Data are reported on a number of controlled and uncontrolled sources from various metal decorating operations. Emission levels are related to process variables such as ink coverage, coater speed, sheet size, and applied coating film weight. Results are presented depicting variation of organic emission levels from a coating process line with elapsed process time. For controlled sources employing either catalytic or thermal incineration, conversion efficiencies are reported as a function of temperature. Operational curves are presented for each control system studied indicating the dependence of carbon dioxide, NOx, and organic output on incineration temperatures.  相似文献

Phenoxyacetic and benzoic acid herbicides are widely used agricultural, commercial, and domestic pesticides. As a result of high water solubility, mobility, and persistence, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), methylchlorophenoxypropionic acid (mecoprop), and 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (dicamba) have been detected in surface and waste waters across Canada. As current municipal wastewater treatment plants do not specifically address chronic, trace levels of contaminants like pesticides, an urgent need exists for an efficient, environmentally friendly means of breaking down these toxic herbicides. A commercially available herbicide mix, WeedEx, containing 2,4-D, mecoprop, and dicamba, was subjected to treatment using membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology. The three herbicides, in simulated wastewater with a chemical oxygen demand of 745 mg/L, were introduced to the MBR at concentrations ranging from 300 μg/L to 3.5 mg/L. Herbicides and biodegradation products were extracted from MBR effluent using solid-phase extraction followed by detection using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. 2,4-D was reduced by more than 99.0 % within 12 days. Mecoprop and dicamba were more persistent and reduced by 69.0 and 75.4 %, respectively, after 112 days of treatment. Half-lives of 2,4-D, mecoprop and dicamba during the treatment were determined to be 1.9, 10.5, and 28.3 days, respectively. Important water quality parameters of the effluent such as dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, chemical oxygen demand, etc. were measured daily. MBR was demonstrated to be an environmentally friendly, compact, and efficient method for the treatment of toxic phenoxyacetic and benzoic acid herbicides.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A series of twelve intensively monitored 1-hr CO dispersion studies were conducted near Davis, CA, in winter 1996. The experimental equipment included twelve CO sampling ports at elevations up to 50 m, three sonic anemometers, a tethersonde station, aircraft measurements of wind and temperature profile aloft, and a variety of conventional meteorological equipment. The study was designed to explore the role of vehicular exhaust buoyancy during worst-case meteorological conditions, such as low winds oriented in near-parallel alignment with the road during a surface-based nocturnal inversion. From the study, field estimates of the CO emission factor (EF) from a California vehicle fleet were computed using two different methods. The analysis suggests that the CT-EMFAC/ EMFAC (EMission FACtor) models currently used to conduct federal conformity modeling significantly overpredict CO emissions for high-speed, free-flowing traffic on California highways.  相似文献

Since the late 1980s, spider mite pests have caused serious damage to many moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forests in China’s Fujian province. The culms of this plant are an essential component of the building and handicraft industries, and the shoots are a prized food item in many Asian countries. Furthermore, bamboo forests play an important soil conservation role in mountainous areas. We examined pest mite outbreaks in several moso bamboo plantations in Fujian, and could show that a change in cultivation style from polyculture (a kind of mixed forest) to monoculture (all plants other than bamboo were removed) was primarily responsible for the local extinction of an important predaceous mite species. This phenomenon is due to the periodic shedding of leaves by the bamboo, which forces the predator mites occurring on bamboo to switch to prey mite species that occur on other plants. We then tried to elucidate the factors that resulted from such a cultivation change. Adopting a computer simulation approach, we could successfully show that at least two plants, moso bamboo and Chinese silvergrass, are necessary to maintain stable predator–prey interactions in moso forests. That is, systems consisting of one common predator and two host-specific pest mites on different host plant species frequently became stable when the pest mites were at low density. This finding indicates clearly that bio-diversity, even when it consists of only two plants and three mite species as in this study, is necessary for the sustainable regulation of large-scale forests, such as moso bamboo plantations.  相似文献

Abstract: Since 1900, 123 freshwater animal species have been recorded as extinct in North America. Hundreds of additional species of fishes, mollusks, crayfishes, and amphibians are considered imperiled. Using an exponential decay model, we derived recent and future extinction rates for North American freshwater fauna that are five times higher than those for terrestrial fauna. Assuming that imperiled freshwater species will not survive throughout the next century, our model projects a future extinction rate of 4% per decade, which suggests that North America's temperate freshwater ecosystems are being depleted of species as rapidly as tropical forests.  相似文献

Conservation science is a morally motivated field, with implicit and explicit values built into its practice. As such, conservationists must engage with conservation ethics to interrogate underlying values. We examine cutting-edge ecological science and contemporary ethics to revisit two conservation norms that have become dogmatic in the field: ecological collectives, but not individual animals, are valuable and anthropomorphism should be staunchly avoided. Emerging studies demonstrate that individuals and their intraspecific variation can be instrumentally valuable for conservation science, and there is an emerging consensus within environmental philosophy around the moral worth of individuals. Thus, we suggest conservation science should explicitly recognize the value of individuals. We also argue that avoiding anthropomorphism is detrimental to conservation because critical anthropomorphism enables a more nuanced scientific approach—allowing conservationists to ask enlightened questions with creativity and compassion. We provide evidence that both dogmatic norms are scientifically and morally outdated and propose new normative values to push conservation towards more robust science and ethical practice.  相似文献

This article describes an airborne γ survey of a 7 × 5 km region around the rehabilitated Nabarlek uranium mine in northern Australia. An unusually tight line spacing (100 m) and low aircraft height (50 m) were used, enabling the survey to distinguish man-made structures such as ponds and accommodation areas, as well as creek lines. Positive correlations between airborne data and ground-based readings enabled an estimation of the average absorbed dose rate arising from terrestrial γ radiation over large areas of the site to be derived. For the fenced minesite area this estimate was 0.31 μ Gy hr− 1. The airborne survey data were found to be invaluable in helping to plan further ground-level investigations and showed promise as an assessment tool for rehabilitated minesites.  相似文献

Sustainable management of fisheries is often compromised by management delaying implementation of regulations that reduce harvest, in order to maintain higher catches in the short-term. Decreases or increases in fish population growth rate driven by environmental change, including ecosystem and climate change, affect the harvest that can be taken sustainably. If not acted on rapidly, environmental change could result in unsustainable fishing or missed opportunity for higher catches. Using simulation models of harvested fish populations influenced by environmental change, we explore how long fisheries managers can afford to wait before changing harvest regulations in response to changes in population growth. If environmental change causes population declines, delays greater than five years increase the probability of population collapse. Species with fast and highly variable population growth rates are more susceptible to collapse under delays and should be a priority for revised management where delays occur. Generally, the long-term cost of delay, in terms of lost fishing opportunity, exceeds the short-term benefits of overfishing. Lowering harvest limits and monitoring for environmental change can alleviate the impact of delays; however, these measures may be more costly than reducing delays. We recommend that management systems that allow rapid responses to population growth changes be enacted for fisheries management to adapt to ecosystem and climate change.  相似文献
