Abstract: Many fishing methods and gear types used in coral reefs cause physical damage to the reef substratum. Only recently have monofilament fishing lines been recognized as a cause of coral damage and death. We assessed the extent of damage caused by monofilament fishing lines to the cauliflower coral ( Pocillopora meandrina ) colonies in fished and adjacent unfished zones at seven sites in the main Hawaiian islands. We examined coral colonies for the presence or absence of fishing line and for the degree of damage (dead, no live coral surface; damaged, some dead coral surface; or intact, no dead coral surface) in nine 25-m2 grids. The mean proportion of colonies entangled with fishing lines in fished zones ranged from 0.18 to 0.44. The mean proportion of dead or damaged colonies was higher in fished than adjacent unfished zones, and there was a positive linear relationship between the proportion of colonies entangled with fishing lines and the proportion of dead or damaged colonies. These results indicate that monofilament fishing lines have a negative impact on the health and survival of P. meandrina colonies. Because tourism and related recreational fishing activities are expanding rapidly in many tropical states and nations, we recommend that the degrading effects of fishing lines on corals be considered in the design and management of tourism development. 相似文献

The effects of two paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) producing dinoflagellates, Alexandrium minutum Halim (high and low toxin strains) and Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, on the pelagic harpacticoid copepod Euterpina acutifrons Dana were tested in a series of experiments run from October 1994 to May 1995. In small volumes (350 ml), both strains of A. minutum (300 to 350 cells ml-1), and G. catenatum (175 cells ml-1), strongly reduced naupliar activity (about 30 and 17% were inactive after 24 h, respectively). Activity is here defined as movement. In medium volumes (6 litre), 40% of nauplii incubated with the high toxin strain of A. minutum (1000 cells ml-1) and 8% of nauplii incubated with cell-free filtrate of the same culture were inactive after 24 h; these values increased to 50 and 30% respectively after 3 d. In large volumes (20 litre), adult copepods incubated with A. minutum (1000 and 10000 cells ml-1) for 5 d revealed only trace levels of PSP-toxins (paralytic shellfish poisoning) in the extracts analysed by HPLC. With both strains of A. minutum (1000 and 10000 cells ml-1), 10 to 15% of the copepods were inactive after 1 to 2 d. It is suggested that E. acutifrons avoids feeding on the dinoflagellates after tasting a few cells, but that the dinoflagellates may exude toxins or other substances that affect the copepods. The inactivating effect of the toxic dinoflagellates on the nauplii was more rapid and stronger than on adult copepods, although strong inactivation and death were also observed in adults with time (up to 80% were inactive after 5 d of incubation with A. minutum). Still, in our experiments a considerable proportion of adult females incubated with the toxic dinoflagellates remained active and were able to produce viable eggs for several days. 相似文献

Crandallite (Ca,Sr) Al3 (PO4)2 (OH)5 · H2O crystallizes in the alunitecrystal lattice. Because of its open structure, the cations Ca2+, Sr2+, and Al3+ can be replaced by various elements depending on their diadochial properties; the element entering into the crystal network thus becomes immobilized. Artificial amorphous crandallite has been shown to eliminate the heavy metal ions: Pb2+>>Cu2+>Hg2+>>Cd2+ from contamined water in the presence of lateritic phosphates. Vertical and horizontal distributions of 3 larval stages of the oyster Crassostrea virginica were measured concurrently with phytoplankton species compositions, phytoplankton size distributions and physical hydrographic parameters in tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay (USA) during the oyster spawning seasons of 1980 and 1981. The superposition of the biological distributions upon the physical hydrographic data provide instantaneous distributions of the entire system which are consistent with the upstream transport of oyster larvae. Oyster larvae distributions in the Choptank River and its Broad Creek and Tred Avon River tributaries can be described in terms of three contiguous regions: (1) a common spawning region, (2) an intermediate, upstream transport region and (3) a seed bed region where major spat set occurs. The phytoplankton species compositions and abundances in the size fraction less than 10 m in the tributary system during the transport were sufficient to supply optimum growth requirements of developing larvae. The transport proposed can explain the 30 yr record of consistently higher spat set success in one tributary, Broad Creek, relative to an adjoining tributary, the Tred Avon River. Role of herbivory in controlling phytoplankton abundance: annual pigment budget for a temperate marine fjord 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An annual pigment budget was constructed for Dabob Bay, Washington (USA) by comparing the downward vertical loss of phytoplankton pigments (chlorophyll and pheopigments) to the production of chlorophyll within the euphotic zone. The vertical flux of pigments was measured with sediment traps deployed at intervals of 1 to 6 wk over a 2.5 yr period yielding 763 d of trap exposure (28 November 1978–16 June 1981). The production rate of chlorophyll was calculated from measurements of algal specific growth rates, chlorophyll (chl) crops, primary production (as carbon) and appropriate C: chl ratios. Sixty one to 77% of the annual chlorophyll production was accounted for by the vertical flux of pheopigments resulting from herbivorous zooplankton grazing (macrozooplankton). Algal sinking, represented by downward chlorophyll flux, accounted for only 5 to 6% of the annual chlorophyll production. The remaining fraction of chlorophyll production was estimated to be consumed by small herbivores (microzooplankton), whose fecal material contributes to the suspended pool of pheopigments found in the euphotic zone. The suspended pheopigments are continuously removed by photodegradation. In Dabob Bay, the major process controlling phytoplankton abundance is zooplankton grazing and it appears that the ultimate fate of most phytoplankton is to be consumed by herbivores. 相似文献

As part of the evaluation of fluxes between the water column and a rich benthic community of the Dover Strait (Eastern English
Channel), laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption were carried out on a common ophiurid, Ophiothrix fragilis (Abildgaard), from February 1993 to February 1995. The mean O2-consumption rate was evaluated at 0.31 mg O2 g−1 h−1 (ash-free dry weight). Simultaneous measurements of O2 consumption and CO2 production using the pH-alkalinity method revealed an average respiratory quotient of 0.69 proved suitable for converting
oxygen demand to carbon flux. A seasonal trend in respiration data was demonstrated by sinusoidal curves fitted to O2-uptake and CO2-release data as a function of time. The influence on respiration rate of two seasonal parameters (temperature and food availability)
is discussed; linear regression indicated a highly significant relationship between O2 consumption (or CO2 production) and temperature; both O2-consumption and CO2-production rates decreased with starvation. The average O:N ratio was estimated at 8.46, close to the theoretical value when
proteins constitute the catabolic substrate. The annual carbon respired by the O. fragilis community examined and the estimated annual primary production by phytoplankton indicate that the respiration of the O. fragilis community could supply 35% of phytoplankton carbon requirements.

Interactions between males on leks may play an influential role in lek formation and the regulation of lek size. In this
paper I present the results of a playback experiment that simulated de novo settlement at sites adjacent to currently existing display territories of the ochre-bellied flycatcher, Mionectes oleagineus. In the study population, males displayed both solitarily and at small leks. A large proportion of males held no display
territory at all. A stranger's song was played to both solitary and lekking males from 10 m outside their territorial boundaries.
In separate playbacks, lekking males were also played neighbour's song. Both lekking and solitary territorial males reacted
to the playback by decreasing their song rate, approaching the playback speaker and, on occasion, attacking the model. Solitarily
displaying males responded more aggressively to playback of stranger's song than did lek males. Lek males were able to distinguish
between their neighbour's and a stranger's song and did so irrespective of whether it was played from the neighbour's territory
or from outside the lek. In addition to distinguishing between neighbours and strangers, lek males modified their responses
to these different playbacks depending on where the playback originated. These results suggest that male-male interactions
can be influential in structuring leks. In M. oleagineus, interactions between males are aggressive and act to limit rather than augment lek size.

A Comparison of Corridors and Intrinsic Connectivity to Promote Dispersal in Transient Successional Landscapes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Low-vagility organisms that specialize on transitory successional habitats may be especially dependent upon habitat connectivity to maintain population viability. We analyzed the theoretical intrinsic connectivity of successional landscapes (i.e., the natural juxtaposition of similar habitats that allows dispersal) as a function of patch geometry coupled with the disperser's habitat specificity. Habitat specialists living in poorly connected landscapes (approximating hexagonal patches) have only a 26.5% chance of colonizing a new site when their resident patch becomes unsuitable. In contrast, generalists living in well connected landscapes can virtually always colonize a new site when needed. We infer from our simulation that for some habitat specialists, such as the rare, endemic Florida scrub lizard (Sceloporus woodi), anthropogenic control of successional dynamics for commercial logging may significantly reduce intrinsic connectivity. Lizard population viability may now depend upon the extrinsic connectivity provided by artificial corridors. However, the use of corridors will not serve as a general solution to the problem of anthropogenically reduced intrinsic connectivity until key logistical design problems have been resolved. Moreover, efforts to enhance intrinsic connectivity by modifying patch geometry may produce undesirable edge effects and conflict with old-growth preservation. Future research should focus on developing spatially explicit corridor models, documenting natural levels of intrinsic connectivity, quantifying anthropogenic disruption of natural connectivity, and describing species-specific mechanisms of inter-patch dispersal. 相似文献

用一组多克隆抗体对马氏甲烷八叠球菌(Methanosarcinamazei)S-6菌株的基因组DNA文库进行了筛选.仅选出p60A克隆能对马氏甲烷八叠球菌中可发生细胞形态学变化菌株的抗血清发生阳性反应.对p60A克隆的双链DNA进行了序列分析.识别出一开式阅读框架(openreadingframeP,ORFP).表达的蛋白是ORFP编码的蛋白的3倍,并得到ORFP蛋白的三聚体,在SDS-PAGE中表现出整体蛋白的迁移行为.同时,此表达蛋白抗10%SDS,6mol/L尿素及热处理.基因结构分析表明,ORFP具有与M.barkrimcrA有同源性的核糖体结合位点和一个与甲烷细菌启动子共有序列相似度达77%的启动子序列.使用参照序列分析表明,由ORFP演绎的氨基酸序列,具有高密度的带电荷的氨基酸和占优势的β-层迭构型.对此表达蛋白作了Neurosroracrassa的porin蛋白抗血清试验,以研究其可能功能.检验了M.mazeiS-6细胞的蔗糖梯度制备物,对此原细胞中的ORFP蛋白作了定位.结果表明,ORFP蛋白可能是一种古细菌Porin,其在M.mazeiS-6中的表达,可能象大肠杆菌那样与渗透压调节有关. 相似文献
