The Bateman gradient is increasingly used to measure sexual selection and characterize mating systems. In a landmark paper, Arnold and Duvall (Am Nat 143:317–348, 1994) formulated predictions about the relationships between sex-specific Bateman gradients and the major types of mating system. In promiscuous species, gradients are expected to be strong and similar in both sexes. Current support for this prediction however remains equivocal as reported male gradients are almost constantly steeper than female gradients. Here, we estimated Bateman gradients in a wild population of Eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) over two reproductive seasons characterized by extreme levels of promiscuity and unbiased operational sex ratios. We found significant and positive Bateman gradients for both sexes. The gradients were not different among sexes suggesting that the strength of sexual selection was similar for males and females. The opportunity for selection was also particularly strong for a promiscuous species and not different among sexes. Our results thus support the predicted Bateman gradients for a promiscuous mating system.  相似文献

Inbreeding has negative effects on individual and population performances. Therefore, enhancement of offspring genetic diversity is believed to play a major role in shaping mating systems. However, no study has clearly separated the direct effect of having multiple partners from the indirect effect of having more outbred offspring on the resulting reproductive success of individuals in the wild. In this study, we report significant associations between both multiple mating and within-individual genetic diversity of offspring, and an increased reproductive success of wild female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. Specifically, we found that females with a higher number of mates also have more outbred offspring (within-individuals), and that both of these characteristics increased their reproductive success expressed in terms of offspring surviving when combining all freshwater juvenile stages. Our findings also indicate that determinants of fitness are different among sexes as within-individual offspring genetic diversity was not a strong predictor of male reproductive success, while the number of mates was important. We also show that females mated with more outbred males than on average, which potentially increased their chances of producing outbred offspring. These results therefore suggest that there could be more important indirect genetic benefits of multiple mating for females than for males.Communicated by M. Abrahams  相似文献

Best management practices, such as conservation tillage, the optimum level of irrigation, fertilization, are frequently used to reduce non-point source pollution from agricultural land and improve water quality. In this study, we used the soil and water assessment tool to model the impacts of different irrigation (adjusted to crop need), cropping and fertilization practices on total nitrogen loss. The economic impacts of these practices on crop net farm income were also evaluated. For this purpose, the model was calibrated through comparing model outputs with observations to ensure reliable hydrologic, crop yield and nitrate leaching simulations. The results showed that by reducing water or fertilizer or combination of both, we can reduce nitrate leaching. For wheat and corn, the best scenario was S1n1 (combination between reduction by 10 % of water and nitrogen fertilizer application, simultaneously) and S2n3 (combination of 20 and 30 % reduction in water and fertilizer application), respectively. These scenarios are both ecologically and economically desirable. Also, decreasing nitrogen fertilization by 50 % for corn would decrease the nitrate pollution from 101.1 to 32.3 kg N ha?1; therefore, this strategy is ecologically desirable but economically unsound. So, there are opportunities for environmental decision makers to encourage farmers to implement these strategies. Also, since the nitrogen leaching cannot decrease without a reduction in net farm income for crops such as corn; hence, the losses of farmers should be compensated.  相似文献

In this research, we study on the distribution of several elements in bed sediments of Anzali wetland. Anzali, one of the most important international wetlands, is located on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea in Iran. This wetland receives discharges of domestic, agricultural, and industrial wastewater, which affect the distribution of elements. Our contribution in this study is threefold. First, we measured the total concentration of metals as well as their chemical partitioning and bioavailability in the sediments. Second, we calculated anthropogenic portions of metals in the sediment of this area. The results reveal anthropogenic portion of metals as Mo > Mn > Cd > As > Zn > Hg > Co > Sn > Cu > V > Ag > Ni > Pb > Fe > Cr > Al, respectively. We evaluated the intensity of pollution by using an enrichment factor, the geo-accumulation index and the pollution index. All these indices do not take into consideration the bioavailability of the elements. As our third and most important contribution, we introduced a new formula that takes into account the bioavailability of different elements. In comparison with aforementioned pollution indices, our newly introduced pollution index has a higher Pearson correlation with anthropogenic portion of metals. This high-correlation coefficient shows that our proposed pollution index is an effective indicator for determining the level of pollution, while other indices preserve their own merits.  相似文献

This work deals with parametric study of dry wire EDM (WEDM) process of cemented tungsten carbide. Experiments have been conducted using air as dielectric medium to investigate effects of pulse on time, pulse off time, gap set voltage, discharge current and wire tension on cutting velocity (CV) surface roughness (SR) and oversize (OS). Firstly, a series of exploratory experiments were carried out to identify appropriate gas and its pressure. Afterward, preliminary experiments were conducted to investigate effects of process parameters on dry WEDM characteristics and find appropriate ranges for each factor. Then a central composite rotatable method was employed to design experiments based on response surface methodology (RSM). Empirical models were developed to create relationships between process factors and responses by considering to analysis of variances (ANOVA). To increase the predictability of the process, intelligent models have been developed based on back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and accuracy of these models was compared with mathematical models based on root mean square error (RMSE) and prediction error percent (PEP). In order to select optimal solutions in the cases of single-objective and multi-objectives optimization problems, optimization includes two main approaches. First approach was based on mathematical model and desirability function. Also second approach was designed based on neural network and particle swarm optimization. These approaches were applied in both cases of single-objective and multi-objectives optimization problems and their results were compared with together. Results indicated that selection of air at inlet pressure of 1.5 bar is really appropriate for conducting experiments of next stages. Also, the BPNN creates more accurate prediction rather than mathematical model. Moreover, the BPNN-PSO approach was more efficient in optimization of process rather than mathematical model-desirability function in respect with validation tests.  相似文献
