In the present study, the magnitude of contamination of vegetables with heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn) was determined in a long-term wastewater-irrigated agricultural land. Heavy metal concentrations in vegetables were several folds higher in wastewater-irrigated site compared to clean water-irrigated area. The wastewater-irrigated crops analysed in this study are heavily contaminated with heavy metals. Concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr in all the sewage-fed vegetables were beyond the safe limit of FAO/WHO and Indian standard. Contamination is at its highest level in radish and spinach. Daily intake values of Pb, Cd and Ni through consumption of sewage-fed vegetables exceeded the recommended oral dose of metal for both adult and children. The study concludes that wastewater irrigation led to accumulation of heavy metals in vegetables causing potential health risk to consumers. 相似文献

The Mid-Canada Radar Line (MCRL) was built by the Canadian government during the 1950s and closed in the 1960s. MCRL Site 050 located in close proximity to Fort Albany First Nation was a source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); thus, this site was remediated in 2001. There has been concern in Fort Albany that the Albany River by MCRL Site 050 is still contaminated. We examined whether the aquatic environment surrounding MCRL Site 050 has returned to background levels four years post-remediation using leeches (Haemopis spp.) as bioindicators. Leech data for 2005 indicates that PCB levels remain higher near Site 050 than at the control site upstream; however, there has been a decrease in difference between Site 050 and the control site for leech body burden between years. Thus, the removal of the terrestrial source of PCB contamination at Site 050 appears to have removed the main source of aquatic PCBs. 相似文献

Purpose
Biodesulfurization (BDS) has the potential to desulfurize dibenzothiophene (DBT) and its alkylated derivatives, the compounds that are otherwise refractory to hydrodesulfurization (HDS). Thermophilic microorganisms are more appropriate to be used for BDS applications following HDS. The aim of the present study was to isolate a thermophilic microorganism and to explore its commercial relevance for BDS process.Methods
The desulfurizing thermophilic strain was isolated and enriched from various soil and water samples using sulfur free medium (SFM) supplemented with DBT. Microbiological and genomic approach was used to characterize the strain. Desulfurization reactions were carried out using DBT and petroleum oils at 45°C followed by different analytical procedures.Results
We report the isolation of a thermophilic bacterium Klebsiella sp. 13T from contaminated soils collected from petroleum refinery. HPLC analysis revealed that Klebsiella sp. 13T could desulfurize DBT to 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBP) at 45°C through 4S pathway. In addition, adapted cells of Klebsiella sp. 13T were found to remove 22?C53% of sulfur from different petroleum oils with highest sulfur removal from light crude oil.Conclusion
Klebsiella sp. 13T is a potential candidate for BDS because of its thermophilic nature and capability to desulfurize petroleum oils. 相似文献134.

Growth and metal accumulation were investigated in two Cicer arietinum L. varieties (var. CSG-8962 and var. C-235) when grown in various combinations of fly ash (FA) amended with garden soil (GS),
press mud (PM) or saw dust (SD). In addition, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, nitrate reductase (NR) activity, cysteine,
non-protein thiols (NP-SH), and ascorbic acid were studied. FA amended with GS or PM led to a 5–10 times increase in biomass
compared to FA control and was most pronounced in the less metal tolerant variety CSG-8962. Amendment of FA with either GS
or PM only moderately increased the contents of some essential metals whereas the non-essential Cd and Cr remained similar
or decreased slightly compared to FA control. FA combined with either GS or PM increased the amount of photosynthetic pigments
and was largely absent when SD was added to FA. Improved nitrogen availability led to increased nitrate reductase (NR) activity
with all amendments but less so with SD. Metal stress indicating parameters were generally reduced (cysteine and non-protein
thiols) or unchanged (ascorbic acid). In conclusion, of the tested ameliorants both GS and PM greatly improved growth of C. arietinum making FA a suitable component of plant growth substrates. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to obtain information on the immobilization of beryllium (Be) in solid waste generated in the extraction process of beryllium from its ore, Beryl. This solid waste, termed red-mud, contains oxides of iron, aluminium, calcium, magnesium and beryllium. The red-mud waste contains beryllium at levels above the permissible limit, which prevents its disposal as solid waste. The total beryllium content in the red-mud analysed showed value ranging from 0.39 to 0.59% Be The studies showed that 50% of the total beryllium in red-mud can be extracted by water by repeated leaching over a period of 45 days. The cement mix, casting into cement blocks, was subjected to leachability studies over a period of 105 days and immobilization factor (IF factor) was determined. These IF values, of the order of 102, were compared with those obtained by performing leachability study on vitrified red-mud masses produced at different temperature conditions. Direct heating of the red-mud gave the gray coloured, non-transparent vitreous mass (as 'bad glass') showed effective immobilisation factor for beryllium in red-mud of the order of 10(4). 相似文献

Methods currently approved for the measurement of radon ((222)Rn) in water in New York State are liquid scintillation counting and emanation into alpha-scintillation cells. A passive system using an electret ion chamber (EIC) was evaluated as an alternative for the measurement of radon in water. Over 130 water samples from a community water supply containing 32BqL(-1) and 30 standards containing 686BqL(-1) were measured using the EIC method over 1- to 4-day exposure times. For comparison, identical samples were measured using liquid scintillation counting. Results of duplicate samples were typically within 5% for liquid scintillation counting and within 10% for the EIC. With respect to accuracy, the EIC produced results that were consistently low by 11-15%. 相似文献

A study was performed to investigate the effects of complete and skeleton photoperiods on gonadal stimulation in baya weaver, Ploceus philippinus. In August 2003, five groups of acclimatized birds (n = 7 each) were exposed to 6L: 13D: 1L: 4D, 6L: 6D: 1L: 11D, 11L: 13D and 13L: 11D. Birds were refractory and their exposure to 6L:13D:1L:4D, 6L:6D:1L:11D, 11L:13D and 13L:11D did not evoke any response. This clearly indicates that the birds were insensitive to the stimulatory effects of these photoperiods and perceived them as short days. An attempt was made to test the responsivity by subjecting all these groups to long day exposure after 16 weeks of experiment. Under 16L: 8D, birds did not show a response during the first 4 weeks of exposure (week 16 to week 20), but thereafter there was a significant photoinduction except 11L:13D (week 24), but the rate and magnitude was different. Until the end of the experiment (32 weeks), all groups of birds had maximum testicular volume except 11L:13D. Birds pre-exposed to 6L:13D:1L:4D, 6L:6D:1L:11D, 11L:13D and 13L:11D responded to 16L:8D, which suggests that these photoperiods helped the birds in recovering their photosensitivity. The results from this experiment indicate that baya weaver interprets a light period depending when the light falls relative to its endogenous circadian system. 相似文献

Effect of various additions of cadmium (5 to 3125 microg g(-1) air dried soil) was studied on growth and Cd uptake in barley grown in pots containing two soil types- a loamy sand and a sandy loam, during different stages of growth. While lower doses (5 to 25 microg g(-1)) led to an increase, the higher doses resulted in a substantial decrease in barley growth. The plant Cd content increased with an increase in soil applied Cd.
