Transfer pathways and accumulation of vanadium in the crab Carcinus maenas

The transfer pathways of vanadium in Carcinus meanas (L.) were investigated from February to April 1978 in order to determine the role of the food and environmental medium in the accumulation of this metal. The carbs, purchased from a fish market in Nice, France, in February 1978, were contaminated by food (the polychaete Nereis divesicolor), by environmental medium, and by food plus medium. In the early stages (15 d) of contamination, the accumulation of vanadium was greatest in crabs exposed to the contaminated medium. In later stages (30 d) crabs exposed to contaminated food plus medium exhibited the highest accumulation. Very little accumulation was observed in crabs contaminated by food alone.     

Decomposition of 2-mercaptothiazoline in aqueous solution by ozonation

This study investigates the ozonation of 2-mercaptothiazoline (2-MT). The 2-MT is one of the important organic additives for the electroplating solution of the printed wiring board industry and has been widely used as a corrosion inhibitor in many industrial processes. It is of concern for the aquatic pollution control especially in the wastewaters. Semibatch ozonation experiments in the completely stirred tank reactor are performed under various concentrations of input ozone. The concentrations of 2-MT, sulfate, and ammonium are analyzed at specified time intervals to elucidate the decomposition of 2-MT during the ozonation. In addition, the time variation of the dissolved ozone concentration (C(ALb)) is continuously monitored in the course of experiments. Total organic carbon (TOC) is chosen and measured as a mineralization index of the ozonation of 2-MT. The results indicate that the decomposition of 2-MT is efficient, while the mineralization of TOC is limited via the ozonation only. Simultaneously, the yield of sulfate with the maximum value of about 47% is characterized by the increases of TOC removal and ozone consumption. These results can provide some useful information for assessing the feasibility of the treatment of 2-MT in the aqueous solution by the ozonation.     

Secondary air pollutants

The study has been performed in a supposedly clean-air region of a Northern Finnish forest with a homogeneous stand of Scots pine. Stomatal epicuticular wax layer erosion is described using a classification system of five erosion stages. The percentage of stomatal wax within each erosion stage is calculated and the results are treated statistically, which makes the morphological study of the needle surface semi-quantitative. Severe wax degradation has already been found in the current year, increasing with the age of the needles. In this area, the wax layer erosion is correlated with secondary air pollutants, as analyses have shown high trichloroacetate (TCA) levels in needles from the same trees. The wax layer analyses are in accordance with earlier findings which have demonstrated differences in tolerance to TCA.
