Using questionnaire and interview data, this study attempted to find out whether the organizational loose (participative) and tight (directive) practices are compatible with or contradict each other. Using the theoretical framework of Sagie's ( 1997 ) loose–tight leadership approach, our hypotheses concerned the effects of both practices on the employee's work‐related attitudes, and the mediating role of two variables, cognitive (information sharing) and motivational (exerting effort), in these effects. Data were analysed using two methodological approaches, quantitative and qualitative. Based on a quantitative analysis of the questionnaires given to 101 professional employees of a textile company, partial support was provided for the study hypotheses. A qualitative analysis of in‐depth, semi‐structured interviews with all the employees (n = 20) in one of the company divisions led to similar conclusions. Specifically, we found that although the loose and tight practices affected work attitudes, the interviewees attributed more impact to the tight practice. In addition, none of the study variables mediated the loose impact on attitudes, whereas information sharing (but not exerting effort) mediated the influence of tight practice. Finally, the qualitative analysis revealed a deeper insight into the nature of both leader practices and their possible integration in the decision‐making processes in organizations. Based upon path–goal theory of leadership, decision type (strategic versus tactical) was suggested as a moderator variable between employee participation in decision making (PDM) and work outcomes. A total of 249 respondents in five Israeli organizations undergoing planned changes, participated in the study. Results from four out of the five organizations revealed that participation in tactical rather than strategic decisions was a better predictor of an increase in change acceptance, work satisfaction, effectiveness, and time allotted to work. The stronger effects associated with tactics rather than strategy were found even if PDM expectations were included. Theoretical and practical implications of the results were discussed. 相似文献

In honeybees, workers under queenless condition compete for reproduction and establish reproductive dominance hierarchy. Ovary
activation is generally accompanied by the expression of queen-like pheromones. Biogenic amines (BAs), in particular dopamine,
are believed to be involved in this process by regulating ovarian development. However, the role of BAs in establishing reproductive
dominance or their effect on queen-like pheromone production was not investigated. Here, we explored the effect of octopamine
(OA) and tyramine (TA) oral treatments on the propensity of treated bees to become reproductively dominant and produce queen-like
pheromones in Dufour’s and mandibular glands. One bee in a pair was treated with either OA or TA while the other was fed sugar
solution. TA was found to enhance ovary development and the production of esters in the Dufour’s gland and 9HDA (queen component)
in the mandibular glands, thus facilitating worker reproductive dominance. OA, on the other hand, did not enhance ovarian
development or ester production, but increased the production of 10HDA (worker major component) in the mandibular glands of
their sugar-paired mates. OA is known to induce foraging behavior by workers, while increased production of 10HDA characterizes
nursing workers. Therefore, we suggest that TA induces reproductive division of labor, while OA treatment results in caste

Oxidation of formaldehyde over supported platinum catalyst produced CO2 as a major product and CO as a minor product under a wide range of Inlet concentrations and reaction temperatures. The temporal variation of CO yield proceeded through a maximum suggesting that it was produced as an intermediate in the pathway leading to CO2. CO selectivity (S co = y co/x HCHO) was maximized by operating at oxygen concentration below the stoichiometric point and at high reaction temperatures. A mechanism for formaldehyde oxidation is proposed which involves adsorption of formaldehyde followed by catalytic decomposition to CO and H2 and oxidation of the surface species; the rate limiting step apparently shifts from the decomposition at high oxygen concentration to the oxidation of surface species at low concentration. The rate expression was obtained from the postulated mechanism and found to be consistent with the experimental results. The maximum for the yield of CO provided a second method by which to confirm the postulated rate expression. 相似文献

This article discusses how the concept of integrated learning systems provides a useful means of exploring the functional
linkages between the governance and management of public protected areas. It presents a conceptual framework of an integrated
learning system that explicitly incorporates learning processes in governance and management subsystems. The framework is
premised on the assumption that an understanding of an integrated learning system is essential if we are to successfully promote
learning across multiple scales as a fundamental component of adaptability in the governance and management of protected areas.
The framework is used to illustrate real-world situations that reflect the nature and substance of the linkages between governance
and management. Drawing on lessons from North America and Africa, the article demonstrates that the establishment and maintenance
of an integrated learning system take place in a complex context which links elements of governance learning and management
learning subsystems. The degree to which the two subsystems are coupled influences the performance of an integrated learning
system and ultimately adaptability. Such performance is largely determined by how integrated learning processes allow for
the systematic testing of societal assumptions (beliefs, values, and public interest) to enable society and protected area
agencies to adapt and learn in the face of social and ecological change. It is argued that an integrated perspective provides
a potentially useful framework for explaining and improving shared understanding around which the concept of adaptability

In the course of our studies on the chemical ecology of the widely distributed Mediterranean ant Aphaenogaster senilis, we found that trail following is triggered by extracts of the poison gland and Dufour’s gland. To assess the specificity
of the trail pheromone, we examined whether a cross-reaction exists between trails of A. senilis and the closely related species A. iberica. Specificity seemed to differ amongst these two species, because workers of A. senilis did not follow trails of A. iberica, whereas the latter followed trails made by both species. Chemical analyses of the glandular contents reveal that Dufour’s
glands of both species contain mainly alkanes and alkenes exhibiting species-specific profiles. However, differences in the
poison gland content of the two species were dramatic, with A. senilis showing high amounts of alkaloids that were completely absent in A. iberica. 相似文献

A study was made of copepods of the family Acartiidae which form the dominant component of the plankton in the Cochin Backwater (Kerala, India). At least nine species inhabit the backwater at one time or another, more than have been recorded for any other area. Reasons were sought for this diversity. The surface plankton was sampled from the head of the estuary to the mouth and from one season to another. There were large seasonal changes in salinity (0 to 35 ), due to monsoonal flooding, and associated changes in species composition. Species diversity was highest during the dry season and lowest in the wet. It is suggested that this annual catastrophic flooding leads, in the long run, to high species diversity by imposing a regular check on interspecific competition. 相似文献

Researchers have suggested the use of credibility intervals for identifying moderator effects in meta-analysis. In the present study, the accuracy of decisions derived from credibility intervals was determined from Monte Carlo generated correlations based on two series of meta-analyses, one containing 20 studies and the other, 100 studies. Within each study, the responses of 100 subjects were simulated. Although in some marginal cases the accuracy measures (Type I error rate and power) from the credibility intervals were better than those derived from the SH-75 per cent and U rules, the former technique was generally found to be a poor indicator of heterogeneity or homogeneity. Finally, the concept of a large interval was discussed and a rule of thumb for using it to detect moderators was suggested. 相似文献

Based on the reality of (a) soil heterogeneity in the vadose zone, (b) enhanced desorption from soil and solubility in water of water insoluble contaminants in the presence of surfactants, and (c) wetting/drying cycles of groundwater recharge (a major cause of fractures formation), a coherent “short-cut” conceptual approach is advanced to account for enhanced groundwater contamination. This is an attempt to close the gap between theory, lab simulations and conventional modelling-based predictions, and observed higher concentrations and more rapid arrival times of contaminants reaching groundwater. Recent data concerning chloride ion and non-ionic surfactants concentrations in aquifers and groundwater wells, combined with previous results concerning the concentrations of tritium, chlorides, metals, organic hydrocarbons and surfactants in the unsaturated and saturated zones of Israel's aquifers, are accounted for in terms of the “short-cut” approach. The contradiction between predictions of groundwater contamination made with conventional, deterministic, homogeneous models and the actual observed behavior of contaminants in soils and aquifers is thus explaind. The “short cut” approach should not be perceived as a better type of model to guide modelling. Rather, it is a proposal for a conceptual change from the realistically invalid, but commonly accepted, conventional “buffer-protective soil/long-term groundwater contamination” to the “short cut” conceptual model to explain the enhanced groundwater contamination actually observed. Although the validity of the proposed approach is strongly supported by the data here presented for the case of Israel (serving as an illustrative case study), selected results and conclusions drawn from studies conducted worldwide suggest its general applicability and usefulness. A major conclusion evolved from the “short-cut” conceptual model is that contemporary groundwater management policies, based on the current perception of groundwater contamination processes and their modelling, may result in an irreversible detrimental effect on the environmental situation in the long run. In any case, prevention, rather than correction/remediation, is strongly recommended as the strategy of choice for rational long-term management of groundwater resources. 相似文献
