Adaptive management (AM) is a rigorous approach to implementing, monitoring, and evaluating actions, so as to learn and adjust those actions. Existing AM projects are at risk from climate change, and current AM guidance does not provide adequate methods to deal with this risk. Climate change adaptation (CCA) is an approach to plan and implement actions to reduce risks from climate variability and climate change, and to exploit beneficial opportunities. AM projects could be made more resilient to extreme climate events by applying the principles and procedures of CCA. To test this idea, we analyze the effects of extreme climatic events on five existing AM projects focused on ecosystem restoration and species recovery, in the Russian, Trinity, Okanagan, Platte, and Missouri River Basins. We examine these five case studies together to generate insights on how integrating CCA principles and practices into their design and implementation could improve their sustainability, despite significant technical and institutional challenges, particularly at larger scales. Although climate change brings substantial risks to AM projects, it may also provide opportunities, including creating new habitats, increasing the ability to quickly test flow‐habitat hypotheses, stimulating improvements in watershed management and water conservation, expanding the use of real‐time tools for flow management, and catalyzing creative application of CCA principles and procedures. 相似文献

The primary purpose of the study was to address the claim that people are more likely to walk to a transit stop if they live on a “walkable” block. An additional purpose was to evaluate the Irvine Minnesota Inventory (IMI) as an environmental audit tool. The IMI was used to measure walkability features of 19 blocks in a revitalizing neighborhood. We hypothesized that residents who walked to a light rail TRAX stop (n = 22) would live on blocks with higher walkability ratings compared to residents who did not walk to TRAX (nonriders, n = 15), or who walked only after a closer TRAX stop was built (new users, n = 11). A MANCOVA indicated the IMI scales differentiated the blocks; the strongest differences were obtained in subscales that measured the block's diversity, safety from crime and density (marginally significant). Participants' perceptions of their complete walk to the transit stop were consistent with the home block IMI scores, with the continuing riders having more positive views than the other two groups. The results show the ability of the IMI to distinguish among blocks in walkability, and support further use of this audit tool in environmental analyses and active living research. We end with a discussion of conceptual and methodological issues in the use of audit tools and provide recommendations for using these measures for local, immediate interests, as well as for building a broader science of environmental measurement. 相似文献

Radioactive contamination of agricultural land may necessitate long-term changes in food production systems, through application
of selected countermeasures, in order to reduce the accumulation of radionuclides in food. We quantified the impact of selected
countermeasures on habitat diversity, using the hypothetical case of two agricultural areas in Finland. The management scenarios
studied were conversions from grassland to cereal production and from grassland and crop production to afforestation. The
two study sites differed with respect to present agricultural production: one being predominantly cereal production and seminatural
grasslands, while the other was dominated by intensive grass and dairy production. Some of the management scenarios are expected
to affect landscape structures and habitat diversity. These potential changes were assessed using a spatial pattern analysis
program in connection with geographic information systems. The studied landscape changes resulted in a more monotonous landscape
structure compared to the present management, by increasing the mean habitat patch size, reducing the total habitat edge length
and reducing the overall habitat diversity calculated by the Shannon diversity index. The degree of change was dependent on
the present agricultural management practice in the case study sites. Where dairy production was predominant, the landscape
structure changes were mostly due to conversion of intensive pastures and grasslands to cereal production. In the area dominated
by cereal production and seminatural grasslands, the greatest predicted impacts resulted from afforestation of meadows and
pastures. The studied management changes are predicted to reduce biodiversity at the species level as well as diminishing
species-rich habitats. This study has predicted prominent side effects in habitat diversity resulting from application of
management scenarios. These potential long-term impacts should be considered by decision-makers when planning future strategies

Integrated, quantitative expressions of anthropogenic stress over large geographic regions can be valuable tools in environmental research and management. Despite the fundamental appeal of a regional approach, development of regional stress measures remains one of the most important current challenges in environmental science. Using publicly available, pre-existing spatial datasets, we developed a geographic information system database of 86 variables related to five classes of anthropogenic stress in the U.S. Great Lakes basin: agriculture, atmospheric deposition, human population, land cover, and point source pollution. The original variables were quantified by a variety of data types over a broad range of spatial and classification resolutions. We summarized the original data for 762 watershed-based units that comprise the U.S. portion of the basin and then used principal components analysis to develop overall stress measures within each stress category. We developed a cumulative stress index by combining the first principal component from each of the five stress categories. Maps of the stress measures illustrate strong spatial patterns across the basin, with the greatest amount of stress occurring on the western shore of Lake Michigan, southwest Lake Erie, and southeastern Lake Ontario. We found strong relationships between the stress measures and characteristics of bird communities, fish communities, and water chemistry measurements from the coastal region. The stress measures are taken to represent the major threats to coastal ecosystems in the U.S. Great Lakes. Such regional-scale efforts are critical for understanding relationships between human disturbance and ecosystem response, and can be used to guide environmental decision-making at both regional and local scales. 相似文献

A literature search and survey of Virginia, USA, campgrounds with RV pump-out stations were used to determine whether boat
holding-tank deodorant chemicals would have deleterious effects on marina septic systems or package treatment plants. Laboratory
studies reported in the literature indicate that these chemical additives could affect septic system function in three ways:
(1) active ingredients in the additives can impair sewage degradation in septic tanks, causing sludge buildup and overflow
of solids into the drainfield, (2) additive chemicals might enter the drainfield and, in high enough concentrations, reduce
the drainfield's ability to degrade waste, or (3) toxic additive chemicals might migrate from the drainfield to ground or
surface water. Laboratory studies also show that some ingredients added to holding tanks interfere with functioning of activated
sludge treatment process. Experience in the field and in other laboratory studies suggests that factors such as dilution of
treated waste with untreated waste and the characteristics of the sewage to be treated can reduce the possibility of damage
to septic and activated sludge systems. The campground owners surveyed indicated that they have few problems with their septic
systems in spite of the presence of chemical additives in the RV waste. However, most of them practice good septic system
maintenance and have devised other means of ensuring that their systems function efficiently. In addition, the survey indicates
that most Virginia campgrounds get only seasonal use (as would marinas in Virginia), allowing their systems to recover between

This paper extends previous research assessing the effects of environmental pollution on property values, and the specific issue of information disclosure requirements on future real estate transactions. Given that various information disclosure requirements were imposed in most US states during the 1990s, it is important to begin to understand their anticipated effects. Using a case of soil contamination in Corpus Christi, TX, USA, this paper applies the contingent valuation method using telephone survey data to investigate the effect of a split-sample information disclosure treatment concerning soil contamination on the willingness to pay of potential home buyers.
