The importance of the short-term leaching dynamics of wood preservatives

The potential environmental impacts from the use of treated timber in aquatic areas is under scrutiny as a result of environmental legislation and reports of the deleterious environmental effects around treated structures. In this study leaching experiments of up to 3 weeks duration were conducted on two species of chromated copper arsenate treated timber, dried for different periods of time. Increased drying time significantly reduced leaching of Cr and As. The addition of a synthetic humic acid increased leaching of Cu and As, but reduced leaching of Cr. Putative risk assessments conducted using short-term copper leaching data suggested protocol design may influence decisions made regarding the environmental acceptability of such preservatives.     

Watershed associations in West Virginia: their impact on environmental protection

Grassroots watershed associations have formed as an avenue to facilitate public involvement in protecting watersheds. Growth in the number of watershed associations has created a need to evaluate whether their existence enhances environmental protection by local communities. In this research, environmental protection was measured by the number of watershed protection activities conducted and amount of funding directed towards protecting surface waters by non-profit, volunteer organizations. Regression models were utilized to examine the influence of population demographic and watershed characteristics variables to explain the formation of watershed associations along with watershed protection activities and funding. Regression results showed that the presence of watershed associations had positive impacts on both the number of activities and financial resources acquired. The results confirm that watershed associations enhance the ability of communities to obtain funding and to implement watershed protection actions. Thus, watershed associations serve as an effective institution for promoting environmental protection.     

Fishery Enhancement Reef Building Exercise

The constructive use of coal-fired power station waste products for building artificial reefs is being explored for the first time in the U.K. at present, the practice of sea dumping of raw pulverised fuel ash (PFA) from coal combustion is under review and the use of consolidated PFA blocks offers a possible alternative. the planned fitting of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) plant in the U.K. will additionally produce large quantities of gypsum. to test the environmental compatability of such materials in marine structures, an experimental reef has been constructed off the central south coast of the U.K. Fifty tonnes of blocks made from different combinations of PFA, gypsum, FGD waste water sludge, cement and gravel using standard concrete as the control material, were deployed. the site selected is remote from prominent sea bed features in an area of flat sand with limited species variety.The preliminary studies leading to the licensing of this project included bioassay experiments with diatom cultures, field trials with test tiles and trace metal bioaccumulation studies the stages of consultation and licensing of the project are outlined.

Colonisation of the reef has been rapid, initially by shoaling fish, particularly by bib (Trisopterus luscus) then, within the first month, by representatives of the commercial crab and lobster species typical of the local natural rocky coast. After three months the epifauna and flora were well established. at this stage some 80 species of flora and fauna have been identified in association with the reef with no differentiation in colonisation apparent between the PFA/gypsum mixtures and the concrete control. the number of species far exceeds that of PFA powder dumping grounds. Analyses for heavy metal ions in the reef blocks after 2 months immersion have not shown any significant difference from the original composition.     

Household participation in waste recycling: Some national survey evidence from Scotland

Increasing levels of household waste have raced up national, regional and municipal environmental policy agendas around the world, especially as heavy reliance on landfill and incineration is becoming prohibitively expensive and also a high profile source of local voter dissent or vociferous NIMBY behaviour. In an attempt to reduce reliance on these options, UK local authorities have increasingly been forced to turn to recycling. This paper reports on a broad empirical study of household recycling, utilizing national survey-based evidence (drawn from over 31 000 interviews in Scotland). Hitherto, very few published empirical studies have addressed the household recycling decision using national survey data to furnish baseline evidence. For this purpose logit analysis is undertaken, using data extracted from the Scottish Household Surveys of 2000 and 2001. This work also serves as the basis for further detailed modelling of a selection of illustrative household types. After consideration of particular waste streams and the availability of different recycling schemes, the effects on the probability of recycling participation of age, income level, household composition, car ownership and local authority were analysed. While there are clear income effects, the picture regarding the impact of household composition and some other factors is more complex.
