In this study a combined anaerobic/aerobic full-scale treatment plant designed for the treatment of the source-separated organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was monitored over a period of one year. During this period, full information was collected about the waste input material, the biogas production, the main rejects and the compost characteristics. The plant includes mechanical pre-treatment, dry thermophilic anaerobic digestion, tunnel composting system and a curing phase to produce compost. To perform the monitoring of the entire plant and the individual steps, traditional chemical methods were used but they present important limitations in determining the critical points and the efficiency of the stabilization of the organic matter. Respiration indices (dynamic and cumulative) allowed for the quantitative calculation of the efficiency of each treatment unit. The mass balance was calculated and expressed in terms of Mgy(-1) of wet (total) matter, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Results show that during the pre-treatment step about 32% of the initial wet matter is rejected without any treatment. This also reduces the biodegradability of the organic matter that continues to the treatment process. About 50% of the initial nitrogen and 86.4% of the initial phosphorus are found in the final compost. The final compost also achieves a high level of stabilization with a dynamic respiration index of 0.3±0.1g O(2) per kg of total solids per hour, which implies a reduction of 93% from that of the raw OFMSW, without considering the losses of biodegradable organic matter in the refuse (32% of the total input). The results of a prospective series of 1580 chorionic villus sampling (CVS) procedures using biopsy forceps are presented. Most of the procedures (1442), including 11 sets of twins, were performed by the transcervical approach (TC-CVS), using a curved-shank thin forceps, and 138 by the transabdominal approach (TA-CVS), using a trocar-guided straight thin forceps. The mean gestational age for TC-CVS was 10.9 weeks, and in 233 cases (16 per cent) the procedure was carried out between the 12th and 14th weeks. The mean gestational age for TA-CVS was 16.7 weeks. The major indication for CVS was advanced maternal age (92.7 per cent in the TC and 91.8 per cent in the TA approach), and indications for abnormal ultrasound findings were more common in the TA approach (4.5 per cent) than in TC-CVS (0.07 per cent). Although sampling was apparently accomplished in all the procedures, in 3.1 per cent of the TC-CVS and 2.2 per cent of TA-CVS procedures, the samples were less than 1 mg after dissection. A cytogenic report was obtained in 96.1 per cent of the TC-CVS and 90.6 per cent of the TA-CVS. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) was measured before and after TC-CVS and the post-CVS MSAFP was positively correlated with the sample weight. Second-trimester amniocentesis following CVS was required in 5.2 per cent (TC-CVS) and 6.5 per cent (TA-CVS), due to the failure to obtain a cytogenetic report or diagnostic confirmation. The follow-up to the 20th week was 100 per cent by ultrasound scan, and 88.6 per cent from the 21st week to 1 week after delivery. Fetal loss rates within 2 weeks of the procedure were 1.7 per cent (TC-CVS) and 0.8 per cent (TA-CVS) and total fetal loss accumulated to 1 week after delivery was 4.6 per cent (TC-CVS) and 5.9 per cent (TA-CVS). Structural changes in anatase phase in four TiO(2) photocatalysts with annealing at high temperatures were followed by evaluating crystallite size and lattice strain of anatase phase separately and measuring the content of anatase. The rate constant k for the decomposition of methylene blue in its aqueous solution under UV irradiation was determined as a measure of photocatalytic activity. Marked dependences in crystallinity improvement, i.e., the growth of crystallite and the decrease in lattice strain, and in phase transformation from anatase to rutile phases of TiO(2) on annealing temperature was observed above 500 degrees C, depending on starting photocatalysts used. The phase transformation to rutile started after reaching of crystallite size to about 32 nm and of lattice strain to about 0.5 x 10(-3). Rate constant k was found to depend on both crystallite size and lattice strain of anatase; it increased with increasing crystallite size up to about 32 nm and decreasing lattice strain down to about 0.5 x 10(-3). Further increase in crystallite size and decrease in lattice strain induced the decrease in rate constant k, mainly due to the partial transformation of anatase to rutile. The present results showed that the activity of the photocatalysts was possible to be improved by annealing at a high temperature, by selecting an optimal condition of annealing for getting a high crystallinity in anatase phase and no phase transformation to rutile phase. 相似文献

It is well established that an optimal aerobic and anaerobic microbial metabolism is achieved with a C/N ratio between 20 and 30. Most studies are currently based on chemically-measured carbon and nitrogen contents. However, some organic wastes can be composed of recalcitrant carbon fractions that are not bioavailable. To know the biodegradable C/N ratio, two different methods to determine the aerobic and anaerobic biodegradable organic carbon (BOCAE and BOCAN) are proposed and used to analyze a wide variety of different organic samples. In general, raw wastes and digested products have more amount of BOCAE. On the contrast, the samples collected after an aerobic treatment have higher content of BOCAN. In any case, all the BOC fractions are lower than the total organic carbon (TOC). Therefore, the C/N ratios based on BOC are always lower than the total C/N ratio based on the TOC measure. The knowledge of the real bioavailable C/N ratio is crucial for the biological treatments of organic materials. To reduce the test time necessary for BOC determination, the values of BOC for all the samples obtained at different times were compared and correlated with the final BOC. A method that allows for the determination of BOCAE in 4 d is proposed. In relation to the anaerobic assay, the biogas potential calculated after 21 and 50 d was positively correlated with the final potential defined after 100 d of assay. 相似文献

A few analytical methods of elemental carbon determination are described. The purpose of the work is to choose the best method for determination of its content in dust suspended in air in industrial regions. The reflectance and chromatographic methods were investigated. It was shown that the reflectance methods could be used only when the particle size and form of elemental carbons constant. The chromatographic method, which includes the step of combustion of the sample in oxygen and chromatographic determination of evolved CO2 is recommended, since it is independent of the form of carbon. Ammonia emissions were quantified for the laboratory-scale composting of three typical organic wastes with medium nitrogen content: organic fraction of municipal solid wastes, raw sludge and anaerobically digested sludge; and the composting of two wastes with high nitrogen content: animal by-products from slaughterhouses and partially hydrolysed hair from the leather industry. All the wastes were mixed with the proper amount of bulking agent. Ammonia emitted in the composting of the five wastes investigated revealed a strong dependence on temperature, with a distinct pattern found in ammonia emissions for each waste in the thermophilic first stage of composting (exponential increase of ammonia emitted when increasing temperature) than that of the mesophilic final stage (linear increase of ammonia emissions when increasing temperature). As composting needs high temperatures to ensure the sanitisation of compost and ammonia emissions are one of the main environmental impacts associated to composting and responsible for obtaining compost with a low agronomical quality, it is proposed that sanitisation is conducted after the first stage in large-scale composting facilities by a proper temperature control. Blubber of free-ranging common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) from the northwestern coast of Spain (Atlantic), sampled in 1984 and 1996, and of common dolphins entangled in fishing nets in the southwestern Mediterranean, sampled during 1992 1994, was analysed for organochlorine pollutants. In the Atlantic, concentration of all pollutants was significantly higher in males than in females. The overall tPCB/tDDT ratio in this area was 3.35, which indicates a predominance of industrial inputs over those associated with agriculture. Individuals sampled in 1996 showed significantly lower DDT concentrations but a higher ppDDE/tDDT ratio than those sampled in 1984, which reflects the aging of the environmental load. In the same period, tPCB concentration remained constant and, as a consequence, the tPCB/tDDT ratio more than doubled. In the Mediterranean, the reduced sample size of adult individuals precluded proper statistical investigation of sex-related variation. The overall tPCB/tDDT ratio was 1.12, suggesting a higher contribution of pollutants of agricultural origin. Individuals had significantly higher levels of all DDT forms and a higher ppDDE/tDDT ratio than their counterparts from the Atlantic, but similar PCB concentrations. However, the relative frequency of the different congeners in relation to the total PCB load was different in the two areas. This indicates that the two populations do not mix, at least in the short- or medium-term. Organochlorine levels in both areas are at the mid to low end of the range of concentrations detected in other common dolphin populations and in that of other Delphinidae species from the same region. Although the impact of the organochlorine concentrations on the common dolphin populations surveyed cannot be assessed, it is considered unlikely that they have played a significant role in the decline that the species has suffered in recent decades in the western Mediterranean. 相似文献
