Demographic factors such as operational sex ratio (OSR) and local population density (LPD) are temporally and spatially dynamic in the natural environment but the influence of these variables on male mating success and the mechanisms behind it are still poorly understood and highly controversial. Here, we manipulated the OSR and LPD of a seed bug, Nysius huttoni, and carried out a series of mating trials to test how these variables affected male mating success. The two demographic factors had no significant interactions, suggesting that they affect male mating success independently in N. huttoni. In this species male mating success was significantly higher in both male- and female-biased OSR than in even OSR. It is suggested that, in male-biased OSR, the increased intensity of competition and interference does not result in lower male mating success; rather, males may make more effort in courting and females may have more chance to encounter better males, resulting in higher male mating success. In female-biased OSR, females may become less choosy and less likely to reject male mating attempt, leading to the higher male mating success. Lower male mating success in N. huttoni in high LPD may be due to increased interference between males and/or delayed female receptiveness for mating. OSR had a stronger effect on male mating success than LPD in N. huttoni, suggesting that OSR and LPD affect mating success in different ways and intensities. 相似文献

The post-release behaviour of eight black marlin (Makaira indica), caught by standard sportfishing techniques off the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, was investigated using ultrasonic telemetry.
Five marlin between 100 and 420 kg were successfully tracked for periods of 8 to 27 h. Of the three others tagged, one was
killed by a shark and two shed their tags, probably as the result of poor attachment. The black marlin spent most of their
time within 10 m of the surface, both day and night. During the day, however, they also spent some time between 40 and 140 m
depth. They rarely penetrated the thermocline, and then only briefly, remaining at temperatures no more than 8 C° below that
of surface waters. The deepest dives were to 178 m. Four of the five marlin tracked, initially moved offshore before heading
parallel to the shore, whereas the other marlin stayed close to the reef edge. The average mean swimming speeds over the ground
for entire tracks ranged from 0.7 to 1.02 m s−1.

The copepod Calanus finmarchicus Gunnerus is a key component of the planktonic food web in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. In this region, productivity-determining
biophysical interactions occur in the upper 0 to 30 m of the water column. The eggs and nauplii of C. finmarchicus are found in this layer. Measurements of the diffuse attenuation coefficients for solar ultraviolet-B radiation (280 to 320 nm,
UV-B) at various locations in this region indicated maximum 10% depths (the depth to which 10% of the surface energy penetrates)
of 3 to 4 m at a wavelength of 310 nm. This represents a significant percentage of the summer mixed-layer water column: organisms
residing in this layer are exposed to UV-B radiation. Laboratory experiments using a Xenon-arc-lamp based solar simulator
revealed that C. finmarchicus embryos exposed to UV-B exhibited high wavelength-dependent mortality. The strongest effects occurred under exposures to
wavelengths below 312 nm. A significant percentage of nauplii hatched from eggs exposed to these wavelengths exhibited malformations
indicative of errors in pattern formation during embryogenesis. At the shorter wavelengths (<305 nm), UV-B-induced mortality
was strongly dependent on cumulative exposure. The biological weighting function (BWF) derived for UV-B-induced mortality
in C. finmarchicus eggs is similar to that reported for naked DNA. This suggests that the UV-B-induced mortality effect on C. finmarchicus embryos is a direct result of DNA damage. There was no evidence of a detrimental effect of ultraviolet-A radiation (320 to
400 nm). Calculations based upon the BWF indicate that, under current noon surface irradiance, 50% of C. finmarchicus eggs located at or very near (within 10 cm) the ocean surface will be dead after 2.5 h of exposure. Under solar spectral
irradiance simulating a 20% decrease in ozone layer thickness, this time drops to 2.2 h. These are first-order estimates based
upon irradiance taken at a time of day during which the values would be maximal. Nonetheless, they illustrate the relative
changes in UV-B effects that will result from ozone layer depletions expected over the coming decades. It is also important
to point out that variability in cloud cover, water quality, and vertical distribution and displacement within the mixed layer,
can all have a greater effect on the flux of UV-B radiation to which C. finmarchicus eggs are exposed than will ozone layer depletion at these latitudes.

Summary. Nickel hyperaccumulator plants contain unusually elevated levels of Ni (>1,000 mg Ni kg−1). The high Ni concentration of hyperaccumulator tissues may affect ecosystem processes such as decomposition, but this has
yet to be studied under field conditions. We used Senecio coronatus Thunb. (Harv.) from two pairs of serpentine sites: one member of each pair contained a hyperaccumulator population and the
other a non-hyperaccumulator population. Our main goal was to determine if leaf Ni status (hyperaccumulator or non-hyperaccumulator)
affected leaf decomposition rate on serpentine sites. We also used a non-serpentine site on which leaves from all four S. coronatus populations were placed to compare decomposition at a single location. Dried leaf fragments were put into fine-mesh (0.1 mm)
nylon decomposition bags and placed on field sites in mid-summer (early February) 2000. Sets of bags were recovered after
1, 3.5, and 8 months, their contents dried and weighed, and the Ni concentration and total Ni content of high-Ni leaves was
measured. For the serpentine sites, there was no significant effect of leaf Ni status or site type on decomposition rates
at 1 and 3.5 months. By 8 months, leaf Ni status and site type significantly influenced decomposition on one pair of sites:
hyperaccumulator leaves decomposed more slowly than non-hyperaccumulator leaves, and leaves of both types decomposed more
slowly on the non-hyperaccumulator site. At the non-serpentine site, the highest-Ni leaves (15,000 mg Ni kg−1) decomposed more slowly than all others, but leaves containing 9,200 mg Ni kg−1 did not decompose more slowly than non-hyperaccumulator leaves. Nickel in decomposing hyperaccumulator leaves was released
rapidly: after 1 month 57–68% of biomass was lost and only 9–28% of original Ni content remained. We conclude that very high
(>10,000 mg Ni kg−1) leaf Ni concentrations may slow decomposition and that Ni is released at high rates that may impact co-occurring litter-

Trace elements were determined in fish and oysters from Sepetiba Bay, Brazil, by total reflection Xray fluorescence using synchrotron radiation (SRTXRF). Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn and Se were determined in fish muscles and organs and in oyster soft tissue. SRTXRF was shown to be a good tool for the analysis of trace elements from biological tissue samples. Overall, the levels of the analysed metals were higher in oysters than in the fish samples. Metals were not uniformly distributed throughout the body of the analysed fish. The detected concentrations of Cr, Zn and Se were very high in some samples, surpassing the maximum limits established by Brazilian legislation. 相似文献

Essential and toxic elements were determined by Energy Dispersive Polarized X-Rays Fluorescence Spectrometry (EDPXRF) in the meat of 145 wild and bred animals to provide the baseline data regarding meat of wild and bred animals consumed in central Italy. As far as K, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Cu are concerned, no significant differences resulted between young and adults and between males and females for farmed and wild animals. No marked differences were found between hunted and non-hunted animals groups. In all samples analyzed, Mn, Cr, and Mo were below the detection limit. As far as the non-essential or toxic elements are concerned, As, Cd, V, and Hg concentrations in muscle from wild and bred animals were low and always below the detection limits. Among the wild animals killed with lead (Pb) bullets, elevated Pb concentrations in tissues were detected. This finding may result in elevated Pb levels in meat ingested by humans. 相似文献

Formaldehyde is a dangerous indoor pollutant which is introduced in house by common objects such as furniture. Effective microorganisms have the very interesting ability to degrade some pollutants. Here, we tested the removal of formaldehyde and aromatic aldehydes using effective microorganisms including yeast, lactic acid bacteria, and photosynthetic bacteria. Formaldehyde was quantified by GC–MS of formaldehyde dinitrophenylhydrazone. Other aldehydes were analyzed by GC–MS. Results show that effective microorganisms remove 70–100 % of formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and 4-methylbenzaldehyde in about a week. Experiments on chipboard panels indicate the possibility to decrease the amount of formaldehyde emission by furniture. This is the first report on the removal of formaldehyde by effective microorganisms, to our best knowledge. 相似文献
