The SALLJEX experiment was held during the summer 2002–2003. It consisted of three-dimensional observation of the atmosphere to study the structure of the low level jet along the eastern slopes of the Andes. Daily precipitation water samples were collected at two stations (Resistencia and Salta) in northern Argentina and isotope content was analyzed. The isotope data were used in conjunction with air parcel trajectories obtained from a 3-D kinematic model (3D-MTC) developed by the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Values of deuterium excess were related with air masses of continental origin, whilst low values were associated with air masses with longer oceanic trajectories. Furthermore, although data are scarce, results show that oxygen-18 and deuterium excess in rainwater are related with the occurrence of the low level jet.  相似文献

This paper presents results of the AQL2004 project, which has been develope within the GOFC-GOLD Latin American network of remote sensing and forest fires (RedLatif). The project intended to obtain monthly burned-land maps of the entire region, from Mexico to Patagonia, using MODIS (moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer) reflectance data. The project has been organized in three different phases: acquisition and preprocessing of satellite data; discrimination of burned pixels; and validation of results. In the first phase, input data consisting of 32-day composites of MODIS 500-m reflectance data generated by the Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF) of the University of Maryland (College Park, Maryland, U.S.A.) were collected and processed. The discrimination of burned areas was addressed in two steps: searching for "burned core" pixels using postfire spectral indices and multitemporal change detection and mapping of burned scars using contextual techniques. The validation phase was based on visual analysis of Landsat and CBERS (China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite) images. Validation of the burned-land category showed an agreement ranging from 30% to 60%, depending on the ecosystem and vegetation species present. The total burned area for the entire year was estimated to be 153 215 km2. The most affected countries in relation to their territory were Cuba, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela. Burned areas were found in most land covers; herbaceous vegetation (savannas and grasslands) presented the highest proportions of burned area, while perennial forest had the lowest proportions. The importance of croplands in the total burned area should be taken with reserve, since this cover presented the highest commission errors. The importance of generating systematic products of burned land areas for different ecological processes is emphasized.  相似文献

Annual global aquaculture production has more than tripled within the past 15 years, and by 2015, aquaculture is predicted to account for 39% of total global seafood production by weight. Given that lack of adequate nutrition is a leading contributor to the global burden of disease, increased food production through aquaculture is a seemingly welcome sign. However, as production surges, aquaculture facilities increasingly rely on the heavy input of formulated feeds, antibiotics, antifungals, and agrochemicals. This review summarizes our current knowledge concerning major chemical, biological and emerging agents that are employed in modern aquaculture facilities and their potential impacts on public health. Findings from this review indicate that current aquaculture practices can lead to elevated levels of antibiotic residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, persistent organic pollutants, metals, parasites, and viruses in aquacultured finfish and shellfish. Specific populations at risk of exposure to these contaminants include individuals working in aquaculture facilities, populations living around these facilities, and consumers of aquacultured food products. Additional research is necessary not only to fully understand the human health risks associated with aquacultured fish versus wild-caught fish but also to develop appropriate interventions that could reduce or prevent these risks. In order to adequately understand, address and prevent these impacts at local, national and global scales, researchers, policy makers, governments, and aquaculture industries must collaborate and cooperate in exchanging critical information and developing targeted policies that are practical, effective and enforceable.  相似文献

The Reynolds number for flow in a street canyon, Re?=?UrefH/ν (where Uref is a reference velocity, H the street canyon height, and ν the kinematic viscosity), cannot be matched between reduced-scale experiments and full-scale field measurements. This mismatch is often circumvented by satisfying the Re independence criterion, which states that above a critical Re (Rec), the flow field remains invariant with Re. Rec?=?11,000 is often adopted in reduced-scale experiments. In deep street canyons with height-to-width aspect ratio ≥?1.5, reduced-scale experiments have shown two recirculation vortices induced by the mean flows, but full-scale field measurements have observed only one vortex. We investigated this discrepancy by conducting water channel experiments with Re between 104 and 105 at three aspect ratios. The canyons with aspect ratio 1.0 have Rec?=?11,000, the canyons with aspect ratio 1.5 have Rec between 31,000 and 58,000, while the canyons with aspect ratio 2.0 have Rec between 57,000 and 87,000. Therefore, the widely adopted Rec?=?11,000 is not applicable for canyons with aspect ratio greater than 1.5. Our results also confirm that there is only one vortex in deep canyons at high Re. This single-vortex flow regime could change our fundamental understanding of deep canyons, which are often assumed to exhibit multiple-vortex flow regimes. Applications such as numerical model validation based on the multiple-vortex regime should be revisited. Our experimental data with Re up to 105 could be used to validate numerical models at high Re.  相似文献

A total of 310 individuals (124 males, 185 females, 1 indeterminate) of the octopod Octopus salutii caught throughout the year by bottom trawlers from 25 to 800 m depth in the western Mediterranean were analysed to study some general aspects of its biology. Octopus sizes ranged from 4.0 to 13.0 cm ML and 3.5 to 16.5 cm ML in males and females, respectively. The species inhabits the lower continental shelf and upper slope, primarily between 250 and 500 m depth. The scarcity of small-sized individuals in the samples and the predominance of males and females >8 and >9 cm ML, respectively, suggest two interpretations: (1) juveniles inhabit grounds inaccessible to, or unsampled by, trawlers, or they avoid capture owing to behavioural aspects; or (2) the species meet in the trawling grounds for reproduction, because in the sizes described the majority of individuals have begun sexual maturation. The reproductive period was found to occur during spring and summer. The stomach content analysis revealed a diet composed of 33 different prey items belonging to three major taxonomic groups (crustaceans, fishes and cephalopods). Quantitatively, crustaceans (Decapoda Reptantia and Natantia groups) were the most important prey, appearing in 87% of the stomachs, followed by fish (25%) and cephalopods (10%). Finally, the paper presents data on mantle length–total weight, gonad weight–total weight and ligulae length–total weight relationships, and utilises different indexes (gonadosomatic, hepatosomatic, fullness weight and emptiness) to describe changes through the three maturity stages of both sexes.Communicated by S.A. We investigated the possible effects of a 12-g data-logger attached to a darvic ring on the performance of Corys shearwater (Calonectris diomedea, 600–850 g) from two different colonies in the western Mediterranean Sea. We compared return rates, current breeding success and body condition between equipped and unequipped birds. Effects on feeding ecology during winter and breeding period was also evaluated through the measurement of stable isotopes of carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) in one of the colonies. We found no evidence of negative effects of loggers on demographic parameters analysed or in feeding ecology. Power analyses suggested a high power to detect medium effect size, but a low power to detect small changes. Despite the non-significant results we could only exclude medium to strong effects of the devices on one of these parameters. We detected some short-term negative effects on body condition for the equipped birds, but these were unlikely to have had important consequences. Results suggest that the use of loggers is an adequate methodology to obtain information from seabirds at sea, but data should be carefully interpreted with regard to potential biases during severe environmental conditions.Communicated by S.A. The mobility of isoproturon [3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] from an alginate-based controlled release (CR) formulation was investigated by using soil columns. A layered bed system simulating the typical arrangement under a plastic greenhouse, which is composed of sand, peat, amended soil and native soil was used. The CR formulation was based on sodium alginate (1.87%), isoproturon (1.19%), natural bentonite (3.28%), and water (93.66%), and was compared to technical grade isoproturon. The use of the alginate-bentonite CR formulation produced less vertical mobility of the active ingredient as compared to the technical product. There was no presence of herbicide in the leachate when the alginate-bentonite CR formulation was used. However, 0.90% of isoproturon appeared when the treatment was carried out with technical grade material. Isoproturon mobility was modelled using the programme CMLS, which showed the peat layer to retard pesticide leaching. Analysis of the soil columns showed the highest isoproturon concentration in the peat layer.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an adaptation of the air pollution control help system in the neighborhood of a power plant in As Pontes (A Coru?a, Spain), property of Endesa Generación S.A., to the European Council Directive 1999/30/CE. This system contains a statistic prediction made half an hour before the measurement, and it helps the staff in the power plant prevent air quality level episodes. The prediction is made using neural network models. This prediction is compared with one made by a semiparametric model.  相似文献

On-road mobile sources contribute substantially to ambient air concentrations of the carcinogens 1,3-butadiene, benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The current study measured benzene and 1,3-butadiene at the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel tollbooth over 3-hr intervals on seven weekdays (n = 56). Particle-bound PAH was measured on a subset of three days. The 3-hr outdoor 1,3-butadiene levels varied according to time of day and traffic volume. The minimum occurred at night (12 a.m.-3 a.m.) with a mean of 2 microg/m3 (SD = 1.3, n = 7), while the maximum occurred during the morning rush hour (6 a.m.-9 a.m.) with a mean of 11.9 microg/m3 (SD = 4.6, n = 7). The corresponding traffic counts were 1413 (SD = 144) and 16,893 (SD = 692), respectively. During the same intervals, mean benzene concentration varied from 3 microg/m3 (SD = 3.1, n = 7) to 22.3 microg/m3 (SD = 7.6, n = 7). Median PAH concentrations ranged from 9 to 199 ng/m3. Using multivariate regression, a significant association (p < 0.001) between traffic and curbside concentration was observed. Much of the pollutant variability (1,3-butadiene 62%, benzene 77%, and PAH 85%) was explained by traffic volume, class, and meteorology. Results suggest > 2-axle vehicles emit 60, 32, and 9 times more PAH, 1,3-butadiene, and benzene, respectively, than do 2-axle vehicles. This study provides a model for estimating curbside pollution levels associated with traffic that may be relevant to exposures in the urban environment.  相似文献
