In the context of urban agriculture, where soils are frequently contaminated with metal(loid)s (TM), we studied the influence of vermicompost amendments on symbiotic fungal communities associated with plants grown in two metal-rich soils. Leek (Allium porrum L.) plants were grown with or without vermicompost in two metal-rich soils characterized by either geogenic or anthropogenic TM sources, to assess the influence of pollutant origin on soil-plant transfer. Fungal communities associated with the leek roots were identified by high throughput Illumina MiSeq and TM contents were measured using mass spectrometry. Vermicompost addition led to a dramatic change in the fungal community with a loss of diversity in the two tested soils. This effect could partially explain the changes in metal transfer at the soil-AMF-plant interface. Our results suggest being careful while using composts when growing edibles in contaminated soils. More generally, this study highlights the need for further research in the field of fungal communities to refine practical recommendations to gardeners.
The activity and surface sediment displacement by the terebellid polychaete Eupolymnia nebulosa were monitored, using new image acquisition and image analysis procedures. We used a video sensor mounted on a motorized
table, to acquire adjacent images of the whole studied aquarium within about 2 s. These images were then grouped within a
composite image acquired every 15 s. Consecutive composite images were compared to infer activity and surface sediment displacement.
This procedure proved efficient for E. nebulosa as indicated by (1) the continuity of the tentacles within composite images, and (2) the direct comparison of images and
detected activities. There were important temporal changes in the relative importance of the three main types of activity:
feeding, tube-building and (both partial and total) emergence from the tube, accounting, respectively, for 75, 15 and 10%
of the entire experiment duration. Activity intensity (cm2 min-1) was assessed through the surface of pixels with grey levels differing by more than 20 (on a 0–255 scale) between two consecutive
images. Feeding was associated with low activity intensity, whereas tube-building and emergence from the tubes were associated
with high activity intensities. Surface sediment displacement mostly resulted from tentacle activity both during feeding and
tube-building and was almost zero when worms emerged from their tube. We used our experimental set up to assess spatial changes
in activity intensity and particle displacements along the tentacles. Most of the activity occurred within the first 4–6 cm
from the tube aperture. Particle loss during their transfer along the tentacles preferentially affected larger particles as
postulated by the model of particle selection and transport in tentaculate deposit-feeders. Moreover, the speed of the particles
along the tentacles correlated negatively with their size. This contributed to increase in the residence time of larger particles
on the tentacles and thus, to further enhance their probability of being lost. The size distributions of particles during
feeding and tube-building did not differ significantly although visual observations confirmed the preferential use of larger
particles for tube-building. This suggests the existence of a sorting step occurring elsewhere than on the tentacles as already

The quality of cultivated consumed vegetables in relation to environmental pollution is a crucial issue for urban and peri-urban areas, which host the majority of people at the global scale. In order to evaluate the fate of metals in urban soil–plant–atmosphere systems and their consequences on human exposure, a field study was conducted at two different sites near a waste incinerator (site A) and a highway (site B). Metal concentrations were measured in the soil, settled atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and vegetables. A risk assessment was performed using both total and bioaccessible metal concentrations in vegetables. Total metal concentrations in PM were (mg kg?1): (site A) 417 Cr, 354 Cu, 931 Zn, 6.3 Cd and 168 Pb; (site B) 145 Cr, 444 Cu, 3289 Zn, 2.9 Cd and 396 Pb. Several total soil Cd and Pb concentrations exceeded China’s Environmental Quality Standards. At both sites, there was significant metal enrichment from the atmosphere to the leafy vegetables (correlation between Pb concentrations in PM and leaves: r = 0.52, p < 0.05) which depended on the plant species. Total Cr, Cd and Pb concentrations in vegetables were therefore above or just under the maximum limit levels for foodstuffs according to Chinese and European Commission regulations. High metal bioaccessibility in the vegetables (60–79 %, with maximum value for Cd) was also observed. The bioaccessible hazard index was only above 1 for site B, due to moderate Pb and Cd pollution from the highway. In contrast, site A was considered as relatively safe for urban agriculture. 相似文献
Harbour development along the low-lying coastline of northern France necessitated the construction of a seaport protruding into the sea. The extension of the port of Dunkirk resulted in the creation of an artificial shoreline consisting of a sea dike fronted by a beach, connected to a jetty protecting the seaport access. This study illustrates how harbour infrastructure can give rise to new kinds of aeolian landforms: e.g. the spontaneous initiation of aeolian dunes on a seaport dike resulting in specific dune types. However, this coastal dune development induced unexpected sand invasion of harbour infrastructure. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of various types of windbreaks on a dike as a means of limiting sand drift and solving sand invasion problems. Seven experimental fences installed in the eastern part of the dike were monitored over an 11 month period. The experimental fences tested in this study demonstrated their effectiveness on an asphalt coated dike. Over the whole survey period, the most efficient fences were those installed close to a sand source, at the beach-dike limit. These experiments will aid the Port of Dunkirk in building a management plan for its shoreline, which is being designed in order to preserve the diversity of landscapes, and to control sand invasion which necessitates costly sand removal operations. 相似文献
This work focuses on assessing the impact of two types of waste pretreatment: addition of bottom ashes and aerobic pretreatment on both the onset and kinetics of methanogenesis and the evolution of different parameters in the leachate. It also studies the correlation between methane production and the different parameters measured in the leachate produced. A total of six 68-L pilots were thus used with fresh municipal solid waste (MSW) shredded to a 40-mm size. After 14months of landfilling, the control has produced less than 10NLkg(-1)DM, which corresponds to around 7% of its biochemical methane potential (BMP). Nevertheless, on one hand for aerobically pretreated waste, the lag phase before the onset of methanogenesis is significantly reduced to 0.9month compared to more than 1year for the control. In addition to that, on average 110NLkg(-1)DM (90% of the BMP) is produced within around 6.5months. On the other hand, the waste with added bottom ash shows a slight improvement of the lag phase over the control for one of the duplicate: 6.1months of lag phase. At this stage, on average of 26NLkg(-1)DM waste are detected (22% of the BMP) no final conclusion concerning the impact of bottom ashes could be made. The data obtained for the leachate parameters agrees with the observations on methane production. Statistical correlation study shows that the two components of the corrected PCA interpret 76% of the variability of the data: SUVA (specific UV absorbance at 254nm) and HPI(*) (% of hydrophilic compounds) are identified as interesting parameters for following up the biodegradation in landfill conditions. 相似文献
Photocatalytic reactions using titanium dioxide are of great interest due to their possible applications to solar energy storage and detoxification of wastewater. However, TiO2 has usually given a very poor selectivity. Here we show that, using binary mixtures, it is possible to selectively degrade one molecular substance without any concentration change of another substance. We have studied the influence of the pH and TiO2 concentration on the selectivity of the degradation of benzamide and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. With appropriate modifications of both parameters, the selectivity can be improved. 相似文献
New dental remains of listriodont suids are described from the lower member of the early to middle Miocene Vihowa Formation
of the Bugti Hills, Pakistan. The material is homogeneous in terms of morphology and dimensions and referred as a whole to
Listriodon guptai Pilgrim, 1926. This species is also mentioned in coeval deposits of the Zinda Pir Dome, Pakistan, dating back to ca. 19 Ma.
The early occurrence of an advanced listriodont in Pakistan constrains the age of acquisition of several characters correlated
to lophodonty within Listriodontini, and raises major questions about the early history of the Old World Listriodontinae.
Strong morphological similarity between Listriodon guptai and the African species Listriodon akatikubas found in the late early Miocene of Maboko (Kenya, ca. 16.5 Ma) suggests that this latter is most probably a migrant originating

During modern birds history, climatic and environmental conditions have evolved on wide scales. In a continuously changing
world, landbirds annual migrations emerged and developed. However, models accounting for the origins of these avian migrations
were formulated with static ecogeographic perspectives. Here I reviewed Cenozoic paleoclimatic and paleontological data relative
to the palearctic–paleotropical long distance (LD) migration system. This led to propose a new model for the origin of LD
migrations, the ‘shifting home’ model (SHM). It is based on a dynamic perspective of climate evolution and may apply to the
origins of most modern migrations. Non-migrant tropical African bird taxa were present at European latitudes during most of
the Cenozoic. Their distribution limits shifted progressively toward modern tropical latitudes during periods of global cooling
and increasing seasonality. In parallel, decreasing winter temperatures in the western Palearctic drove shifts of population
winter ranges toward the equator. I propose that this induced the emergence of most short distance migrations, and in turn
LD migrations. This model reconciliates ecologically tropical ancestry of most LD migrants with predominant winter range shifts,
in accordance with requirements for heritable homing. In addition, it is more parsimonious than other non-exclusive models.
Greater intrinsic plasticity of winter ranges implied by the SHM is supported by recently observed impacts of the present
global warming on migrating birds. This may induce particular threats to some LD migrants. The ancestral, breeding homes of
LD migrants were not ‘northern’ or ‘southern’ but shifted across high and middle latitudes while migrations emerged through
winter range shifts themselves.

Impact of ultrasonication(ULS) and ultrasonication–ozonation(ULS-Ozone) pre-treatment on the anaerobic digestibility of sewage sludge was investigated with semi-continuous anaerobic reactors at solid retention time(SRT) of 10 and 20 days. The control, ULS and ULS-Ozone reactors produced 256, 309 and 348 m L biogas/g CODfedand the volatile solid(VS) removals were 35.6%, 38.3% and 42.1%, respectively at SRT of 10 days. At SRT of20 days, the biogas yields reached 313, 337 and 393 m L biogas/g CODfedand the VS removal rates were 37.3%, 40.9% and 45.3% in the control, ULS and ULS-Ozone reactors, respectively.ULS-Ozone pre-treatment increased the residual organic amount in the digested sludge.These soluble residual organics were found to contain macromolecules with molecular weights(MW) larger than 500 k Da and smaller polymeric products with MW around 19.4and 7.7 k Da. These compounds were further characterized to be humic acid-like substances with fluorescent spectroscopy analysis. 相似文献
