The Arctic land area has warmed by > 1 °C in the last 30 years and there is evidence that this has led to increased productivity and stature of tundra vegetation and reduced albedo, effecting a positive (amplifying) feedback to climate warming. We applied an individual-based dynamic vegetation model over the Arctic forced by observed climate and atmospheric CO(2) for 1980-2006. Averaged over the study area, the model simulated increases in primary production and leaf area index, and an increasing representation of shrubs and trees in vegetation. The main underlying mechanism was a warming-driven increase in growing season length, enhancing the production of shrubs and trees to the detriment of shaded ground-level vegetation. The simulated vegetation changes were estimated to correspond to a 1.75 % decline in snow-season albedo. Implications for modelling future climate impacts on Arctic ecosystems and for the incorporation of biogeophysical feedback mechanisms in Arctic system models are discussed.  相似文献

This paper argues that the current formalization system for small-scale gold miners in Ghana has been undermined and the small-scale mining laws no longer capture the reality of the sector’s activities. The paper will examine the small-scale mining system and shows that registered and unregistered actors operate not only in parallel but are actually intertwined and highly dependent on one another. The paper shows that the perceived dichotomy of formal and informal actors in the sector does not actually exist. The sector has instead evolved into a highly intertwined group of semi-formal sectors operating with varying degrees of legal registrations. The paper concludes that political leniency and law enforcement corruption has resulted in a booming small-scale gold system under poor government control. The paper recommends that politicians move to enact reforms to regularize the small-scale mining sector and curtail ubiquitous environmental and occupational safety problems. Anti-corruption initiatives and law enforcement reforms are the most urgent. However, reforming the laws is also necessary to capture and regulate the technological innovations the sector is currently using.  相似文献

The use of nanoscale materials is growing exponentially, but there are also concerns about the environmental hazard to aquatic biota. Metal-containing engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are an important group of these new materials, and are often made of one metal (e.g., Cu-NPs and Ag-NPs), metal oxides (e.g., ZnO and TiO(2) NPs), or composite of several metals. The physiological effects and toxicity of trace metals in the traditional dissolved form are relatively well known and the overall aim of this review was to use our existing conceptual framework of metal toxicity in fish to compare and contrast the effects of nanometals. Conceptually, there are some fundamental differences that relate to bioavailability and uptake. The chemistry and behaviour of nanometals involves dynamic aspects of aggregation theory, rather than the equilibrium models traditionally used for free metal ions. Some NPs, such as Cu-NPs, may also release free metal ions from the surface of the particle. Biological uptake of NPs is not likely via ion transporters, but endocytosis is a possible uptake mechanism. The body distribution, metabolism, and excretion of nanometals is poorly understood and hampered by a lack of methods for measuring NPs in tissues. Although data sets are still limited, emerging studies on the acute toxicity of nanometals have so far shown that these materials can be lethal to fish in the mg-μgl(-1) range, depending on the type of material. Evidence suggests that some nanometals can be more acutely toxic to some fish than dissolved forms. For example, juvenile zebrafish have a 48-h LC(50) of about 0.71 and 1.78mgl(-1) for nano- and dissolved forms of Cu respectively. The acute toxicity of metal NPs is not always explained, or only partly explained, by the presence of free metal ions; suggesting that other novel mechanisms may be involved in bioavailability. Evidence suggests that nanometals can cause a range of sublethal effects in fish including respiratory toxicity, disturbances to trace elements in tissues, inhibition of Na(+)K(+)-ATPase, and oxidative stress. Organ pathologies from nanometals can be found in a range of organs including the gill, liver, intestine, and brain. These sublethal effects suggest some common features in the sublethal responses to nanometals compared to metal salts. Effects on early life stages of fish are also emerging, with reports of nanometals crossing the chorion (e.g., Ag-NPs), and suggestions that the nano-forms of some metals (Cu-NPs and ZnO NPs) may be more toxic to embryos or juveniles, than the equivalent metal salt. It remains possible that nanometals could interfere with, and/or stimulate stress responses in fish; but data has yet to be collected on this aspect. We conclude that nanometals do have adverse physiological effects on fish, and the hazard for some metal NPs will be different to the traditional dissolved forms of metals.  相似文献

Two factors have contributed to the preparation of this paper. The first stemmed from Morton Sterling’s remarks in his address to the Houston Meeting. Therein he suggested the value of industry making public the progress made in overcoming pollution problems. Interest in Kraft Pulping Pollution problems on a wider scale constituted the second factor. This is well illustrated by the U.S.P.H.S. annotated bibliography, “Air Pollution and the Kraft Pulping Industry.” This paper will not contribute any new technology. It will, however, indicate how an established plant, in a large urban area, has planned and taken action to solve a pollution problem. Planning in this situation is used in a broad sense. It includes education and training of personnel, changes in process, capital expenditure and new installations, constant attention to maintenance and control, utilization of research and development from all sources, and relations with the public and regulatory agencies.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine which of several alternative air pollution abatement systems affords the most economical solution to the control of atmospheric emissions during the charging of coal into by-product coke ovens. The study was limited to the consideration of existing by-product batteries, and the assumption was made that no coking plant has the alternative to do nothing nor will the plant choose to delay abatement through legal procedures. The data indicate that a jumper pipe installation with a new larry car provides the most economical control.  相似文献

An electrical aerosol analyzer capable of performing rapid, in situ size distribution measurement on aerosols from 0.003 to 1 μm diameter has been described. The instrument is based on the “diffusion charging-mobility analysis” principle first described by Whitby and Clark. The prototype instrument has a total volume of 3.75 ft3 and a total weight of 60 lb, and is sufficiently portable to be used on small airplanes and ground based vehicles for mobile air pollution studies. The paper describes the design, operation, and performance of the instrument. Sample data are presented showing the size distributions of aerosols measured by the instrument on board a small research aircraft over the Los Angeles basin at several different altitudes. In addition, data are presented showing the size distribution of smog chamber aerosols and aerosols produced by a conventional Collison atomizer.  相似文献

The optimum level of sulfur pollution control for a coal fired power plant is the point where the sum of societal costs, due to pollution, and control costs is minimized. This basic microeconomic concept has been of limited practical value due to considerable uncertainty in estimating both costs. A probabilistic approach is used to characterize these uncertainties quantitatively for a hypothetical 1000 Mwe plant located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Only mortality effects within a distance of 80 km of the plant have been included. The results allow explicit consideration of attitude toward risk and appropriate level of investment to prevent deaths. Limitations of the findings are discussed. Implications are described for policy based on alternative sets of values and assumptions.  相似文献

Final design, calibration, and field testing have been completed for a new 1.13 m3/min (40 cfm) High-volume Virtual Impactor (HVVI). Field tests have demonstrated that the new classifier/collector works well as an accessory to the existing PM10 Size Selective Inlet high-volume samplers. The HVVI provides two fractions of PM10 mass, both of which are collected by filtration. The fine fraction (0-2.5 μm aero. dia.) Is collected on the standard 20.3 × 25.4 cm (8- × 10-in) high-volume filter; the coarse fraction (2.5-10 μm aero. dia.) is collected on a 5.1 × 15.2 cm (2- × 6-in) filter. Coarse flow through the receiver tubes is limited to 0.057 m3/min (2 cfm), 5 percent of the total flow.

The operating pressure drop across the HVVI stages Is sufficiently high to make changes In pressure across the collection filters Insignificant. The HVVI filter holder assembly facilitates loading/ unloading samples in the laboratory, thus eliminating damage due to handling filters in the field. Size separation characteristics of the HVVI agree well with those for the 16.7 L/min commercially available dichotomous sampler with the 50 percent effectiveness (cut-point) occurring at 2.5 μm. Applying laboratory-determined particle losses to the typical ambient particle mass size distribution described In Federal Register 49, 40 CFR, Part 53, Table D-3, the HVVI fine fraction total mass loss is less than 0.8 percent for liquid particles and less than 0.1 percent for solid particles; coarse fraction total mass loss is less than 2.5 percent for liquid particles, and less than 0.2 percent for solid particles.  相似文献

Thoracic (PM10), fine thoracic (PM2.5) and sub-micrometer (PM1) airborne particulate matter was sampled during day and night. In total, about 100 indoor and outdoor samples were collected for each fraction at ten different office environments. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and ion chromatography were applied for the quantification of some major and minor elements and ions in the collected aerosols. During daytime, mass concentrations were in the ranges: 11–29, 8.1–24, and 6.6–18 μg m?3, with averages of 20 ± 1, 15.0 ± 0.9, and 11.0 ± 0.8 μg m?3, respectively. At night, mass concentrations were found to be significantly lower for all fractions. Indoor PM1 concentrations exceeded the corresponding outdoor levels during office hours and were thought to be elevated by office printers. Particles with diameters between 1 and 2.5 μm and 2.5 and 10 μm were mainly associated with soil dust elements and were clearly subjected to distinct periods of settling/resuspension. Indoor NO3? levels were found to follow specific microclimatic conditions at the office environments, while daytime levels of sub-micrometer Cl? were possibly elevated by the use of Cl-containing cleaning products. Indoor carbon black concentrations were sometimes as high as 22 μg m?3 and were strongly correlated with outdoor traffic conditions.  相似文献
