Understanding the dynamics of population recovery is particularly complex when an organism has multiple, remote breeding and feeding grounds separated by one of the longest known migration routes. This study reports on the most comprehensive assessment of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) movements between remote Antarctic waters south of New Zealand and east Australia (EA), and the migratory corridors and breeding grounds of Australia and Oceania. A total of 112 individual whales were identified; 57 from microsatellites and 61 by fluke with 23 % (n = 26) matched to sites outside Antarctica. Despite large datasets from other southern regions being included in the comparison, the whales were predominantly linked to EA (n = 24). Only two matches to the Oceania catalogues directly north was surprising; therefore the primary feeding grounds of these endangered whales still remain unknown. The confirmation of the Balleny Islands as an important feeding ground for EA whales could provide an insight into reasons behind the rapid recovery of this population. Determining the feeding grounds of Oceania’s whales may explain whether prey energetics or migration length are limiting factors to their recovery and will allow an understanding of future ecosystem changes in these whales. 相似文献

In response to a call from the US National Research Council for research programs to combine their data to improve sea turtle population assessments, we analyzed somatic growth data for Northwest Atlantic (NWA) loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from 10 research programs. We assessed growth dynamics over wide ranges of geography (9–33°N latitude), time (1978–2012), and body size (35.4–103.3 cm carapace length). Generalized additive models revealed significant spatial and temporal variation in growth rates and a significant decline in growth rates with increasing body size. Growth was more rapid in waters south of the USA (<24°N) than in USA waters. Growth dynamics in southern waters in the NWA need more study because sample size was small. Within USA waters, the significant spatial effect in growth rates of immature loggerheads did not exhibit a consistent latitudinal trend. Growth rates declined significantly from 1997 through 2007 and then leveled off or increased. During this same interval, annual nest counts in Florida declined by 43 % (Witherington et al. in Ecol Appl 19:30–54, 2009) before rebounding. Whether these simultaneous declines reflect responses in productivity to a common environmental change should be explored to determine whether somatic growth rates can help interpret population trends based on annual counts of nests or nesting females. Because of the significant spatial and temporal variation in growth rates, population models of NWA loggerheads should avoid employing growth data from restricted spatial or temporal coverage to calculate demographic metrics such as age at sexual maturity. 相似文献

The geographic mosaic theory of coevolution states that variation in species interactions forms the raw material for coevolutionary processes, which take place over large geographic scales. One key assumption underlying the process of coevolution in plant-herbivore interactions is that herbivores exert selection on their host plants and that this selection varies among plant populations. We examined spatial variation in the existence and strength of phenotypic selection on host plant resistance exerted by specialist herbivores in 17 archipelago populations of the perennial herb Vincetoxicum hirundinaria (Asclepiadaceae). In these highly fragmented populations, V. hirundinaria is consumed by the larvae of two specialist herbivores: the folivorous moth Abrostola asclepiadis and the seed predator Euphranta connexa. Selection imposed on host plants by these herbivores was examined by analyzing the associations between levels of herbivory, plant fitness, and contents of a number of leaf chemicals reflecting plant resistance to and quality for the herbivores. We found extensive spatial variation in the levels of herbivory and in plant fitness. More importantly, the impact of both leaf herbivory and seed predation on plant fitness varied among plant populations, indicating spatial variation in phenotypic selection. In addition, leaf chemistry varied widely among plant populations, reflecting spatial variation in plant quality as food for the herbivores. However, leaf compounds influenced folivory similarly in all the studied plant populations, and interestingly, some of the compounds were associated with the intensity of seed predation. Finally, some of the leaf compounds were associated with plant fitness, and the strength and direction of these associations varied among plant populations. The observed spatial variation in the strength of the interactions between V. hirundinaria and its specialist herbivores suggests a geographic selection mosaic. Because the occurrence and strength of spatial variation varied between the two specialist herbivores, our results highlight the importance of considering multiple enemies when trying to understand evolution of interactions between plants and their herbivores. 相似文献

Investigations on the binding mechanism of the herbicide simazine to dissolved organic matter in leachates of compost 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
14C-labelled simazine was composted together with biowaste on a pilot (m3) scale. The herbicide was quickly bound to the compost matrix. By aqueous extraction of 29 and 200 days old compost (equivalent to thermophilic and mesophilic phase of composting) only 4.2% and 3.1% respectively of the radioactivity in the compost samples could be extracted with water. Analysis of the extracts using high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) revealed that the dissolved organic matter (DOM) had molecular weights ranging between 2 and 28 kDa. The amount of DOM-associated radioactivity increased from 53% (day 29) to 65% (day 200) of total extractable radioactivity. The type of binding of the 14C-labelled residues and the DOM was elucidated by silylation of humic matter and subsequent HPSEC. The data demonstrated that besides polar metabolites also intact simazine was bound to the DOM. A distinct shift from rather weak interactions to strong covalent linkages of simazine and its metabolites with increasing age of the compost was observed. The results showed that only low amounts of free simazine and its degradates can be extracted with water. We concluded that the shift towards stable covalent linkages is equivalent to a detoxification of the contaminant in aged compost. Consequently, the use of the analysed compost in its mature stage should not pose an environmental risk to the groundwater or the subsoil. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Over a three‐year period, flow and nutrients were monitored at 13 sites in the upper North Bosque River watershed in Texas. Drainage areas above sampling sites differed in percent of dairy waste application fields, forage fields, wood/range, and urban land area. A multiple regression approach was used to develop total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) export coefficients for the major land uses in these heterogeneous drainage areas. The largest export coefficients were associated with dairy waste application fields followed by urban, forage fields, and wood/range. An empirical model was then established to assess nutrient contribution by major sources using developed export coefficients and point source loadings from municipal wastewater treatment. This model was verified by comparison of estimated loadings to measured in‐stream data. Monte Carlo simulation techniques were applied to provide an uncertainty analysis for nutrient loads by source, based on the variance associated with each export coefficient. The largest sources of nutrients contributing to the upper North Bosque River were associated with dairy waste application fields and forage fields, while the greatest relative uncertainty in source contribution was associated with loadings from urban and wood/range land uses. 相似文献

The fate of oxytetracyclines (OTCs) in soil interstitial water was investigated and the structure of a number of degradation products elucidated in a time-related experiment. A previously developed separation method for LC–MS–MS able to base separate and quantify OTC and three of its epimers and degradation products was applied. Compounds detected were 4-epi-oxytetracycline (EOTC) (tR=3.0 min), OTC (tR=4.4 min), -apo-oxytetracycline (-apo-OTC) (tR=11.4 min) and β-apo-oxytetracycline (β-apo-OTC) (tR=18.4 min). Furthermore, we tentatively identified 4-epi-N-desmethyl-oxytetracycline (E-N-DM-OTC) (tR=3.0 min), N-desmethyl-oxytetracycline (N-DM-OTC) (tR=3.5), N-didesmethyl-oxytetracycline (N-DDM-OTC), 4-epi-N-didesmethyl-oxytetracycline (E-N-DDM-OTC) (tR=3.7 and 4.7 min) and 2-acetyl-2-decarboxamido-oxytetracycline (tR=8.7) in all samples. Most compounds were only present in trace concentrations (less than 2%) relative to the parent OTC. EOTC was on the other hand formed up to a ratio of 0.6 relative to parent OTC concentration. Only EOTC, E-N-DM-OTC, N-DM-OTC, N-DDM-OTC and E-N-DDM-OTC were formed during the time-related experiment. All other compounds were probably only present as impurities in the spiked OTC formulation as they declined in concentration from the start of the experiment. In the present project, twenty materials (e.g., polyhydroxybutyrate-hydroxyvalerate, polycaprolactone, cellulose acetate, polyacticacid, polyethylene), representing varied biodegradability levels were studied. An aerobic respirometric test, based on the CEN Draft, was setup. The biodegradability of each plastic film was evaluated by measuring the percentage of carbon converted into CO2 during 35 days. The values of the CO2 production were plotted versus days as a cumulative function. In order to reduce its number of points, the cumulative curve was modeled using a sigmoïd function (Hill sigmoïd). test showed that the biodegradation curve was more accurately fitted with the model than the previous one. Three kinetic parameters were determined by this Hill model: one represents the maximal percentage of carbon converted into CO2, the second the half-life time in days of the degrading part of the material and the third one the curve radius.In addition, the following analyses were carried out on each sample: elemental analysis, thickness, hydrophobicity and surface free energy measurements. In order to compress the information and to keep only relevant pieces, these parameters were submitted to a Principal Component Analysis. PCA found linear combinations of variables that describe major trends in the data. The two principal components which separate groups of materials were closely related to a chemical and a physical axis respectively. Materials showing a high biodegradability were related to high oxygen (and nitrogen) contents and low hydrophobicity: Material thickness did not influence the likeliness to biodegradability described by the maximum biodegradation rate. Urban floods from thunderstorms cause severe problems in Metro Manila due to road traffic. Using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-derived topography, flood simulations and anecdotal reports, the root of surface flood problems in Metro Manila is identified. Majority of flood-prone areas are along the intersection of creeks and streets located in topographic lows. When creeks overflow or when rapidly accumulated street flood does not drain fast enough to the nearest stream channel, the intersecting road also gets flooded. Possible solutions include the elevation of roads or construction of well-designed drainage structures leading to the creeks. Proposed solutions to the flood problem of Metro Manila may avoid paralyzing traffic problems due to short-lived rain events, which according to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) cost the Philippine economy 2.4 billion pesos/day. 相似文献
