At many "real world" field sites, the number of available monitoring wells is limited due to economic or geological reasons. Under such restricted conditions, it is difficult to perform a reliable field investigation and to quantify primary lines of evidence for natural attenuation (NA), like the documentation of a decrease of contaminant mass flux in flow direction. This study reports the results of a groundwater investigation at a former manufactured gas plant situated in a Quaternary river valley in southwest Germany. The location, infrastructure and aquifer setting are typical of many industrial sites in Germany. Due to difficult drilling conditions (coarse glaciofluvial gravel deposits and an anthropogenic fill above the aquifer), only 12 monitoring wells were available for the investigation and localisation of the contaminant plume. These wells were situated along three control planes (CP) downgradient from the contaminant source, with four wells along each plane. Based on the sparse set of monitoring wells, field scale mass fluxes and first-order natural attenuation rate constants of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene and p-xylene (BTEX) and low molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were estimated utilizing different point scale and also a new integral investigation method. The results show that even at a heterogeneous site with a sparse monitoring network point scale investigation methods can provide reliable information on field scale natural attenuation rates, if a dependable flow model or tracer test data is available. If this information is not available, only the new integral investigation method presented can yield adequate results for the quantification of contaminant mass fluxes under sparse monitoring conditions. 相似文献

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is highlighted to treat volatile organic compound (VOC) emission. Then, this work analysed the influence of palladium (Pd) content loaded in TiO2 on n-octane and iso-octane photodegradation. For this, TiO2 was loaded with Pd in different contents: 0.4%, 0.7%, and 1.0%. The samples were characterized, and the photodegradation experiments were conducted by Pd/TiO2/UV process. The characterization analyses showed that the metal presence did not change the catalyst structure or its surface area; however, it reduced the bandgap energy. The photocatalytic results proved that palladium improved n-octane degradation from 62% (pure TiO2) to 92.6% (0.4%Pd/TiO2) and, iso-octane degradation enhanced from 59% (pure TiO2) to 90.6% (0.7%Pd/TiO2); all results were obtained in the space time of 39 s. Therefore, 0.4%Pd/TiO2 and 0.7%Pd/TiO2 showed better oxidation results to degradation n-octane and iso-octane, respectively. The kinetic model of pseudo-first order showed a good fit for the data of both VOCs. Heterogeneous photocatalysis with Pd/TiO2 showed to be an adequate technique to reduce VOCs emission.

Agricultural change has transformed large areas of traditional farming landscapes, leading to important changes in the species
community assemblages in most European countries. We suspect that the drastic changes in land-use that have occurred in Andalusia
(southern Spain) over recent decades, may have affected the distribution and abundance of game species in this region. This
article compares the distribution of the main game species in Andalusia during the 1960s and 1990s, using data from maps available
from the Mainland Spanish Fish, Game and National Parks Service and from recent datasets on hunting yield distributions, respectively.
Big-game and small-game species were significantly segregated in southern Spain during the 1990s, as two clearly independent
chorotypes (groups of species whose abundances are similarly distributed) were obtained from the classification analysis.
In contrast, big-game and small-game species were not significantly segregated several decades ago, when there was only one
chorotype consisting of small-game species and wild boar. The other three ungulates did not constitute a significant chorotype,
as they showed positive correlations with some species in the group mentioned above. These changes seem to be a consequence
of the transformations that have occurred in the Iberian Mediterranean landscape over the last few decades. The abandoning
of traditional activities, and the consequent formation of dense scrubland and woodland, has led to an expansion of big-game
species, and a decrease of small-game species in mountain areas. Moreover, agricultural intensification has apparently depleted
small-game species populations in some agricultural areas. On the other hand, the increasingly intensive hunting management
could be artificially boosting this segregation between small-game and big-game species. Our results suggest that the conservation
and regeneration of traditional agricultural landscapes (like those predominating in the 1960s) should be a priority for the
conservation of small-game species. 相似文献
