Among the myriad particles the human respiratory tract is exposed to, a significant number are distinctive in that they include humic substances (HS) and humic-like substances (HULIS) as organic components. HS are heterogeneous, amorphous, organic materials which are ubiquitous occurring in all terrestrial and aqueous environments. HULIS are a complex class of organic, macromolecular compounds initially extracted from atmospheric aerosol particles which share some features with HS including an aromatic, polyacidic nature. As a result of having a variety of oxygen-containing functional groups, both HS and HULIS complex metal cations, especially iron. Following particle uptake by cells resident in the lung, host iron will be sequestered by HS- and HULIS-containing particles initiating pathways of inflammation and subsequent fibrosis. It is proposed that (1) human exposures to HS and HULIS of respirable size (<10 µm diameter) are associated with inflammatory and fibrotic lung disease and (2) following retention of particles which include HS and HULIS, the mechanism of cell and tissue injury involves complexation of host iron. Human inflammatory and fibrotic lung injuries following HS and HULIS exposures may include coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, sarcoidosis, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as well as diseases associated with cigarette smoking and exposures to emission and ambient air pollution particles. 相似文献

In this paper, we propose a semiparametric survival model to investigate the pattern of spatial and temporal variation in
disease prevalence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wild deer in Wisconsin over the years 2002 and 2006. The semiparametric
survival model we suggested allows to build a more flexible model than the parametric model with fewer parametric assumptions
by modeling the baseline hazard using a Gamma process prior. Based on the proposed model, we investigate the geographical
distribution of CWD, and assess the effect of sex on disease prevalence. We use a Bayesian hierarchical framework where latent
parameters capture temporal and spatial trends in disease incidence, incorporating sex and spatially correlated random effects.
We also propose bivariate baseline hazard which change over age and time simultaneously to adopt different effects of age
and time on the baseline hazard. Inference is carried out by using MCMC simulation techniques in a fully Bayesian framework.
Our results suggest that disease has been spreaded mainly in the disease eradication zone and male deer show a significantly

As more and more organizations with responsibility for natural resource management adopt adaptive management as the rubric in which they wish to operate, it becomes increasingly important to consider the sources of uncertainty inherent in their endeavors. Without recognizing that uncertainty originates both in the natural world and in human undertakings, efforts to manage adaptively at the least will prove frustrating and at the worst will prove damaging to the very natural resources that are the management targets. There will be more surprises and those surprises potentially may prove at the very least unwanted and at the worst devastating. We illustrate how acknowledging uncertainty associated with the natural world is necessary but not sufficient to avoid surprise using case studies of efforts to manage three wildlife species; Hector's Dolphins, American Alligators and Pallid Sturgeon. Three characteristics of indeterminism are salient to all of them; non-stationarity, irreducibility and an inability to define objective probabilities. As an antidote, we recommend employing a holistic treatment of indeterminism, that includes recognizing that uncertainty originates in ecological systems and in how people perceive, interact and decide about the natural world of which they are integral players. 相似文献

Animal color patterns often reflect a compromise between natural selection for crypsis or inconspicuousness to predators and
sexual selection for conspicuousness to potential mates. In leaf litter-dwelling wolf spider species like Schizocosa ocreata, body coloration often closely matches the background coloration of a generally brown environment. However, body parts used
in communication should exhibit high contrast against background coloration. We used spectral analysis to examine male and
female S. ocreata for matching and contrasting coloration against leaf litter. Values were plotted in multivariate color space, based on reflectivity
in different frequency ranges. When viewed from above, colors of both males and females overlap with values for dead brown
leaf litter and soil, suggesting cryptic coloration when viewed by potential predators. However, when viewed from a lateral
perspective, both males and females show color values that are polar opposites of litter backgrounds, suggesting higher contrast
when viewed by other spiders. Moreover, male secondary characters used in visual signaling by S. ocreata (tibia brushes) show the highest level of background contrast. These findings suggest that S. ocreata wolf spiders have color patterns that provide both crypsis and background contrast at the same time, depending on receiver

Carbon monoxide monitoring using continuous samplers is carried out in most major urban centres in the world and generally forms the basis for air quality assessments. Such assessments become less reliable as the proportion of data missing due to equipment failure and periods of calibration increases. This paper presents a semi-empirical model for the prediction of atmospheric carbon monoxide concentrations near roads for the purpose of interpolating missing data without the need for any traffic or emissions information. The model produces reliable predictions while remaining computationally simple by being site-specifically optimized. The model was developed for, and evaluated at, both a suburban site and an inner city site in Hamilton, New Zealand. Model performance statistics were found to be significantly better than other simple methods of interpolation with little additional computational complexity. 相似文献

Species of the reef goby genus Gnatholepis exhibit enormous geographic ranges with little evidence of population segregation detectable based on mitochondrial DNA.
To determine if genetic differentiation is evident with more rapidly evolving markers, seven microsatellite loci were screened
from the species Gnatholepis anjerensis and G. scapulostigma and population segregation was tested among fish from across the South Pacific. Both AMOVA and pairwise F
ST analyses showed that, in concordance with previous mitochondrial results, most genetic variance occurs within individual
populations, as population differentiation is evident only over the largest distances (>3,700 km). This result is contrasted
with previous studies demonstrating that despite their relatively long larval periods, some gobiid fishes exhibit population
differentiation on small (<100 km) geographic scales. Coalescence analysis showed that current Pacific populations of these
species originated in the Pleistocene, presumably related to sea level fluctuations associated with episodes of glaciation.
However, rate analysis based on a phylogeny of Gnatholepis species indicates that the species themselves are much older, consistent with a complex history of rapid, short-term population

Marine macroalgae are believed to be among the most productive autotrophs in the world. However, relatively little information exists about spatial and temporal variation in net primary production (NPP) by these organisms. The data presented here are being collected to investigate patterns and causes of variation in NPP by the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, which is believed to be one of the fastest growing autotrophs on earth. The standing crop and loss rates of M. pyrifera have been measured monthly in permanent plots at three sites in the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. Collection of these data began in June 2002 and is ongoing. Seasonal estimates of NPP and growth rate are made by combining the field data with a model of kelp dynamics. The purpose of this Data Paper is to make available a time series of M. pyrifera NPP, growth, and standing crop that is appropriate for examining seasonal and interannual patterns across multiple sites. Data on plant density in each plot and censuses of fronds on tagged plants at each site are also made available here. NPP, mass-specific growth rate, and standing crop are presented in four different metrics (wet mass, dry mass, carbon mass, and nitrogen mass) to facilitate comparisons with previous studies of M. pyrifera and with NPP measured in other ecosystems. Analyses of these data reveal seasonal cycles in growth and standing crop as well as substantial differences in M. pyrifera NPP among sites and years. 相似文献

The future disposal of treated groundwater at the former Nebraska Ordnance Plant (NOP) Superfund site has been a topic of interest to the local property owners, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the local regulatory agencies. The Record of Decision for the site includes the extraction, treatment, and disposal of almost 3,000 gpm of groundwater with an estimated restoration time period exceeding 100 years. Interest from property owners and the Nebraska agency charged with regulating groundwater supply prompted the Corps of Engineers to consider several strategies for beneficially reusing the treated water. Alternatives included the establishment of a rural water district or local distribution system; delivery of the water to the municipal supply system of Lincoln, Nebraska, andsol;or other nearby municipalities; and consideration of innovative remedial technologies to reduce the quantity of treated water requiring disposal. The selected disposal plan consists of providing treated groundwater to interested parties for agricultural use with excess treated groundwater discharged to two streams. Multiple feasibility studies were generated, public input was solicited, and interagency agreements were executed during the course of the project. The remediation project is currently being constructed, and at least one property owner has constructed a new center‐pivot irrigation system to use the treated groundwater. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons. 相似文献
