This paper reports the results of a comparative analysis of the psychosocial impacts of municipal solid waste disposal facilities (both landfills and incinerators) in six communities in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, Canada. Telephone surveys were administered to random samples of residents living around each facility between 1990 and 1995 (total n=1203). The results of logistic regression analyses show that type of facility was the strongest predictor of residents' awareness, concern, and actions taken in response to site concerns. Essentially, residents living in close proximity to a landfill had a higher probability of reporting awareness, concern or actions than residents living around an incinerator site. There was little evidence of differences in reactions between Ontario and British Columbia (BC) residents, despite variations in provincial policies on waste disposal. The effects of other predictors, with the exception of involvement in the local community, were not consistent, supporting previous findings that the determinants of facility impacts are outcome‐specific. / Management problems arise in semiarid rangeland that are characterized by marked wet and dry seasons because of forage deficiencies in the dry season. These natural vegetation rangelands can sustain livestock all year long when forage and senesced grass are available into the dry season. Seasonal range condition data are required to provide a basis for pasture management to help locate dry season cover and thereby minimize overstocking and degradation. The generation of seasonal data using Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery was undertaken to assess changes in natural vegetation cover in the southern Botswana Kalahari. Visual analysis of spectral reflectance curves, the development of spectral separability indexes, and conventional classification analysis techniques were used to identify and differentiate rangeland features. Results from reflectance curves indicated that most rangeland cover types could be preferentially distinguished using mainly wet season data, especially on the longer TM wavebands, and that range feature differentiation was more problematic on darker soils than on lighter soils. Spectral separability indexes (SSIs) confirmed that range feature separation varied considerably as a function of waveband and was more effective in the wet than the dry season. The SSIs also showed that range feature differentiation in both seasons was most effective using a combination of the chlorophyll absorpance band (TM3) and two mid-infrared bands (TM5 and TM7). Wet season data were more effectively classified in terms of range features than dry season data although some class similarity was inferred across the two classified data sets. The work shows that overall trends may be generated by comparing seasonal data sets, thereby providing an overall basis for dry season decision making. However, particular problems arise within the dry season data sets probably because of spectral similarities between shadow and darkened vegetation cover, thereby implying that further work is needed. Sustainability is a major challenge in today's business world, making environmental, social and governance criteria an indispensable tool for business management and investment decisions. Using 2020 data of 47 companies from the STOXX Europe Total Market Utilities Index and qualitative comparative analysis, this study aims to analyse how the combination of CO2 equivalent emissions, sustainability compensation incentives, environmental investments, environment management training, and policy fair competition leads to utility companies' stock market returns. Two subsample models (electricity and non-electricity utilities) have been considered in the study. The results point to the absence of CO2 equivalent emissions, the absence of incentives, and the presence of environmental investment as key variables to lead to stock market returns. The findings provide relevant information for managers and practitioners of utilities industry to achieve improvements in the environmental, social and governance management practices, maintaining profitability in financial markets and facilitating decision-making for investors. 相似文献

Consulting firms and contractors can mitigate the environmental effects of construction; however, they may disagree in their interpretations of how to address various environmental topics and the linkage between key topics and related indicators disclosed in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. This study investigated the linkage between key topics and performance indicators disclosed by the two types of companies in eight CSR reports. The present study identified and analyzed environmental material topics, indicator disclosures, and their relationships. The key topics (such as those concerning materials and energy) identified by consulting firms were not necessarily those regarded as important by the contractors. A strong correlation existed between the indicator disclosures of the companies. Emissions indicators were most frequently disclosed. The contribution of this study is proposing the importance of aligning topics and indicators. The continuing existence of zoos and their good purposes such as conservation, science, education, and recreation, can be
ethically justified only if zoos guarantee the welfare of their animals. The usual criteria for measuring animal welfare in
zoos are physical health, long life, and reproduction. This paper looks at these criteria and finds them insufficient. Additional
criteria are submitted to expand the range of welfare considerations: natural and abnormal behavior; freedom and choice; and
dignity. All these criteria should play a role in analyzing zoo animal welfare and interests but dignity has the overriding

Anthropogenic impairment of water bodies represents a global environmental concern, yet few attempts have successfully linked
fish performance to thermal habitat suitability and fewer have distinguished co-varying water quality constraints. We interfaced
fish bioenergetics, field measurements, and Thermal Remote Imaging to generate a spatially-explicit, high-resolution surface
of fish growth potential, and next employed a structured hypothesis to detect relationships among measures of fish performance
and co-varying water quality constraints. Our thermal surface of fish performance captured the amount and spatial-temporal
arrangement of thermally-suitable habitat for three focal species in an extremely heterogeneous reservoir, but interpretation
of this pattern was initially confounded by seasonal covariation of water residence time and water quality. Subsequent path
analysis revealed that in terms of seasonal patterns in growth potential, catfish and walleye responded to temperature, positively
and negatively, respectively; crappie and walleye responded to eutrophy (negatively). At the high eutrophy levels observed
in this system, some desired fishes appear to suffer from excessive cultural eutrophication within the context of elevated
temperatures whereas others appear to be largely unaffected or even enhanced. Our overall findings do not lead to the conclusion
that this system is degraded by pollution; however, they do highlight the need to use a sensitive focal species in the process
of determining allowable nutrient loading and as integrators of habitat suitability across multiple spatial and temporal scales.
We provide an integrated approach useful for quantifying fish growth potential and identifying water quality constraints on
fish performance at spatial scales appropriate for whole-system management. 相似文献

This result is accomplished in markets that regulators can implement without knowing pollution abatement costs. The theoretical promise of emissions trading, along with real‐world success stories from air emissions trading, has led to initiatives to use trading for water pollution control. Yet, trading, particularly when it involves nonpoint sources of pollution, requires significant departures from the textbook concept. This paper explores how features of water quality problems affect the design of markets for water pollution control relative to textbook emissions markets. Three fundamental design tasks that regulators must address for pollution trading to achieve an environmental goal at low cost are examined: (1) defining the point and nonpoint commodities to be traded, (2) defining rules governing commodity exchange, and (3) setting caps on the commodity supplies so as to achieve an environmental target. We show that the way in which these tasks are optimally addressed for water quality markets differs significantly from the textbook model and its real‐world analogs. We also show that the fundamental appeal of emissions trading is lost in the case of realistic water quality markets, as market designs that reduce the costs of achieving water quality goals may no longer be implementable without the regulatory authority having information on abatement costs. 相似文献

An organizational level empirical analysis of career advancement in organizations was conducted on a diverse sample of 318 mid to large size worksites in Georgia, USA. Two variables were used to indicate career advancement: (1) emphasis on upward mobility of non‐management employees to other non‐management positions; and (2) the movement of non‐management employees into management. Two sets of organizational variables are differentially related to the two different indicators of career advancement. Organizational structural variables are more likely to be related to upward mobility within the non‐management ranks, and demographic variables are more likely to be related to across‐category movement from non‐management to management.
