Most environmental professionals and decision-makers, and certainly the public at large, hold the view that the integrity of earth’s natural environment will be conserved for posterity and sustainable development achieved if all the nations rigorously enforced their environmental and emission standards. It is argued in this paper that this view, sincerely held by many as an “axiomatic truth,” is mistaken and misplaced. This is because as a biogeochemical entity the Earth has limited self-regenerative capacity (SRC) to cope with anthropogenic pollution, and all kinds of environmental problems ensue when that limit is exceeded. Indeed, mounting environmental problems now occurring on all fronts amply testify to the fact that the limit has already been exceeded. They also provide necessary and sufficient proof that environmental and emission standards have been woefully inadequate for protecting earth’s natural environment and life-support systems. It is argued that true global environmental sustainability will be achieved, paving the way to true global sustainable development, if and only if global environmental and emission standards are set so that global anthropogenic pollution does not exceed the limit of earth’s natural SRC to cope with such pollution. These and related issues are discussed in this paper. A simple mathematical model using basic mathematics is also presented to explain how the phenomenon of “positive feedback” works in some of the environmental problems to exacerbate environmental degradation and progressively to erode nature’s SRC.

A generic In Situ Mixing Height Growth (IMG) model, capable of predicting the real-time growth of the mixed layer and its diurnal evolution from routinely observed simple surface meteorological is developed. The algorithm for the determination of temporally growing daytime mixing height includes both convective and mechanical turbulence contributions. It accounts for neutral as well as height varying potential temperature gradients above the mixed layer. For thermally stable and mechanically dominated unstable night time Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) the module uses similarity formulae based on the wind velocity [1]), the Monin—Obukhov length [2], and the Coriolis parameter. In the convective case simple slab model is integrated, based on initial lapse rate and the surface heat flux. The lapse rate is evaluated on the basis of vertical atmospheric stability, surface type and surface temperature. This differentiates the IMG model from other existing mixing height models that need initial measured lapse rate for calculation. IMG model is site specific as it calculates the radiative incoming heat flux depending on the solar declination estimates based on-site latitude and longitude. The IMG model is applied to calculate mixing height for India by using surface data (viz. wind speed, surface temperature, surface type) from 152 surface meteorological stations. Results have been evaluated with radiosonde mixing height data procured from 18 upper air stations. Sensitivity analysis of the model with respect to various parameters is performed. The model is formulated after reviewing presently available radiosonde mixing height data in India and can satisfactorily provide an alternative means of estimating mixing height for air pollution dispersion models.  相似文献

The relative sensitivity of tannery effluent before and after treatment was compared by employing Nostoc muscorum and microtox assay in laboratory. The effect on chlorophyll, protein and biomass content of Nostoc muscorum was studied with the luminescent property inhibition of Photobacterium phosphorium and compared with algal bioassay. The results of microtox assay after 5, 15 and 30 min of exposure were compared with data obtained from algal bioassay. It was observed that the luminescent property of Photobacterium phosphorium in microtox assay as well as the chlorophyll content of Nostoc muscorum in algal assay were the most sensitive parameters in toxicity evaluation of tannery effluent. The microtox assay produced notably comparable EC50 values with that of algal bioassay. The microtox assay of toxicity showed that EC50 (%) in 30 min was 3.19 and 63.49 for untreated and treated tannery effluent, respectively while in algal bioassay the EC50 for chlorophyll was in between 0-2.5% and 100%, respectively, in untreated and treated effluent. More than 60% reduction of toxicity was noted in treated tannery effluent in both test system.  相似文献

Accumulation of Cu and Cd by Vallisneria spiralis was studied under laboratory conditions. Plants showed ability to reduce 5 µg ml–1 Cu background concentration to below 0.05 µg ml–1 (m.p.l., WHO 1985) within 48 h. The Cd concentration of 1.0 µg ml–1 was reduced to below m.p.l. (0.005 µg ml–1) in 168 h. Cysteine synthesis was more under Cd stress condition. Biomonitoring of toxic metals in the water resources used by indigenous tribal communities in Koraput district, Orissa, India was carried out under the National Technology Mission Project. Most of the water bodies catering for the day-to-day needs of the local inhabitants were found to contain high concentrations of Fe and Mn in addition to Cr, Cd, Pb and Cu. The water bodies supported by a great number of phytodiversity and the plants growing therein accumulated significantly high amounts of these toxic metals, submerged plants being more efficient than floating ones. The species like Chara corallina and Spirogyra spp. showed significant potential to magnify Cd and Pb in their tissue several times more than the concentrations in surrounding water. Dissipation behaviour of ready mix polytrin C 44EC (profenophos 40% + cypermethrin 4%) and spark 36EC (triazophos 35%+.deltamethrin 1%) applied at 1 L/ha in okra crop during Kharif in year 2000 was studied at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after treatment. Dissipation on 7th day was found to be maximum (98.4%) for profenophos followed by triazophos (86.2%), cypermethrin (73.5%) and deltamethrin (55.7%). Half life (t1/2) values for the above insecticides were 1.35, 2.55, 4.11 and 7.60 days, respectively. All the insecticides followed a first order kinetics. Profenophos and triazophos followed a biphasic dissipation pattern with faster dissipation in phase I (0–1 days) and manifesting slower rate of dissipation in phase II (1–7 days).  相似文献

A total of 20 soil samples were collected from mining and non-mining areas of coal field regions of Dhanbad, India. These samples were grown on different types of selective media and a total of 141 isolates, each having plant growth-promoting (PGP) characteristics were obtained. The isolates were further tested for PGP traits (phosphate solubilisation, production of indole acetic acid, hydrogen cyanide, ammonia and siderophores) and a biochemical analysis was done to determine the prevalent species of the region. All the strains selected showed at least two PGP characteristics, which indicated that they can be used as plant growth promoters. Bacillus and Pseudomonas species were prevalent in both mining and non-mining areas, whereas Rhizobium, Azospirillum and Azotobacter were found mostly in the non-mining area. A total of 48 Bacillus, 29 Pseudomonas, 4 Rhizobium, 11 Azospirillum and 10 Azotobacter species were obtained from the two selected regions. The soil samples from the mining region were poor in nutrient content and thus relatively lower numbers of PGP isolates were attained.  相似文献

Arachis hypogaea hulls, an agricultural waste, were used to prepare activated carbon by chemical activation with zinc chloride under four different activation atmospheres. The most important parameter in chemical activation was found to be the chemical ratio (activating agent/precursor). Carbonization temperature and time are the other two important variables, which had significant effect on the pore structure of carbon. The maximum Brunquer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and micropore volume of the activated carbon was found to be 418 m2/g and 0.28 cm3/g, respectively. The activated carbon developed shows substantial capability to adsorb phenol from aqueous solutions. The kinetic data were fitted to the models of intraparticle diffusion, pseudo-second-order, and Lagergren, and followed more closely the pseudo-second-order chemisorption model. The isotherm equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Solution pH has significant effect on adsorption and the maximum uptake of phenol was reported at pH 3.5.  相似文献
