Sequestration of carbon through expansion and management offorestland can assist in reducing greenhouse gas concentrationsin the atmosphere. Quantification of the amount of carbonpresents an ongoing challenge that calls for new approaches.These new approaches must seek to simplify the science-basedaccounting of carbon storage and flux, while adhering to generalprinciples of greenhous gas accounting. Quantifying change incarbon storage and carbon flux consists of two steps: developinga baseline of carbon storage, and measuring resulting storageand flux following a change of conditions. A methodology isproposed that accomplishes both steps, applicable to anaggregate-level analysis using the state of Iowa (U.S.A.) as a case study. The method combines existing databasesfrom the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and U.S. Department ofAgriculture (USDA), and merges these with the methods of Birdsey(USDA, 1992, 1995; IPCC, 1997; EIIP, 1999) for partitioningcarbon stocks into storage pools. Forested ecosystems in the study area contain approximately 137.3 metric tons organiccarbon per hectare, or 114 million metric tons of carbon inaggregate. Of this total, 44.7 million tons are stored inbiomass tissue, and 69.2 million tons of carbon are contained insoils. Carbon flux due to forests in the state of Iowa isestimated to be a net annual sequestration (removal from theatmosphere) of 4.3 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent,approximately 5% of the net annual CO2-equivalentemissions from the state (Ney et al., 1996). 相似文献

Protandrous hermaphrodites are predicted to change sex from male to female when relative reproductive fitness of females surpasses
that of males. How size at sex transition varies with population, mating group and individual parameters was investigated
for five populations of the protandrous hermaphrodite slipper snail, Crepidula fornicata. The populations varied for density, size distribution, average mating group size and sex ratio. Size at sex-change was correlated
with the population sex ratio. Comparisons of multiple hypotheses revealed that variables predicting the sex of a snail vary
among positions in the mating group. The variables included body size, the relative size of the snail sitting atop the focal
snail and population density. Our data support the conclusions that size at sex-change (and by inference, the size at which
one sex has relatively greater fitness) is not fixed for these hermaphrodites and that individual size, social conditions
and population differences all influence variation in relative fitness. 相似文献

Many cities and national authorities have made substantial progress in developing transport strategies to reconcile environmental pressures with the increasing demand for travel. However, there is still some doubt as to what are the key ingredients of a successful strategy and progress in implementing such changes has been slow. Research is needed to better understand what are the essential ingredients to a balanced transport policy, the constraints, which are preventing these from being implemented, and the acceptability of such changes. This paper reports on the outcomes of a project funded under the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund research programme 'From Realism to Reality', which aims to identify the elements necessary for a successful transport policy in the UK into the 21st century, The project seeks to develop a vision for the transport system of the future through an understanding of the extent of the current problems in the transport sector and an examination of the range and effectiveness of options and instruments available to resolve them. The paper examines a range of visions that are currently in the public domain. Results show that there is a degree of consistency in the general aims and objectives of such visions, but that there is rather less consensus in the means proposed to achieve those aims. 相似文献

An Empirical Evaluation of Private Landowner Participation in Voluntary Forest Conservation Programs
The use of voluntary programs targeting resource conservation on private land has become increasingly prevalent in environmental
policy. Voluntary programs potentially offer significant benefits over regulatory and market-based approaches. This article
examines the factors affecting landowner participation in voluntary forest conservation programs using a combination of parcel-level
GIS and remotely sensed data and semi-structured interviews of landowners in Monroe County, Indiana. A logistic regression
model is applied to determine the probability of participation based on landowner education, membership in other non-forest
voluntary programs, dominant land use activity, parcel size, distance from urban center, land resource portfolios, and forest
cover. Both land use activity and the spatial configuration of a landholder’s resource portfolio are found to be statistically
significant with important implications for the design and implementation of voluntary programs.

The distribution of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn between a contaminated soil and the tree species Paulownia tomentosa was investigated in a pilot-scale assisted phytoremediation study. The influence of the addition of EDTA, tartrate and glutamate at 1, 5 and 10mM concentrations on metal accumulation by the plant and on metal mobilization in soil was evaluated. Root/shoot metal concentration ratios were in the range of 3-5 for Zn, 7-17 for Cu, 9-18 for Cd and 11-39 for Pb, depending on the type and concentration of complexing agent. A significant enhancement of metal uptake in response to complexing agent application was mainly obtained in roots for Pb (i.e. 359 mg kg(-1) for EDTA 10mM and 128 mg kg(-1) for the control), Cu (i.e. 594 mg kg(-1) for glutamate 10mM and 146 mg kg(-1) for the control) and, with the exception of glutamate, also for Zn (i.e. 670 mg kg(-1) for tartrate 10mM and 237 mg kg(-1) for the control). Despite its higher metal mobilization capacity, EDTA produced a metal accumulation in plants quite similar to those obtained with tartrate and glutamate. Consequently the concentration gradient between soil pore water and plant tissues does not seem to be the predominant mechanism for metal accumulation in Paulownia tomentosa and a role of the plant should be invoked in the selection of the chemical species taken up. Metal bioavailability in soil at the end of the experiment was higher in the trials treated with EDTA than in those treated with tartrate and glutamate, the latter not being significantly different from the control. These findings indicated the persistence of a leaching risk associated to the use of this chelator, while an increase of the environmental impact is not expected when glutamate and tartrate are applied. 相似文献

A rapid biological method for the determination of the bioavailability of naphthalene was developed and its value as an alternative to extraction-based chemical approaches demonstrated. Genetically engineered whole-cell biosensors are used to determine bioavailable naphthalene and their responses compared with results from Tenax extraction and chemical analysis. Results show a 1:1 correlation between biosensor results and chemical analyses for naphthalene-contaminated model materials and sediments, but the biosensor assay is much faster. This work demonstrates that biosensor technology can perform as well as standard chemical methods, though with some advantages including the inherent biological relevance of the response, rapid response time, and potential for field deployment. A survey of results from this work and the literature shows that bioavailability under non-equilibrium conditions nonetheless correlates well with Koc or Kd. A rationale is provided wherein chemical resistance is speculated to be operative. 相似文献

We augment discussions about the Good Environmental Status of the North Sea by developing two extreme visions and assessing their societal benefits. One vision (‘Then’) assumes restoration of benthic functioning; we contend that trawling had already degraded the southern North Sea a century ago. Available information is used to speculate about benthic functioning in a relatively undisturbed southern North Sea. The second vision (‘Now’) draws on recent benthic functioning. The supply of five ecosystem services, supported by benthic functioning, is discussed. ‘Then’ offers confidence in the sustainable supply of diverse services but restoration of past function is uncertain and likely to be paired with costs, notably trawling restraints. ‘Now’ delivers known and valued services but sustained delivery is threatened by, for example, climate change. We do not advocate either vision. Our purpose is to stimulate debate about what society wants, and might receive, from the future southern North Sea.

Electricity and hydrogen can be used as energy carriers to reduce emissions of CO2 from small and mobile energy users. One of the most promising technologies for the production of electricity and hydrogen with low CO2 emissions is coal gasification with CO2 capture and storage. Performance and cost data are presented for plants which produce electricity and hydrogen alone and plants which co-produce both of these energy carriers. The co-production plants include plants which produce a fixed ratio of hydrogen to electricity and plants which are able to vary the ratio while continuing to operate the gasification and CO2 capture parts of the plant at full load. The paper also assesses the ability of these types of plants to satisfy the varying demands for hydrogen and electricity in future energy supply systems. The lowest cost option for the scenarios assessed in the paper is the use of flexible co-production plants with underground buffer storage of hydrogen. 相似文献
