This paper on automobile exhaust particulates describes total particulate composition, size of exhausted lead particulates, and the effects of traps on total lead emitted. This study was conducted using cars manufactured during 1966-1970. Work in suspended particulate emission from several vehicles operated on a chassis dynamometer under Federal 7-mode cycle conditions has shown: (1 ) cars vary widely in the amounts and composition of their particulate emissions; (2) cold-cycle operation gives 2-8 times more particulate than hot engine operation; (3) lead compounds represent less than one-third of total particulates, the remainder being carbon compounds along with ammonium and nitrate ions and unknown materials; (4) carbon emission for stabilized cars using leaded gasoline varies widely but averages about 35% of the total; (5) suspended particulate emissions are nearly equal with new cars whether or not lead is present; (6) exhausted lead varies with the condition of the exhaust system and ranges between 7 and 30% of the lead consumed by the engine; (7) fuel additives affect the amount of emitted particulates; (8) probe sampling techniques underestimate by a large factor the amount of particulates emitted by vehicles; and (9) trapping systems offer potential for greatly reducing the emission of suspended total particulates. 相似文献

Results from a detailed analysis of sulfur dioxide (SO2) reductions achievable through “deep” physical coal cleaning (PCC) at 20 coal-fired power plants in the Ohio-Indiana-Illinois region are presented here. These plants all have capacities larger than 500 MWe, are currently without any flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, and burn coal of greater than l%sulfur content (in 1980). Their aggregate emissions of 2.4 million tons of SO2 per year represents 55% of the SO2 inventory for these states. The principal coal supplies for each power plant were identified and characterized as to coal seam and county of origin, so that published coal-washability data could be matched to each supplier. The SO2 reductions that would result from deep cleaning each coal (Level 4) were calculated using an Argonne computer model that assumes a weight recovery of 80%. Percentage reductions in sulfur content ranged from zero to 52%, with a mean value of 29%, and costs ranged from a low of $364/ton SO2 removed to over $2000/ton SO2 removed. Because coal suppliers to these power plants employ some voluntary coal cleaning, the anticipated emissions reduction from current levels should be near 20%. Costs then were estimated for FGD systems designed to remove the same amount of SO2 as was achieved by PCC through the use of partial scrubbing with bypass of the remaining flue gas. On this basis, PCC was more cost-effective than FGD for about 50% of the plants studied and had comparable costs for another 25% of the plants. Following an article on the charm model (Naturwissenschaften 64, 229 (1977)) and its predictions, the present paper reviews the current status of its experimental verification. Four out of six predicted mesons with charm have been detected by their nonleptonic decay. The semileptonic decay of charmed mesons has also been established proving the predicted weak nature of the decay. In addition, there are strong indications as to the existence of charmed baryons from a photoproduction experiment corroborating clues given earlier by neutrino experiments. 相似文献

Several theoretical models have been proposed to explain the new heavy mesons discovered in 1974, among them the charm model and the color model. Recent experiments strongly support the charm model. The activities of the disaccharidases maltase and sucrase in 4 amniotic fluid from cystic fibrosis (CF) pregnancies have been compared to those of 120 non CF-pregnancies. Very low levels were found in 3 of the CF-fluids. The fourth CF-fluid was normal in all measured microvillar enzyme activities. Elevated levels of disaccharidases in meconium from one of the patients born with CF, supports the idea that these enzymes are trapped in the intestinal cavity by sticky meconium. 相似文献

New methods in landscape ecology to study the link between landscape between landscape heterogeneity and landscape functionality are needed.Heterogeneity is a basic characteristic of Iandscape,and landscape fnction is the capacity to change the structural heterogeneity of a landscape ystem.In most developed countries the industrialisation of agriculture has in general resulted in a change of agricultural landscapes from a small-grained heterogeneous pattern towards more monotonous and monofunctional landscapes.During the 1990‘s this trends seems to have changed due to a diversification of rural land use and new trends in urbanisation.Weather these phases of landscape development should be expected in developing countries is a totally open question.Dealing with the study of multifunctionality of landscapes it is proposed to distinguish between ecological functionality of landscape ecosystems,functionality.Further,the relation between function,space and scale is important by the determination of spatial and time segregation as well as spatial and time integration of multifunctionality in landscapes. 相似文献
