The importance of species interactions and recruitment variability was examined during the first year and a half of primary succession (1988–1989) on an exposed rocky seashore near Halifax, Nova Scotia. Previous work suggested that emergent rock on these shores is normally dominated by fucoid rockweeds because predatory whelks control the sessile animal competitors, mussels and barnacles, and because herbivorous littorinids control ephemeral algal competitors. Abundances of all species except seasonal ephemeral algae were very small throughout this experiment and we found no significant effects of carnivory, herbivory, plant-animal competition or plant-plant competition. A slight facilitation of Fucus recruitment is attributed to a thin mat of ephemeral, blue-green algae. Very few other studies have directly manipulated intertidal ephemeral algae. As primary succession may be very rare in this assemblage, these results may be specific to these circumstances, but they highlight the varying importance of species interactions with variable recruitment. In particular, it appears that variations in recruitment success may be important to community structure, even when recruitment is not limited by propagule supply. The scale of the study also provides insight into successional processes occurring after the recent, extensive ice-scour of exposed seashores in this region.  相似文献

In this paper the data of a forest health inventory are analyzed. Since 1983 the degree of defoliation, together with various explanatory variables (covariates) concerning stand, site, soil and weather, are recorded by the second of the two authors, in the forest district of Rothenbuch (Spessart, Bavaria). The focus is on the space and time dependencies of the data. The mutual relationship of space-time functions and the set of covariates is evaluated. For this we use generalized linear models (GLMs) for ordinal response variables and semiparametric estimation approaches. By using goodness-of-fit measures it turns out that (i) the contribution of space-time functions is quantitatively comparable with that of the set of covariates, (ii) the contribution of space-time functions is small compared with the contribution of a set of variables describing the last-year and neighboring response values. By applying appropriate residual methods a detailed analysis of the individual sites in the area can be carried out. This analysis reveals where the predictive power of the covariates fail to explain the observed defoliation.  相似文献

During a preliminary set of experiments (April 1987). I measured short-term (20 d) reproductive responses of laboratory-cultured Capitella sp. 1 at 20°C, at four daily ration levels (0.26 to 2.60 mg of organic nitrogen per bowl), and for four food types: Gerber's mixed cereals, Ulva sp., diatoms, and Tetramen fish food. Average female body size, number of fertile segments, and fecundity were significantly affected both by food type and food ration. Average fecundities ranged from 21 (Gerber, 0.26 mg N d-1) to 448.3 eggs per female (Tetramen, 2.60 mg N d-1). During a second set of experiments (May 1987), I measured the reproductive response of laboratory-cultured Capitella sp. 1 at 20°C at six ration levels of spring and summer sediment-trap material collected in the Patuxent Estuary, Maryland, USA. Worms raised on these two diets failed to reproduce during the period of this experiment. I used simple and miltiple linear-regression models to describe relationships between fecundity and daily rations and macro- (dry wt, C, N) and micronutrients (essential amino- and essential fatty acids). These models were carried out on three data sets corresponding to either 4 or 6 food types. The results suggest that different nutritional factors may be limiting for different foods. However micronutrients and especially essential amino acids probably more aptly describe nutritional limitation of reproduction in Capitella sp. 1.  相似文献

Allozyme variation at six polymorphic loci was examined in foliose dictyoceratid sponges from isolated reefs in the western Coral Sea. Four major genetic groups corresponding to the species Phyllospongia lamellosa, P. alcicornis, Carterospongia flabellifera and Collospongia auris were examined. A further two rare morphotypes from individual reefs formed genetic outliers to the P. lamellosa group, and may represent further taxa related to P. lamellosa. Gene frequencies in individual reef populations were largely in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting that random mating occurred in local populations of all four common species. Genetic variability was high and observed heterozygosities within populations ranged from 0.13 to 0.40. All four taxa showed significant genetic differentiation among populations (F ST=0.05 to 0.36). Genetic distances (Nei's D) among populations within species ranged from 0 to 0.723 and increased with increasing geographical separation. There was evidence that genetic differentiation between populations to the north and to the south of the southern limit of the South Equatorial Current (SEC) divergence was greater than expected on the basis of their geographical separation. The SEC divergence may form a partial barrier to gene flow among populations of these ecologically important sponges on the submerged Queensland Plateau. Levels of migration among populations of three of the species was less than those required to prevent divergence of the populations through genetic drift (Nm<1). Restricted migration among populations may provide a mechanism to explain the occurrence of highly divergent populations of dictyoceratid sponges whose specific identity is not clear, and may allow them additionally to develop partial reproduction isolation from other populations.  相似文献

The tropical marine sponge Dysidea herbacea (Keller) (Dictyoceratidae: Dysideidae) is always found associated with the filamentous cyanobacterium (blue-green alga) Oscillatoria spongeliae (Schulze) Hauck (Cyanophyceae: Oscillatoriaceae), which occurs abundantly throughout the sponge mesohyl. Intact, metabolically active, trichomes of O. spongeliae were isolated from the sponge by chopping the sponge tissue with a razor blade and squeezing the trichomes into a seawater-based medium containing polyvinylpyrrolidone, bovine serum albumin, dithiothreitol, glycerol, KCl and Na2CO3. The isolated cyanobacteria were concentrated by centrifugation and then washed several times in fresh medium. The isolated O. spongeliae have photosynthetic rates which are similar to the intact sponge-alga association for periods of at least 6 h after isolation. Addition of sponge homogenate to the isolated cyanobacteria causes rapid cell lysis.  相似文献

The fatty acids (FA) in neutral lipid (NL) and polar lipid (PL) of digestive gland, muscle and integument of Penaeus esculentus Haswell were analysed and compared during the moulting cycle and during starvation. The prawns were collected from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, by trawling during 1985–1987, and were fed with a standard semi-purified diet. Compared with a natural diet, the artificial diet had much higher levels of 18:1n-9 and 18:2n-6, but only trace amounts of 20:4n-6, but there was no evidence of dietary imbalance. The fatty acid composition (percentage of total lipid) of the digestive gland changed markedly during the moulting cycle and during starvation, but the small changes observed in both muscle and integument suggested that these tissues maintained their composition under both conditions. When the fatty acids were calculated as absolute amounts, muscle composition, as well as that of the digestive gland, changed significantly. In the digestive gland, saturated FA (SFA), monounsaturated FA (MUFA), diunsaturated FA (DUFA) and polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) all increased up to the middle of the moulting cycle and then declined; with starvation all groups decreased. In muscle, SFA, MUFA and DUFA all increased during the moulting cycle; starvation caused SFA, MUFA and PUFA to decrease, whereas DUFA did not vary. Starvation caused both 18:2n-6 (linoleic) and 18:3n-3 (linolenic) in the digestive gland to reach or almost reach zero. The other essential PUFA, 20:4n-6 (arachidonic), 20:5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic), decreased during the moulting cycle, but during starvation 20:4n-6 did not decrease as much. In muscle, the levels of 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 increased, while 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 remained approximately constant during the moulting cycle. Starvation reduced 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 to about 60%. The data suggest that levels of 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 are regulated, and that 20:4n-6 can be synthesised from 18:2n-6. There is no clear evidence that 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 are essential in P. esculentus, but tissue catabolism of cell membranes during starvation may have provided sufficient amounts for maintenance.  相似文献
