation cover of the semifixed dune benefited from long-term trampling
and had a very high resilience (134%). This response could be explained by a good balance of two opposite factors: soil compaction
increasing soil stability and moisture content, and vegetation destruction. Because of their low resilience, trampling seems
to be harmful for fixed dunes in the long term. The tourist pressure seems easier to integrate in to the mobile dunes and
the semifixed dunes if periods of recovery are included in the management. 相似文献
Wildfires lead to important economic, social, and environmental losses, especially in areas of Mediterranean climate where
they are of a high intensity and frequency. Over the past 30 years there has been a dramatic surge in the development and
use of fire spread models. However, given the chaotic nature of environmental systems, it is very difficult to develop real-time
fire-extinguishing models. This article proposes a method of optimizing the performance of wildfire fighting resources such
that losses are kept to a minimum. The optimization procedure includes discrete simulation algorithms and Bayesian optimization
methods for discrete and continuous problems (simulated annealing and Bayesian global optimization). Fast calculus algorithms
are applied to provide optimization outcomes in short periods of time such that the predictions of the model and the real
behavior of the fire, combat resources, and meteorological conditions are similar. In addition, adaptive algorithms take into
account the chaotic behavior of wildfire so that the system can be updated with data corresponding to the real situation to
obtain a new optimum solution. The application of this method to the Northwest Forest of Madrid (Spain) is also described.
This application allowed us to check that it is a helpful tool in the decision-making process. 相似文献
Objectives: Due to limitations of classic imaging approaches, the internal response of abdominal organs is difficult to observe during an impact. Within the context of impact biomechanics for the protection of the occupant of transports, this could be an issue for human model validation and injury prediction.
Methods: In the current study, a previously developed technique (ultrafast ultrasound imaging) was used as the basis to develop a protocol to observe the internal response of abdominal organs in situ at high imaging rates. The protocol was applied to 3 postmortem human surrogates to observe the liver and the colon during impacts delivered to the abdomen.
Results: The results show the sensitivity of the liver motion to the impact location. Compression of the colon was also quantified and compared to the abdominal compression.
Conclusions: These results illustrate the feasibility of the approach. Further tests and comparisons with simulations are under preparation. 相似文献
Atmospheric aerosol samples(PM_(2.5–0.3), i.e., atmospheric particles ranging from 0.3 to2.5 μm) were collected during two periods: spring–summer 2008 and autumn–winter 2008–2009, using high volume samplers equipped with cascade impactors. Two sites located in the Northern France were compared in this study: a highly industrialised city(Dunkirk) and a rural site(Rubrouck). Physicochemical analysis of particulate matter(PM) was undertaken to propose parameters that could be used to distinguish the various sources and to exhibit seasonal variations but also to provide knowledge of chemical element composition for the interpretation of future toxicological studies. The study showed that PM2.5–0.3concentration in the atmosphere of the rural area remains stable along the year and was significantly lower than in the urban or industrial ones, for which concentrations increase during winter.High concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), dioxins, furans and dioxin like polychlorinated biphenyls(DL-PCBs), generated by industrial activities, traffic and municipal wastes incineration were detected in the samples. Specific criteria like Carbon Preference Index(CPI) and Combustion PAHs/Total PAHs ratio(CPAHs/TPAHs) were used to identify the possible sources of atmospheric pollution. They revealed that paraffins are mainly emitted by biogenic sources in spring–summer whereas as in the case of PAHs, they have numerous anthropogenic emission sources in autumn-winter(mainly from traffic and domestic heating). 相似文献
Aquatic invertebrates (water flea Daphnia magna) were exposed to low dose rates of external gamma radiation (from 0.4 to 31mGyh(-1)) over a 23-day period (i.e. 5 broods). Gamma radiation caused changes in neither survival nor somatic growth. Mass-specific respiration rate was significantly lower at 31mGyh(-1) than in the control. Reproduction was affected through early release and reduced size of broods after 15 days of exposure at 31mGyh(-1) (broods 3-5), resulting in a 21% fecundity decrease at 31mGyh(-1) compared to the control. A decreased resistance of neonates to starvation was observed in relation to dose rates. Possible mechanisms of gamma radiotoxicity for daphnid reproduction and implications for radioprotection are discussed. 相似文献
