Under conditions of natural irradiance, the development and decline of a flagellate-dominated phytoplankton population was followed in a coastal North Atlantic pond over a 3 d period in summer 1986. Irradiance negatively affected phytoplankton biomass estimated as chlorophyll a, which decreased during the day at photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) levels above 600 to 1000 mol m-2s-1; chlorophyll a increased at PAR values below this threshold. In addition, an inverse relationship was found between changes in chlorophyll a and changes in dissolved inorganic nitrogen, indicating synthesis of nitrogenous biomass mainly at night and degradation mainly during the day, with intense exchanges of material between the particulate and dissolved nitrogen fractions. The natural abundance of 13C in particulate matter increased initially, and then remained constant, and was controlled mainly by the ratio -carboxylases activity: ribulose biphosphate carboxylase activity. The hypothesis that the latter enzyme is broken down under high irradiance and is partly responsible for increases in external dissolved nitrogen was rejected. 相似文献

Recently developed theoretical models of stage-structured consumer-resource systems have shown that stage-specific biomass overcompensation can arise in response to increased mortality rates. We parameterized a stage-structured population model to simulate the effects of increased adult mortality caused by a pathogen outbreak in the perch (Perca fluviatilis) population of Windermere (UK) in 1976. The model predicts biomass overcompensation by juveniles in response to increased adult mortality due to a shift in food-dependent growth and reproduction rates. Considering cannibalism between life stages in the model reinforces this compensatory response due to the release from predation on juveniles at high mortality rates. These model predictions are matched by our analysis of a 60-year time series of scientific monitoring of Windermere perch, which shows that the pathogen outbreak induced a strong decrease in adult biomass and a corresponding increase in juvenile biomass. Age-specific adult fecundity and size at age were higher after than before the disease outbreak, suggesting that the pathogen-induced mortality released adult perch from competition, thereby increasing somatic and reproductive growth. Higher juvenile survival after the pathogen outbreak due to a release from cannibalism likely contributed to the observed biomass overcompensation. Population growth, and hence the population's persistence, is affected by several factors such as climate, species interaction, and harvesting pressure. Proper resource management requires an understanding of these factors. We apply techniques based upon age-structured population matrices to analyze estimated stock sizes derived from annual bottom trawl sampling in the winter feeding area of northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua L.) from 1981 to 2003. We run generalized additive models to explain population growth rate by different explanatory variables. Cod population growth was found to be positively related to the abundance of capelin (Mallotus villosus Miller), negatively related to the number of cannibalistic cod with a two-year lag, and marginally positively related to the winter North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAO). This model remains true independently from the population status (i.e., fished or non-fished). Capelin abundance is the main variable that to some degree can be adjusted in order to maintain the population size at a given level of cod harvesting. Our results point to the importance of managing conjointly cod and capelin stocks. 相似文献
