Spatial distribution of the pomacentrids on Singapore reefs was assessed visually, while temporal change was studied within permanent quadrats established on a patch reef between 4 Jul and 30 Nov 1989. Partitioning of space, both horizontally and vertically, on the reef was observed in 15 species. The population of territorial damselfishes on the reef flat was less stable than on the reef slope over time, due to the seasonal occurrence of dense stands of the brown macroalgae, Sargassum. Space was found to be a limiting factor at the reef flat due to the high density of pomacentrids found there. Food resource was the limiting factor on the reef slope, where low light intensity due to sedimentation and lack of suitable substrate inhibited turf algal growth. Multi-specific recruitment of juveniles occurred in April and between mid-October and early November.  相似文献

The diets of 2 ecologically similar deposit-feeding gastropods (Batillaria attramentaria and Cerithidea california) are described from 3 salt marsh localities in central California, USA. Gut contents revealed high similarity in dietary composition and a predominance of benthic diatoms. Sympatric and allopatric populations of the gastropods did not differ in diet. In both species, diatom food size increased with snail length with large B. attramentaria selecting longer diatom sizes than large C. californica. Size distributions of B. attramentaria differed in sympatric and allopatric populations. In sympatric populations, snail size classes which exhibited the greatest amounts of overlap in diatom size did not occur together. Effects of size-specific behavioral interactions in the gastropods may explain these differences.  相似文献

The in vivo methylating capability of the organophosphorus insecticide tetrachlorvinphos, assayed by the formation of 7-methyl-guanine in mouse liver, was investigated. Following intraperitoneal injection of male mice with different doses of the 14C-insecticide, labelled at the OCH3 groups, the total and specific radioactivity of nucleic acids and protein were determined. The 14C-labelling in the isolated macromolecules reached its maximum 24 hours following administration of the insecticide. Analysis of the acid hydrolysate of DNA and of RNA on Dowex-50 WX-12 revealed the presence of (7-14C) methylguanine. At maximum 14C-labelling, the amount of radioactive 7-MeGu, calculated as fraction of total dose, was around 9 X 10(-5) and 39 X 10(-5) for DNA and RNA, respectively.  相似文献

Excessive soil losses due to erosion or lateral displacement by machinery impair productivity. Some soil loss is tolerable, but not so much that plant productivity diminishes. Thus productivity is the dominant concern in determining soil-loss tolerance. The effects of soil loss on productivity, however, are difficult to determine. Therefore, two alternatives are discussed for determining the limits of soil loss, or soil-loss tolerance. These alternatives are the maintenance of soil organic matter and, for shallow and moderately deep soils, the maintenance of soil depth. They are not new strategies, but our rapidly increasing knowledge of the dynamics of soil organic matter and the rates of soil formation from bedrock or consolidated sediments warrants the reconsideration of these alternatives. Reductions in either soil organic matter or the depth of shallow or moderately deep soils will lead to declining productivity. Soil organic matter, considered to be a surrogate for productivity, is much easier to monitor than is productivity. Also, there are many computer models for predicting the effects of management on soil organic matter. Recently compiled data on rates of soil formation suggest that soil losses of 1 t/a (2.24 Mg/ha yr) are greater than the rate of replenishment by the weathering of lithic or paralithic material in all but very wet climates.  相似文献

Information on the type and quantity of industrial pollutants from major land-based sources entering the marine environment through direct coastal discharges or indirectly through rivers, as well as on the present status of industrial waste management (treatment and disposal) practices, are provided for the West African region. Most of the data utilized in this analysis were collected by six UNIDO experts who visited the eighteen countries of the West African region during the period of January through August 1980. Industrial operations were visited and information was collected from the various ministries involved with industrial development and environmental protection. Estimates of the mass of pollutants discharged to the ocean were based upon production rates used in conjunction with actual measurements made by the industries located in the countries visited; studies reported in the literature; and an extrapolation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Effluent Standards for various industrial sectors. The West African region was divided into five zones closely approximating the major currents of the Atlantic Ocean. The estimated pollution discharged by the industrial sector was calculated for each of the zones by adding the contribution from each country assigned to a zone.  相似文献
