Levels of PCDD/FS in ambient air and soil in the vicinity of a municipal solid waste incinerator in Hsinchu 总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were determined in twenty-one ambient air samples, eight soil samples and two stack gas samples, collected near or in a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) in Hsinchu, Taiwan. A systematic decrease of PCDD/Fs in the ambient air from the northeastern area was observed. PCDD/Fs levels measured in the ambient air range from 0.058 to 0.127 pg-TEQ/m3. Higher PCDD/Fs levels in the ambient air were found during winter. In addition, PCDD/Fs levels measured in the soil range from 0.524 to 5.02 pg-TEQ/g d.m. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) did not provide sufficient evidence that the environmental PCDD/Fs contamination was caused by emissions from the Hsinchu MSWI. Simulation modeling for nitrogen removal and experimental estimation of mass fractions of microbial groups in single-sludge system 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Nitrification-denitrification in a single-sludge nitrogen removal system (SSNRS; with a sufficient carbon source for denitrification) was performed. With an increase in the mixed liquor recycle ratio (R(m)) from 1 to 2, the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency at a lower volumetric loading rate (VLR=0.21 NH(4)(+)-N m(-3) d(-1)) increased, but the TN removal efficiency at a higher VLR (0.35 kg NH(4)(+)-N m(-3) d(-1)) decreased. A kinetic model that accounts for the mass fractions of Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, nitrate reducer and nitrite reducer (f(n1), f(n2), f(dn1), and f(dn2)) in the SSNRS and an experimental approach for the estimation of the mass fractions of nitrogen-related microbial groups are also proposed. The estimated f(dn1) plus f(dn2) (0.65-0.83) was significantly larger than the f(n1) plus f(n2) (0.28-0.32); the f(n1) (0.21-0.26) was larger than the f(n2) (0.05-0.07); and the f(dn1) (0.32-0.45) varied slightly with the f(dn2) (0.33-0.38). At the lower VLR, the f(dn1) plus f(dn2) increased with increasing R(m); however at the higher VLR, the f(dn1) plus f(dn2) did not increase with increasing R(m). By using the kinetic model, the calculated residual NH(4)(+)-N and NO(2)(-)-N in the anoxic reactor and NO(2)(-)-N and NO(3)(-)-N in the aerobic reactor were in fairly good agreement with the experimental data; the calculated NO(3)(-)-N in the anoxic reactor was over-estimated and the calculated NH(4)(+)-N in the aerobic reactor was under-estimated. 相似文献

Comparative granule characteristics and biokinetics of sucrose-fed and phenol-fed UASB reactors 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors were fed with a non-inhibitory substrate sucrose and an inhibitory substrate phenol, respectively, to compare granule characteristics and biokinetics. The average size of biomass granules in the sucrose-fed UASB reactor was slightly larger than that of the phenol-fed reactor. The average microbial density was significantly higher in the phenol-fed reactor. The intrinsic biokinetics of sucrose-acidogenesis and phenol-acidogenesis followed Monod and Haldane kinetics, respectively. By comparing half-saturation constants for sucrose and phenol (Ks1,s; Ks1,p), the affinity of phenol to the granule should be much higher. The mass fraction of methanogens (f) in the sucrose-fed reactor decreased with increasing volumetric loading rate (VLR) because of the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs); the f of the phenol-fed reactor decreased with increasing VLR because acidogenesis was the rate-limiting step. The mass transfer resistance in overall substrate removal in the sucrose-fed reactor was greater than that in the phenol-fed reactor. 相似文献

In this study, a survey for the spatial distribution of heavy metals in Chaohu Lake of China was conducted. Sixty-two surface
water samples were collected from entire lake including three of its main river entrances. This is the first systematic report
concerning the content, distribution, and origin of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Hg, Zn, and Ni) in the Chaohu Lake water. The
results showed that heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Zn, and Ni) concentrations in the estuary of Nanfei River were relatively higher
than those in the other areas, while content of Hg is higher in the southeast lake than northwest lake. Moreover, Cd has locally
concentration in the surface water from the entire Chaohu Lake. The heavy metal average concentrations, except Hg, were lower
than the cutoff values for the first-grade water quality (China Environment Quality Standard) which was set as the highest
standard to protect the social nature reserves. The Hg content is between the grades three and four water quality, and other
heavy metals contents are higher than background values. The aquatic environment of Chaohu Lake has apparently been contaminated.
Both the cluster analysis (CA) and correlation analysis provide information about the origin of heavy metals in the Lake.
Our findings indicated that agricultural activities and adjacent plants chimneys may contribute the most to Cd and Hg contamination

Daily and hourly average data from nine air-quality monitoring stations distributed across central Taiwan, which include ten items (i.e., PM10, PM2.5, wind direction, wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, SO2, NO2, NO, and CO), were collected from 2005 to 2009. Four episode types: long-range transport with dust storms (DS), long-range transport with frontal pollution (FP), river dust (RD), and stagnant weather (SW), and one mixed type of episode were identified. Of these four episode types, the SW was the dominant type, averaging about 70 %. The mean ratio of PM2.5/PM10 was the lowest during the RD episodes (0.42), while the mean ratio of PM2.5/PM10 was the highest during the SW episodes (0.64). Fine aerosol (PM2.5) and coarse aerosol (PM10–2.5) samples were collected by high-volume samplers for chemical composition analysis, from only three stations (Douliou, Lunbei, and Siansi) during the days of SW, RD, DS, and FP. The concentrations of PM2.5 and three ionic species (NH4 +, NO3 ?, and SO4 2?) all showed significant differences among the four episode types. The highest levels of NO3 ? (12.1 μg/m3) and SO4 2? (20.5 μg/m3) were found during the SW and FP episodes, respectively. A comparison on the spatial similarity of aerosol compositions among the episodes and/or non-episodes (control) was characterized by the coefficient of divergence (CD). The results showed higher CD values in PM10–2.5 than in PM2.5, and the CD values between RD episodes and the other three episodes were higher than those between two types of episode for the other three episodes. The ratios of SOR (sulfur oxidation ratio), SO4 2?/EC (elemental carbon), NOR (nitrogen oxidation ratio), and NO3 ?/EC showed that sulfate formation was most rapid during the FP, while nitrate formation was most rapid during the SW. 相似文献

Environmental site assessments are frequently executed for monitoring and remediation performance evaluation purposes, especially in total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH)-contaminated areas, such as gas stations. As a key issue, reproducibility of the assessment results must be ensured, especially if attempts are made to compare results between different institutions. Although it is widely known that uncertainties associated with soil sampling are much higher than those with chemical analyses, field guides or protocols to deal with these uncertainties are not stipulated in detail in the relevant regulations, causing serious errors and distortion of the reliability of environmental site assessments. In this research, uncertainties associated with soil sampling and sample reduction for chemical analysis were quantified using laboratory-scale experiments and the theory of sampling. The research results showed that the TPH mass assessed by sampling tends to be overestimated and sampling errors are high, especially for the low range of TPH concentrations. Homogenization of soil was found to be an efficient method to suppress uncertainty, but high-resolution sampling could be an essential way to minimize this. 相似文献

An observation-based method (OBM) is developed to evaluate the ozone (O3) production efficiency (O3 molecules produced per NOx molecule consumed) and O3 production rate (P(O3)) during a field campaign in southern Taiwan. The method can also provide an estimate of the concentration of OH. A key step in the method is to use observed concentrations of two aromatic hydrocarbons, namely ethylbenzene and m,p-xylene, to estimate the degree of photochemical processing and amounts of photochemically consumed NOx and NMHCs by OH. In addition, total oxidant (O3+NO2) instead of O3 itself turns out to be very useful for representing ozone production in the OBM approach. The average O3 production efficiency during the field campaign in Fall (2003) is found to be about 10.2±3.9. The relationship of P(O3) with NOx is examined and compared with a one-dimensional (1D) photochemical model. Values of P(O3) derived from the OBM are slightly lower than those calculated in the 1D model. However, OH concentrations estimated by the OBM are about a factor of 2 lower than the 1D model. Fresh emissions, which affect the degree of photochemical processing appear to be a major cause of the underestimate. We have developed a three-dimensional (3D) OBM O3 production diagram that resembles the EKMA ozone isopleth diagram to study the relationship of the total oxidant versus O3 precursors. The 3D OBM O3 production diagram suggests that reducing emissions of NMHCs are more effective in controlling O3 than reducing NOx. However, significant uncertainties remain in the OBM, and considerable more work is required to minimize these uncertainties before a definitive control strategy can be reached. The observation-based approach provides a good alternative to measuring peroxy radicals for evaluating the production of O3 and formulating O3 control strategy in urban and suburban environments. 相似文献

Concentrations of 17 dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) were measured in total diet study samples of 14 food groups of animal origin from 11 locations in Taiwan, collected in 2003. Pork meat possessed the lowest background concentration level of 0.058 pg WHO-TEQ(PCDD/Fs+dl-PCBs)/g fresh weight. The dl-PCBs contribution were 31%, 59%, 36%, 46%, and 13% for meat and meat products, muscle meat of fish, milk and dairy products, fat and oil, and egg, respectively. The estimated monthly intake (EMI) was 44.7 and 39.5 pg WHO-TEQ(PCDD/Fs+dl-PCBs)/kg b.w./month for a male and female adult weighing 64.8 kg and 56.3 kg, respectively. Muscle meat of fish contributes 46% to the mean EMI. Factors affecting the EMI, in order of increasing importance are analytical method uncertainty, sample compositional difference, and food consumption data. In addition to the continuous efforts to identify and reduce the source of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs releases into the environment and the food-chain, the practice of a healthy dietary habit, i.e., eating foods of lower TEQ levels, was suggested to effectively reduce human exposure to PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. 相似文献

In autumn of 2008, the chemical characteristics of major secondary ionic aerosols at a suburban site in central Taiwan were measured during an annually occurring season of high pollution. The semicontinuous measurement system measured major soluble inorganic species, including NH(4)(+), NO(3)(-), and SO(4)(2-), in PM(10) with a 15 min resolution time. The atmospheric conditions, except for the influences of typhoons, were dominated by the local sea-land breeze with clear diurnal variations of meteorological parameters and air pollutant concentrations. To evaluate secondary aerosol formation at different ozone levels, daily ozone maximum concentration (O(3,daily max)) was used as an index of photochemical activity for dividing between the heavily polluted period (O(3,daily max) ≧80 ppb) and the lightly polluted period (O(3,daily max)<80 ppb). The concentrations of PM(10), NO(3)(-), SO(4)(2-), NH(4)(+) and total major ions during the heavily polluted period were 1.6, 1.9, 2.4, 2.7 and 2.3 times the concentrations during the lightly polluted period, respectively. Results showed that the daily maximum concentrations of PM(10) occurred around midnight and the daily maximum ozone concentration occurred during daytime. The average concentration of SO(2) was higher during daytime, which could be explained by the transportation of coastal industry emissions to the sampling site. In contrast, the high concentration of NO(2) at night was due to the land breeze flow that transport inland urban air masses toward this site. The simulations of breeze circulations and transitions were reflected in transports and distributions of these pollutants. During heavily polluted periods, NO(3)(-) and NH(4)(+) showed a clear diurnal variations with lower concentrations after midday, possibly due to the thermal volatilization of NH(4)NO(3) during daytime and transport of inland urban plume at night. The diurnal variation of PM(10) showed the similar pattern to that of NO(3)(-) and NH(4)(+) aerosols. This indicated that the formatted secondary aerosols in the inland urban area could be transported to the coastal area by the weak land breeze and deteriorated the air quality in the coastal area at night. 相似文献

Statistical procedures for wildlife population estimation have been greatly improved since the last decade. For estimation of stray dog population size, however, the simple methods recommended by the 1990 WHO/WSPA guidelines seem to remain the popular favorites among researchers. Although the methods are very easy to use, their usefulness relies heavily on certain assumptions that are generally unrealistic. Using simulation studies, we conclude that Beck’s method, one of the estimators recommended by the guidelines, performs fairly well and can be safely used to get a quick population estimate, as long as the underlying assumptions are not severely violated. 相似文献
