Infection by Bonamia ostreae has caused extensive mortalities of oysters Ostrea edulis through European and United States coasts for at least 25 years. The development of a bonamiosis-resistant strain seems a promising strategy to fight against the disease. As a first step, evaluation of variability in productive traits and disease susceptibility of European populations was performed to identify favourable oyster populations with which to start selective breeding in Galicia (NW Spain). Oysters taken from Greece, Ireland, Ortigueira (Galicia) and Coroso (Galicia) were used as brood stock, and 19 seed families were produced (4–5 families from each origin). The oyster families were used to assess variability through on-growing in an area of the Ría de Arousa heavily affected by bonamiosis. Results showed significant differences in growth, mortality and susceptibility to bonamiosis and other diseases, both between origins and between families under origins. Bonamiosis was associated with mortality in the late stage of oyster on-growing. Indications of natural selection of bonamiosis less-susceptible oysters due to the long exposure of the Ortigueira population to bonamiosis were found. Other symbionts and pathological conditions were detected, of which herpes-like viral infections and disseminated neoplasia could also cause mortality. An index of the overall incidence of pathological conditions (OIPC) was estimated for each family. A significant correlation between the OIPC and the cumulative mortality of the families was noted. On average, oysters from autochthonous origins showed better performance. The results obtained with the best-performing families suggest that the profitability of oyster farming in Galicia would improve, even under bonamiosis pressure, by using appropriate oyster spat.Communicated by S.A. The effect of Kraft black liquor on the lipid peroxidation of rat homogenates was examined. The lipid peroxidation of homogenates from different organs (kidney, brain, lung, and liver) was induced by Fenton's reagent. The products of lipid peroxidation, lipid hydroperoxides and TBARS were measured by FOX method and TBA assay, respectively. It was found that black liquor significantly reduced the concentration of TBARS, but not the concentration of lipid hydroperoxides. This inhibition was directly proportional to the concentration of Kraft black liquor and the incubation temperature. Conclusively, the black liquor from pulp and paper industry exhibited an antioxidant activity. 相似文献
The abundance of trophic sources on the intertidal zone is discontinuous and their supply can vary both in a predictable or
unpredictable way. The Mediterranean semi-terrestrial crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus, is known, as adult, to entirely rely on the intertidal trophic sources, and, consequently, it faces the fluctuations of
nutritional sources and quality. To clarify the relationships between the feeding habits of an Italian population of P. marmoratus and the temporal variation of its food sources, we carried out a 2-year sampling protocol. Data on seasonal variation in
composition of intertidal food item assemblages, on the average content in N and C of the commonest algae, on seasonal changes
in crabs feeding habits were collected and compared using a suite of multivariate and univariate techniques. Results showed
that P. marmoratus takes advantage of the recruitment phase of the most common invertebrates, affecting and controlling the abundance even of
those species whose adults are out of its reach. It can act both as a herbivore, and as a carnivore that shifts between bivalves,
more abundant in spring/summer, and the periwinkle Melaraphe neritoides, during winter. In conclusion, we provide evidences on the food choice of this common rocky shore species, which is very
plastic and capable of relying on many trophic sources, possibly influencing the abundance and/or the population structure
of a number of intertidal populations. 相似文献
Mass wasting processes, like slope failures, on the margins of dam reservoirs, lakes, bays and oceans may generate large water
waves that can produce disasters due to flooding over the banks, run up along the shoreline and overtopping dam crests. Therefore,
the study of slope failures, the subsequent generation of impulse waves and their consequences are of paramount importance
for safety. In this paper the generation and propagation of water waves in reservoirs induced by landslides and their impact
on banks were investigated by means of a laboratory study carried out at University of Coimbra wave channel, in a flume measuring
12.0 m × 1.5 m × 1.0 m (L × H × W), where two banks with variable slope were placed. The study considered the sliding
of calcareous blocks over a sliding slope bank into the reservoir, the generation of impulse waves, their propagation in the
reservoir and their impact on the downstream bank. A number of waves were generated by different fallings of calcareous blocks,
considering different volumes, sliding slopes, initial positions and reservoir depths. All fallings were recorded by video-camera
and the results were processed afterwards to obtain the time history of the falling. The water surface variations due to transient
waves were measured at five gauges placed between the banks. The waves overtopping and breaking on the downstream bank were
also filmed using a video camera, and the hydrodynamic forces on this bank were also measured using four pressure transducers. 相似文献
Sex allocation theory predicts phenotypic adjustments by individuals in their investments into the male and female reproductive function in response to environmental conditions. I tested for phenotypically plastic shifts in sex allocation in a protandric simultaneous hermaphrodite, in which individuals mature and reproduce as males first, and later in life, as simultaneous hermaphrodites. I predicted that initially maturing males should adjust the timing of maturation as hermaphrodites according to male mating opportunities mediated by population size of hermaphrodites. In a first experiment, males maintained with only one hermaphrodite reduced the time they spent as males in comparison to males maintained with no conspecifics, presumably because total reproductive output is maximized by two individuals being simultaneous hermaphrodites when the mating system is a pair. Conversely, males maintained in groups with two or more hermaphrodites increased the time they spent as males in comparison to single males. This delay in maturation was not an effect of resource depletion with increasing shrimp density because the growth rate of males did not differ among most of the experimental treatments. One hypothesis to explain this social mediation of sex allocation is that the smaller males are more successful in mating as males than are the larger hermaphrodites: it will pay reproductively for males to delay maturation as hermaphrodites in large but not in small groups. In agreement with this notion, a second experiment demonstrated that smaller males were four times more successful than were larger hermaphrodites in inseminating shrimps reproducing as females. The informative cue that males may use to perceive different group sizes deserves further attention. 相似文献
Production rates, chlorophyll concentrations and general composition of periphytic diatom communities growing on glass slides
were studied in relation to environmental parameters during one seasonal cycle in the Bay of Paranaguá, southern Brazil. Slides
were routinely submersed at 1, 2 and 3 m depth and recovered weekly for microscopic examinations, analyses of chlorophyll,
cell counts and in situ photosynthetic incubations using the Winkler titration method. Water samples were also collected at
surface and bottom layers for determinations of temperature, salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll in the water. The periphytic
community was mainly formed by epipelic and epipsammic species, dominated by Navicula phyllepta, Cylindrotheca closterium, Navicula spp. and Amphora sp. Weekly chlorophyll a and cell accumulations on slides varied from <1–32 mg m−2 and up to 31 × 108 cells m−2, respectively. Photosynthetic rates varied from <1 to 35 mg oxygen mg chlorophyll a−1 h−1, with higher values in summer. Daily production varied from 5 to 3,600 mg oxygen m−2 day−1 (<0.01–1.4 g carbon m−2 day−1). Multiple regression analysis revealed that vertical differences in light conditions and grazing pressure jointly affected
the influence of temperature on the seasonal patterns of cell densities and chlorophyll concentrations according to depth.

In Venezuela, large-scale shrimp farming began in the 1980s. By 1987, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARNR)
had received 14 proposals for approval. A developer illegally started the construction of ponds at the Píritu Lagoon in the
State of Anzoátegui before the authorization process was completed. This action triggered a land-use conflict. This study
identifies the causes for public protest and determines the consequences of this conflict for land-use management. The results
show that public protest was based on the impacts of the partial construction of ponds. These impacts were related to direct
removal of wetlands, interruption of natural patterns of surface flows, and alteration of feeding grounds of some bird species
with migratory status. Consequences were identified in relation to the role that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) play
in land-use conflicts and the actions that MARNR could take in the future to prevent and solve similar situations. 相似文献
Objective: Traffic crashes result in a loss of life but also impact the quality of life and productivity of crash survivors. Given the importance of traffic crash outcomes, the issue has received attention from researchers and practitioners as well as government institutions, such as the European Commission (EC). Thus, to obtain detailed information on the injury type and severity of crash victims, hospital data have been proposed for use alongside police crash records. A new injury severity classification based on hospital data, called the maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS), was developed and recently adopted by the EC. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the factors that affect injury severity as classified by the MAIS score.
Method: In this study, the MAIS score was derived from the International Classification of Diseases. The European Union adopted an MAIS score equal to or greater than 3 as the definition for a serious traffic crash injury. Gains are expected from using both police and hospital data because the injury severities of the victims are detailed by medical staff and the characteristics of the crash and the site of its occurrence are also provided. The data were obtained by linking police and hospital data sets from the Porto metropolitan area of Portugal over a 6-year period (2006–2011). A mixed logit model was used to understand the factors that contribute to the injury severity of traffic victims and to explore the impact of these factors on injury severity. A random parameter approach offers methodological flexibility to capture individual-specific heterogeneity. Additionally, to understand the importance of using a reliable injury severity scale, we compared MAIS with length of hospital stay (LHS), a classification used by several countries, including Portugal, to officially report injury severity. To do so, the same statistical technique was applied using the same variables to analyze their impact on the injury severity classified according to LHS.
Results: This study showed the impact of variables, such as the presence of blood alcohol, the use of protection devices, the type of crash, and the site characteristics, on the injury severity classified according to the MAIS score. Additionally, the sex and age of the victims were analyzed as risk factors, showing that elderly and male road users are highly associated with MAIS 3+ injuries. The comparison between the marginal effects of the variables estimated by the MAIS and LHS models showed significant differences. In addition to the differences in the magnitude of impact of each variable, we found that the impact of the road environment variable was dependent on the injury severity classification.
Conclusions: The differences in the effects of risk factors between the classifications highlight the importance of using a reliable classification of injury severity. Additionally, the relationship between LHS and MAIS levels is quite different among countries, supporting the previous conclusion that bias is expected in the assessment of risk factors if an injury severity classification other than MAIS is used. 相似文献
