A population of Palaemonetes pugio Holthuis 1949, inhabiting a fairly constant high salinity estuarine environment (North Inlet), exhibited more rapid growth, earlier first reproduction, a smaller clutch size, more fluctuating sex ratio, and shorter life span. A population in a less saline environment (Minim Creek) showed relatively slower growth, delayed first reproduction, larger clutch size, female-dominated sex ratio, and longer life span. Growth in both areas was rapid in summer and slower in winter, with the females growing much larger than the males. Summer generation females first reproduced at the age of 3.5 months in North Inlet and at 4.8 months in Minim Creek. Minim Creek females larger than 30-mm TL carried more eggs than North Inlet females of similar sizes. Life span in North Inlet was calculated to be 6–7 months for the summer generation and 9–10 months for the winter generation; in Minim Creek, the corresponding longevity estimates were 9–10 months and 12–13 months, respectively. Variations in life history patterns are hypothesized to be the results of numerous environmental factors acting differentially on the various life-stages of the organism. The results suggest that the reproductive flexibility of P. pugio enhances its ability to persist in a variety of environments.Contribution no. 426 of the Belle W. The difficulty of determining transient fluid contents in a soil–oil–water system is hampering an understanding of the system's flow characteristics. In this paper, we describe a light transmission method (LTM) which can rapidly obtain oil and water contents throughout a large two-dimensional flow field of silica sand. By appropriately coloring the water with 0.005% FD&C blue #1, the hue of the transmitted light is found to be directly related to the water content within the porous media. The hue provides a high resolution measurement of the water and oil contents in transient flow fields (such as unstable flow). Evaluation of the reliability of LTM was assessed by checking the mass balance for a known water injection and its utility in visualizing a whole flow field was exemplified for unstable fingered flow by comparing fluid contents to those obtained with synchrotron X-ray radiation.  相似文献

Excess boron is a growing environmental problem. It often affects agricultural yields, where reuse of wastewater for irrigation is practiced. This problem raises the need for reliable, simple and economical methods to monitor boron concentrations in wastewater and soil extracts. One such method, the commonly used azomethine-H spectrophotometric method, suffers from color interference, originating from high concentrations of dissolved organic matter, when applied to many wastewater and agricultural soil extracts. Moreover, this method only quantifies free dissolved boron and lacks the ability to quantify boron that is adsorbed to either the dissolved organic matter or suspended solids that are present in the sample. This work suggests a modification of the standard azomethine-H method, in which the solution is digested with potassium persulfate prior to the standard procedure. We show that this pretreatment can overcome the color interference and lead to highly accurate and precise boron analyses in wastewater. In soil extracts, the boron concentrations obtained using the suggested procedure were better correlated to inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry results than those measured by the standard method, because whereas the standard method quantifies the free dissolved boron only, the modified method, like the ICP method, quantifies the total dissolved boron in the sample. Thus, the suggested modification can be used to quantify the respective distributions of free dissolved boron, boron adsorbed to dissolved organic matter and boron adsorbed to suspended solids in soil extracts and water samples.  相似文献

Livestock production in both industrial systems, where livestock are packed tightly together, and in highly traditional systems, where a shepherd follows her herd in dispersed rangelands, are cited as key contributors in some of the most acute environmental problems around the globe. Israel is one of the few countries where both of these systems exist, with surprisingly little contact between them. The environmental impact of the sectors were examined along with Israel’s public policies in the field. While historically, much attention has been placed on the contribution of the Bedouin pastoralists to desertification and erosion, this may be linked to historic misapprehension about actual impacts of goats on local rangelands as well as political motivations and concerns about losing national sovereignty over large areas of rangelands. The true environmental effects appear to be minor. A far more critical concern is water pollution caused by the industrial sector of livestock production—an issue that recently has attracted considerable government attention and investment in a successful dairy infrastructure initiative. The divisions between governmental supports for the Jewish and Arab sectors of livestock management are inconsistent with efficient environmental management. Policies should be designed to encourage Bedouin to find ways to sustainably continue their traditional livestock husbandry practises, which today are largely associated with ecological benefits and constitute a unique cultural asset for Israel and the world.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Stream ordering is a useful property of every river network, having a wide range of applications. A method for determining stream orders that quickly and easily addresses various network topologies and magnitudes is therefore needed. This paper introduces a general recursive stream ordering framework for vector hydrography. It also presents a linear, O(n), stream ordering procedure for braided river networks, which is a major improvement to the existing quadratic, O(n2), procedure. The discussion includes results and interpretations, and the appendices present procedure pseudocodes and thorough line by line explanations.  相似文献
