Two growth inhibition tests using the red marine macroalgae Ceramium strictum and the brackish water relative C. tenuicorne have been developed. Besides using phenol as a reference substance, the toxicity of a metal, a flame retardant and a complex effluent water were assayed. The two methods are reliable and repeatable bioassays for salinities between 4 and 30 per thousandth. The coefficients of variation (CV) for toxicity of the reference substance phenol were 15% for the Stereo Microscope Analysis test and between 24 and 51% for the Computer Image Analysis test (n=5). Ceramium spp. are common and important primary producers in temperate coastal waters and are thus relevant as test organisms. Phytoremediation is already regarded as an efficient technique to remove or degrade various pollutants in soils, water and sediments. However, hydrophobic organic molecules such as PAHs, PCBs and PCDD/Fs are much less responsive to bioremediation strategies than, for example, BTEX or LAS. PCDD/Fs and PCBs represent 3 prominent groups of persistent organic pollutants that share common chemical, toxicological and environmental properties. Their widespread presence in the environment may be explained by their chemical and biological stability. This review considers their fate and dissipation mechanisms. It is then possible to identify major sinks and to understand biological activities useful for remediation. Public health and economic priorities lead to the conclusion that alternative techniques to physical treatments are required. This review focuses on particular problems encountered in biodegradation and bioavailability of PCDD/Fs and PCBs. It highlights the potential and limitations of plants and micro-organisms as bioremediation agents and summarises how plants can be used to augment bacterial activity. Phytoremediation is shown to provide some new possibilities in reducing risks associated with dioxins and PCBs. 相似文献

Growth and trace metal accumulation of two Salix clones on sediment-derived soils with increasing contamination levels 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The growth and metal uptake of two willow clones (Salix fragilis 'Belgisch Rood' and Salix viminalis 'Aage') was evaluated in a greenhouse pot experiment with six sediment-derived soils with increasing field Cd levels (0.9-41.4 mg kg-1). Metal concentrations of eight elements were measured in roots, stems and leaves and correlated to total and soil water metal concentrations. Dry weight root biomass, number of leaves and shoot length were measured to identify eventual negative responses of the trees. No growth inhibition was observed for both clones for any of the treatments (max. 41.4 mg kg-1 Cd, 1914 mg kg-1 Cr, 2422 mg kg-1 Zn, 655 mg kg-1 Pb), allowing their use for phytoextraction on a broad range of contaminated sediments. However, dry weight root biomass and total shoot length were significantly lower for S. viminalis compared to S. fragilis for all treatments. Willow foliar Cd concentrations were strongly correlated with soil and soil water Cd concentrations. Both clones exhibited high accumulation levels of Cd and Zn in aboveground plant parts, making them suitable subjects for phytoextraction research. Cu, Cr, Pb, Fe, Mn and Ni were found mainly in the roots. Bioconcentration factors of Cd and Zn in the leaves were highest for the treatments with the lowest soil Cd and Zn concentration. 相似文献

Correlations between terricolous bryophyte- and lichen- vegetation and edaphic parameters (pH, organic matter, nitrogen, Carbon/nitrogen ratio, Cation Exchange Capacity, and Cd, Pb and Zn soil contents) of soils submitted to a gradient of metal contamination in northern France were performed using statistical analysis. The purpose of this study was to develop an in situ sediment bioassay chamber and respective procedures, suitable for performing toxicity bioassays with benthic invertebrates, using the midge Chironomus riparius. It was also our objective to compare the responses obtained under controlled conditions (laboratory 10-day larval growth and survival test) with those obtained in situ. Clean sand and a formulated sediment were incorporated in the in situ bioassay, along with local sediments, as a way of minimizing natural variability due to physicochemical differences among sediments or due to interactions with indigenous organisms. Recovery of organisms was good (80-100% in the control and reference site), indicating that the developed chamber and protocol were suitable for exposing and retrieving C. riparius in situ. Until recently, it has been assumed that pelagic crinoids, the roveacrinids (Roveacrinida, Crinoidea), became extinct during the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary event. Recent finds of well-preserved roveacrinidal remains (brachials and radials) in the Danian (Early Paleogene) of Poland showed that they survived into the earliest Cenozoic. This group was thus characterized as a "dead clade walking". Here, we present fossil evidence that these pelagic crinoids survived in Poland until at least the Middle Miocene (Badenian, ca. 14?Myr ago)-more than 50?Myr after their supposed extinction. These Miocene roveacrinids constitute the first documented evidence of Roveacrinida in strata of Neogene age, thus prolonging the stratigraphic range of pelagic crinoids. This find characterizes the order as a "Lazarus taxon" rather than a "dead clade walking" group. 相似文献

The current study shows the process and the results of a methodology proposed to contribute with the issue of how to evaluate
the adaptation to climate variability and future climate change. The proposed methodology consists of a standard to evaluate
farmer’s adaptation to climate variability, mainly due to drought in watersheds in Central America; and was created with contributions
from experts and professionals around this region. The phases for this process were: (1) literature review about the topic,
(2) development of a preliminary standard, (3) expert interviews for the evaluation of this preliminary standard, (4) construction
of a standard to evaluate the issue of adaptation to climate variability emphasizing drought through contributions from experts
and their preliminary evaluations, (5) applicability test of this standard for the evaluation of climate variability under
real conditions and (6) application of this standard through a case study in the Aguas Calientes river sub-watershed in Nicaragua,
which permanently undergoes drought problems and climate variability. This standard has five main principles that go from
the general, considering regional and national policies and institutionalism, to the specifics at the level of watersheds.
In addition to those principles, the standard contains ten criteria, 26 indicators and 51 verifiers distributed among the
main five principles. In the process for testing this standard in the Aguas Calientes river watershed in Nicaragua, the score
for the general applicability to this standard was middle-level (score of 3 in a scale of 1 to 5), although, for the main
