Environmental aspects of mineral sand mining in Australia

The operations of the heavy mineral sand mining industry in Australia are reviewed, with particular emphasis on the environmental aspects. Pre-mining environments, state and commonwealth legislative requirements, mining procedures and postmining rehabilitation and land use are described. The extraction of heavy minerals, principally rutile, zircon, ilmenite and monazite, is concentrated on the east coast between the Hawkesbury River in New South Wales and Rockhampton in Queensland; and on the west coast at Capel, south of Perth and at Eneabba, north of Perth. The industry, especially on the east coast, has suffered from conservationist and anti-mining movements during the 1970s because it operates on or near the coastline where the majority of Australians live or seek their recreation. This was less of a problem on the west coast because the deposits were inland. The future of the industry is good as long as a balance can be maintained between the interests of conservationists and the mining companies.     

Prenatal diagnosis of turner syndrome using cells cultured from cystic hygromas in two pregnancies with normal maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein

In two cases of prenatally detected cystic hygroma with oligohydraminos, successful cytogenetic diagnosis of Turner syndrome was achieved using cells obtained from direct aspiration of the cystic hygroma. Exceptionally high levels of alpha-fetoprotein were found in the cystic hygroma fluid, as might be expected. However, the maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were within normal limits. Elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels in ‘amniotic fluid’ noted previously in the literature may have resulted because of inadvertent tapping of the cystic hygroma. It is clear from our cases that maternal serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein will not necessarily be elevated and will not serve as a screening mechanism for cystic hygromas.     

Correlation between phenotypic expression of de novo marker chromosomes and genomic organization using replicational banding

It has been suggested that actively expressed genes are primarily located in early replicating bands. This hypothesis is supported by cytogenetic and pregnancy outcome data from four consecutive cases of prenatally detected de novo marker chromosomes. Two fetuses with major anomalies had large early replicating bands, while the marker in a third phenotypically normal fetus was late replicating. In the fourth case, a ring marker chromosome had only a small early replicating region. Pregnancy termination was elected. While no structural malformations were apparent, potential intellectual function in this case remains unresolved. An understanding of the relationship between genomic organization and chromosome banding is critical in counseling for prenatally detected de novo marker chromosomes. Replicational banding is particularly helpful in recognizing genes that may be actively expressed and result in developmental abnormality.     

Fetal cells in the uterine cervix: a source for early non-invasive prenatal diagnosis

Various non-invasive techniques for prenatal diagnosis have been under investigation. We evaluated the success of fetal sexing using a non-invasive technique for obtaining fetal cells, uterine cervix brushing, in combination with FISH. Thirty pregnant women who completed between 6 and 10 weeks of gestation and who were scheduled to undergo pregnancy termination were included in the study. A Pap smear cytobrush was inserted through the external os to a maximum depth of 2 cm and removed while rotating it a full turn. The material that was caught on the brush was spread on four microscope slides. Two-color FISH was used for fetal sexing. Following pregnancy termination, a placental sample was used for full karyotyping. In 29/30 cases FISH diagnosis was confirmed by chromosomal analysis. The only male case in which a Y chromosome was not seen was from a pregnancy of 6 weeks 6 days gestational age. One case was mosaic of 46,XY/47,XXY (25%). In most cases (7/13) the Y chromosome was already identified in the first analyzed slide. With the use of a cytobrush fetal cells can be easily obtained for the purpose of prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal disorders. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Selenium content of rice,mixed plant foods and fish from Bangladesh

Static and dynamic adsorption studies of Co (II) ions have been undertaken at fixed pH and ionic strength taking binary biopolymeric beads of cross-linked calcium alginate and carboxy methylcellulose as biosorbents. The adsorption data were applied to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations and various static parameters were calculated. The dynamic nature of adsorption process was quantified in terms of several kinetic constants such as rate constants for adsorption (K) and Lagergreen rate constant (K _ad). The influence of various experimental parameters such as solid-to-liquid ratio, pH, and temperature, the presence of salts and chemical composition of biopolymeric beads were investigated on the adsorption of cobalt ions.     

A critique of the official report on the evacuation of the World Trade Center: continued doubts

This paper criticises the conclusions and the unanswered questions in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)'s official report on the evacuation of the World Trade Center in New York City, United States, on 11 September 2001. It reviews the extent to which the report disregards several conventional statistical methods and comments on the NIST's refusal to share the machine‐readable data file with the scientific community for replication and further analysis. Problems lie in the sampling methods employed, the treatment of missing data, the use of ordinary least squares (OLS) with binary dependent variables, the failure to document the scalability of the scales used, the lack of tests to check for constant error variance, and the absence of overall fit tests of the model. There are also conceptual and theoretical issues, such as the absence in the report of considerations of the influence of group‐level processes and their impact on the collective behaviour of evacuating collectivities.     

Colour discrimination and associative learning in hatchling lizards incubated at ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ temperatures

The ability of an animal to acquire, process and learn from information in their environment is thought to be fundamental to fitness. We currently have a poor understanding of the learning ability of young animals within the first few months of their life, the types of learning they use and the extent of their learning ability. Furthermore, an animal’s developmental environment, such as nest incubation temperature, may profoundly influence motor and cognitive skills. We first tested the ability of hatchling three-lined skinks (Bassiana duperreyi) incubated at ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ temperatures to solve an instrumental (motor) task before assessing their ability to learn colour associations in a multi-stage instrumental task, with a choice reversal. While 53 (88.3 %) lizards successfully completed the training phase, 14 (46.7 %) of the ‘hot’ incubated and none of the ‘cold’ incubated lizards successfully completed the instrumental task. Thirteen of these lizards rapidly learnt to discriminate colours, and this culminated in eight individuals successfully completing a choice reversal. Hatchling B. duperreyi demonstrated surprisingly rapid learning, and these results highlight the potentially important role of cognition during development and ultimately, in fitness.
